A question for you all that might just enable me to win a 4AD record I'm after (tapes to anyone who can answer the question): Which football club's record has just come out in a sleeve designed by 4AD's Vaughan Oliver? In fact if anyone can tell me _any_ club that has released (or re-released) a record recently (April or May 1992), that would give me quite a lot to be going on with. One piece of more or less useful information: Vaughan Oliver's work is definitely "arty" (Cocteau Twins covers are typical) and is often signed or initialled with a "23" or "23 envelope" rather than his name. Thanks, Piers

If the record was released in April/May of this year then it most was by one of the teams in the cup final, Liverpool or Sunderland as it is almost traditional for the finalists to release records. As I haven't heard either record I would opt for sunderland, esp. if 4AD are based in the northeast of england. ( millions of liverpool fans would push their song into the charts. The other possiabilty is that it is the England team song for the Europeen Championships. This won't get much airplay here in Ireland so I havn;t heard ih either. ColourBox released a song for the '86 world cup ( on 4AD ) but I don't recall if it was offical or not. Sleve was a picture of Jimmy Hill. New Order did the offical song for the '90 world cup. So I guess it's either Sunderland of England.

You can count out the New Order one, that was on Factory records. Ian

Colourbox... I remember buying that record, but it was most definitely "unofficial". But it was indeed on 4AD. And yes, New Order is n Factory, so that's out. But it's the club, not the group, that they're talking about. Sunderland sounds likely, but someone has suggested Leeds' re-release of their 1972(?) cup winners song. Anyone know more about this? Thanks for the feedback so far, Piers

This doesn't exactly answer your question but somebody might know of a link that might provide a definate answer.. The Sunderland FA Cup song was a rehash of Ain't No Stopping us now (were in the groove).. And it was crap like the team (OOOOoooooppss). Gary..

There was a song called The Roker Roar by Lloyd Hulme and the supporters club released in time for the cup final last season. As far as I know that was only released in the North-East of England. It wasn't an official Sunderland single. Don't know who designed the sleeve etc.. Rich |
