261.1 | The Camel of Selhurst? No that's Geoff Thomas. | ARRODS::OHAGANB | a|r|s|e|n|a|l | Fri Sep 25 1992 15:05 | 22 |
| Erm, I think you'll find the term legend does'nt quite compliment
the name John Fashnau (sp?) but "the camel of Surinam" certainly
has a ring to it even if you mean lion. Incidentally was'nt that
Roger Milla's nickname?
How's this? He plays for premier League pariahs Wimbledon, is
brother to Justin Fashnau (Norwich, Notts Forest, Torquay etc)
who scored one of the best goals ever against Liverpool and who
took the brave step of announcing his homosexuality in a sport
which would deny it ever existed in it's ranks.
Both brothers were given up for adoption at an early age by their
(Nigerian?) mother and spent time in the care of Doctor Bernardos
childrens' homes which I understand John still gives time/money to.
John is nicknamed "Fash the Bash", presumably for his "in tunnel"
antics with the then Man Utd player Viv Anderson a few seasons ago.
He regularly nets 20 goals a season, will be or has been made into
a Wimbledon "president", makes a lot of money from outside financial/TV
interests and lives in the same luxury apartment block as Robert Smith
of The Cure. That's about it.

| Could be wrong, but wasn't he once sold by Lincoln City for $55,000?
This has long been rued by the Lincoln City fanzine, as the worst move they
ever made.
As a not particularly interesting aside, my faves Doncaster Rovers once sold
Brian Deane for $40,000. Nice one lads.
Any other bargain buys that you know of?

| There have been loads of them.
Two that stick in my mind.....
Ian Rush sold to Liverpool by Chester for a five figure sum.
Alan Devonshire bought by West Ham from Southall for 5,000 quid.
(although most non-WHU fans- and probably some WHU fans would doubt
this as being a 'bargain')

| Yes Lincoln City bought John Fashanu from Norwich, where he always
seemed to be in the shadow of brother Justin. I think this was
during Colin Murphy's first spell as Lincoln manager. I saw John
score once for Lincoln, against Bournemouth, before he was sold
to Millwall.
As an astonishly boring aside, Lincoln being a small club, have
provided several big names with the first step in their career. Usually
selling them for fees that seemed too small :
Glenn Cockerill (Southamton)
Trevor Peake (Coventry now Luton)
Mick Harford (now Chelsea)

| When I was a lad I palyed youth football in East Anglia. One blustery
Sunday morning we played against a team called Thetford Chase. I played
at centre half/sweeper and have never been so frightened as when these
two, tall, fit coloured boys threatened to punch my lights out after a
clumsey challenge on their right winger.
Justin & John, both went on to box at ABA level before adopting
football as their careers. I think I made the correct decision to
apologise, and back away!
John is the younger by a couple of years but they were both six foot at
14 years old.

| KNow that feeling - I played against them both in teh Anglian
combination league. Think they have the hardest elbows, shoulders and
bones in living memory - not to mention some of longest legs since
Cyndy Crawford.
Mind you we still beat 'em Good Old Lakeford Rangers
