Sorry to be picky about your subs but you don't really think Platt was
one of the best 15 players in Euro 92 do you ???
All he did was mishit a sitter that stumbled into the net. He
contributed nothing to the matches vs France and Denmark. IMO he was
one of the biggest disappointments for England in the championships.

It is only the subs bench.... 8-) Dom, really I thought that Roy looked
excellent in his first three outings. Fair comment that against Denmark
his performance, let's say 'left something to be desired'. Platt (and a
few others in the England team) was letdown by a SH*T team. I put Papin
in my choice of 11, and other than his beautiful goal against Sweden he
didn't exactly perform to the level that we all expected from him.

Platt??? 8 million quid for Platt. Before Euro 92 I would have said
that he was one of Englands best players ( a dubious achievement) -
but he did NOTHING. The president of Juve must be well p***ed off
after watching Platt in the company of players like Brolin, Bergkamf
& Laudrop (sp). I think this time next year we could see him returning
to the premier league with his tail between his legs.

Platt deserves the criticism he has received. He did not perform on
the big stage and the buck for his poor performance stops with him. He
has now got to prove himself all over again. He is certainly not worth
the money Juventus have splashed out.
But then again who in the past few seasons has been worth the money
that has been paid for them. (Aldo excepted of course)

Hold on a minute guys. The point is, there are types of players who's
game means they can still stand out, or shine, even if they're
surrounded by a shit team. Others (as I think is the case with Platt)
need to be part of a cohesive unit if they are to flourish. Don't lay
all the blame at his door. By such reasoning, the likes of Lineker,
Gullit, Van Basten, etc, are all a waste of space. It's rubbish.

Neil,
Platt was crap during the Euro C/ships as were the whole England
team. The only player I felt sorry for was Gary Linekar who was surrounded by
a gang of misfits who were never likely to get the ball into him. What Linekar
needed was quality players of the calibre of Townsend, Houghton & McGrath to
give him some ammo from midfield with players like Staunton sending in crosses
from the wing. He also lacked a partner of class. I'm sure that when you saw
the inadequacies of Smith, Shearer & Merson that you envied the fact that THE
GREAT ALDO declared for us. Also if Juventus and Marseilles pay big money for
players like Platt & Steven, the mind boggles at what a player of Ronnie
Whelan's calibre must be worth. These teams obviously have more money than
brains. I'm sure you would agree that Ireland deserved to be in Sweden ahead of
England. We have the better more determined players that take pride in putting
on the green jersey while the commitment of the English players is never
whole-hearted.
Neil, you may thank God that the '66 world cup was held in England and
that a blind Russian linesman was officiating or you would never have won a
tournament of significence.
By the way, THE GREAT ALDO is coming to Ballybrit, Galway at the weekend. I
will even get a signed picture for you.

Ton I don't really agree with any of the players on note .37. Iam not sure
about the keeper position, but the Ac Milan keeper is very good at the moment
as is their defence (No goals conceded in approx 700 mins) I rate Bratseth from
Norway as one of the best defenders along with Paul McGrath. Midfield to consist
of Baggio, Moeller Haessler and maybe one of midfield players from Denamrk or
Sweeden. Up front is very difficult, but take any of the following Riedle,
Chapisuat sp!!! Fleming Poulsen who returned last night after injury and was the
main inspiration behind Dortmunds comeback, Signori, Bergkampf, Papin and Iam
sure there's two or three others. I know the first three play for the same team
but all three are key players on their national teams. Iam not too sure about
English league players because I don't get much of a chance to see them but if
Gazza can't get his place on the Lazio team then he sure won't get on the
European team.

Ton,
I agree and disagree with your statement.
I agree that Ilgner isn't a world class goalie. I always considered
Andy Kpke (1.FC Nrnberg) much better.
I disagree that there aren't any good German goalies. The problem is
that there are more good goalies than there are places in the national
team. Ilgner and Kpke have an advantage there because of their national
team experience. Here are a few other good goalies.
Stefan Klos - Borussia Dortmund -showed his quality in the Euro Cups
Raimund Aumann - Bayern Munich -superb performance against Dortmund last
week. Severe injuries over the last few
years threw him back though. If he makes
a mistake, it's a stupid one.
Uli Stein - Eintracht Frankfurt -still a very good goalie with his 37 years
?? - Karlsruher SC -Just got an invitation to the national team
from Berti Vogts
Just my opinion,

Eddie none of the German keepers are class keepers with the exception of Uli

one of Germanys best midfielders Uwe Bein has called it a day with the national
team (wouldn't blame him) stating he was disapointed with the way he has been
treated by Vogts the national coach who usually plays with nine defenders one
keeper and one striker!!!! He's even turned Matthaeus into a defender, whose
next Riedle, Moeller?????

Not that he'd be a dead certainty, (who would be?) but...
...since when has Gascoigne not been a part of the Lazio team? He's
currently injured, but Dino Zoff has stated that he's the first name to
go on the teamsheet when he's fit. As for the fans, they interviewed
one on TV the other night and his comment was: "Gascoigne ** la
Lazio!". (No translation necessary.)
I don't think there's anyone here who sees enough football from each
country to be able to choose a Euro team with any degree of confidence.
However:
CONSPICUOUS BY THEIR ABSENCE SO FAR: Maldini, Platt, Ince, Cantona,
Giggs, Stoitchkov, Savicevic, Boban
CONSPICUOUS BY THEIR PRESENCE SO FAR: Signori, Overmars, De Boer

Well, everyone's entitled to their opinion, but I've never heard anyone
in Italy propose Rossi for the national team let alone a Euro team. And
Baresi *was* a great player, but he's looking well past it now (another
couple of glaring errors at the weekend).
Oops, I almost forgot to suggest Stephen "Orbitball" Staunton for the

Hmm, kind of like saying: "You mustn't forget that Mrs. Thatcher is a
Tory"!
Actually, I daresay I've always rated McGrath - one of the better players
to come out of London, er... Ireland, over the years. Having said that,
I don't know if he'd be considered for a Euro-team. Personally, I
alwasys preferred him whan he played in midfield, but I suppose the
years take their toll.
Hassler and Moller (sorry, I can't seem to coax an "umlaut" out of this
keyboard!) have both had their fair share of success out here in Italy.
Moller's made a great start to this season and appears to be the more
in-form player of the two, but Hassler's a great crowdpleaser with
Roma. He also happens to be perhaps the best free kick specialist in
Italy at the moment.
Perhaps Van Basten's worth a mention, although he's been so
injury-prone in recent years that I doubt if he'll ever get back to his
best.
