221.0. "USA Noters game vs. Canada XI" by SALES::THILL () Mon Jun 01 1992 01:12

    There was a mention in the "friendly" topic about this, and I realize
    it may be a little late, but....

    How many of you U.S. based noters would be interested in a friendly
    game with Jim McCann's (TROU31::MCCANN) Over-30 team that will be here
    for the Ireand games this weeek?

    The game would be on Friday evening, June 5th, about 6:00 in Acton.
    Acton is off Route 2, west of Boston, for those who don't know the
    area.

    I still have to iron out the fields situation, but once this is
    definite, I'll say for sure what the plan is.

    Jeff-the-Ref will ref, Nick Pilato and Fred Zerbi, I think you guys
    said you might be interested....Anyone else? I figure that this should
    be more for the notrers in this conference, rather than peopld from the
    DEC 7/side league, but if we need players, that can be our next move..
    H
    Short notice, but worth a try.

221.1WE HAVE A FIELD!!CARTUN::BERGARTMon Jun 01 1992 15:1150
    The field IS NOW DEFINITE! We have the School Street Field #1, an
    11v11 regulation, lined, nice field with goals. An Acton BU16 team
    practices there on Friday from 5 to 6:30, but they've agreed to move
    over to the next field at about 6 when we're ready. (So if you get
    there before 6, please stay off the large "official" field. There is
    plenty of room to warm-up all around it).

    The field is located on School St and can be seen from Route 2 going
    East.

    	<------East                                           West---->

    		Concord Rotory School St Piper Rd
    		(next to Prison) Fields Traffic light ^South

								     |Rt495
    								     vNorth

    From Route 495, take Rt. 2 East towards Acton, Concord, Boston.
    You'll go approx. 5 miles past two exits for Acton, and will come
    to the Piper Road Traffic light. Go straight and you'll see the
    School Street fields on your right just over the hill about 1 mile.
    Turn right onto School Street and park next to the field.

    From Boston, Take Route 2 West towards Acton. Go 180 degrees around
    the Concord Rotory (opposite the prison), and continue west on Rt 2.
    (Do not go onto 2A/119 - go straight through the rotory). About 1/4
    mile up you'll see the fields on your left. However, since route 2 is
    a divided highway, you'll have to go to the Piper Road traffic light
    (About 1 mile further), and take a U turn at the light.

    One more thing:

    	Since the Canadians have a big Match Saturday afternoon, and since
    this ref wants to live to tell about it the following monday, THIS
    WILL BE CLASSIFIED AS A FRIENDLY MATCH!! EVERYONE WHO WANTS TO PLAY
    SHOULD BE PREPARED TO HAVE FUN!!

    	Sorry for the shouting. I just have seen too many friendly games
    turn into a "test of manliness or womanhood". As I tell the kids, "It
    shouldn't hurt to play Soccer." And if the above "plea" didn't work,
    perhaps you'll be good because this will be this FIFA certified Ref's
    very first international match! Thank you. I look forward to seeing
    you all on Friday.

221.2An Under-30 Welsh player?AIMTEC::WICKS_ALiverpool win the F.A Cup again!Mon Jun 01 1992 18:5713
    Tom,

    I'm definitely in - two questions (slightly tongue-in-cheek)

    I assume that this will not be an "ageist" game and that people under
    30 will be allowed to play (:==:)

    I'm playing on the U.S team I take it - hang on i'll check whether my
    "work permit" allows that.

    Regards,

    Andrew.D.Wicks
221.3Well, we've got two players.....SALES::THILLMon Jun 01 1992 21:5623
    Glad to see you'll be playing with us, Andy. A Welsh ringer! I hear you've
    got the touch of Dean Saunders and the speed of Ian Rush, so that anything
    short of a hat-trick will be a major disapointment.

    Since we could use anywhere from 15 to 18 players, it might be nice to
    get people who regularyly read this file to play, but failing that, I
    can see about players from the DEC Soccer 7/side league. No doubt there
    would be plenty of available players, but like the English noters and
    their 5/side tournament, I figure first crack should go to people from
    here. End of the day Tuesday will be the deadline before I solicit
    other non-noters.

    So all you US based noters (even you read-only people), this is your
    chance to show your stuff in an international match!

    The tone will be a friendly, fun game, as Jeff-the-Ref assured me that
    he wants to save his cards for the unruly teenagers in his next match.

    By the way, Jim, what color shirts does your team wear? We can arrange
    to wear whatever color you don't wear.

    Tom

221.4TROU31::MCCANNTue Jun 02 1992 01:339
Tom,

	We'll probably be in our blue shirts with white and gold trim.
	We also will probably bring a red strip down as well but I can't
	sure - not everyone has a red shirt.

	probably seeya on Thursday

Jim
221.5We'll wear WHITE shirtsSALES::THILLTue Jun 02 1992 15:1613
    Jim,

    We'll make it easy and wear white shirts, so no matter what color you
    end up wearing, we'll be able to easily tell the difference.

    For the Thursday game, I'll be in Section 111, so it looks like we'll
    be on the opposite sideline. I'll probably be wearing my blue Italia
    shirt. I'll keep an eye out for the "pajama top" of the Manchester
    United away strip in the middle section across the way.

    Cheers,

    Tom

221.7thanks for the gameTROU31::MCCANNThu Jun 11 1992 19:4721
	Just like to say thanks for the game - we needed to shake the
	cobwebs out. I would like especially to say thanks to Tom for
	arranging the game - I'm sorry I didn't get to meet you Tom.
	It was great to meet fellow noter Andrew Wicks - Andrew keep up
	the great notes.

	Also would like to say thanks to Jeff the ref for doing a great
	job under sometimes difficult circumstances. The game was for the
	most part very clean although there were a couple of tackles
	that were harsh. Jeff, keep it up and good luck in the future.

	Also thanks to Dan Fay, not only for scoring against us but also
	scoring for us the next day against the Irish Village Pub. We knew
	we would be hurting the next day, so we recruited Dan to join our
	team for a game.

	Perhaps we can do this again next year, I hear England and Germany
	might be coming to the Boston area. Your also welcome to come up
	here to Canada for a game. Anyway once again, thanks.

Jim
221.8Thanks, Jeff!SALES::THILLFri Jun 12 1992 14:5114
    Sorry I couldn't make the game. This really was made possible bu
    Jeff-the-ref, who untangled the bureacratic haze, allowing us to get a
    field for the night. I had tried several places with no luck, and was
    just about to give up on the idea.

    Also, Nick Howorth (the goalie) deserves credit, since I dumped this in
    his lap with little notice. Jim, you did well to pick up Dan Fay, as
    he's a real solid player.

    Hopefully we can do this again next year, and this time, I'll make sure
    I'll be able to play, no matter what!
