There seems to be little interest in the ongoing Olympic tournament.
Anyway the standings that I remember offhand so far are:
Group A (after two rounds):
Poland are already through to the -finals, after beating Italy 3-0.
Italy and Kuwait (not sure, could be US) fight it out for the second
place.
Group B (after two rounds):
Spain and Qatar are already through having won their respective matches.
Group C (after one round)
Sweden 0 Paraguay 0
Morocco 1 South Korea 1
Group D (after one round)
Denmark 1 Mexico 1
Ghana v Australia (don't know result)

216.6 | The best players in the olympics? | STKOFF::SPERSSON | Pas de probleme | Tue Jul 28 1992 11:01 | 37 |
|
I'd like to bring up a discussion about the significance of the olympic
tournament.
As most of you know, the olympics don't make a difference between
professionals and amateurs anymore. Instead, the competition is open
for Under-23s only. This has been enforced by FIFA in order to keep the
World Cup as *the* greatest football tournament.
While this is a perfect competition for the countries to expose their
youth teams, it has not gone down too well with either the crowds or
the IOC. The attendances so far have been very disappointing compared
to the other team sports. Although admittedly I have only seen one game
myself (Sweden v Paraguay, a terrible bore draw), the quality of the
Football seems below par too. Now the IOC president Samaranch has
threatened to throw out Football from the olympic agenda unless FIFA
allows the best players to compete.
What about it folks? Would you like to see Gullit in the next Olympics?
I must confess I find it a very tempting thought. It would in effect
mean that the World Cup takes place every other year. It would also mean
that the sport itself gets more focus in the un-enlightened parts of
the world.
There are some obvious problems to be solved:
- The various continental championships (Europe, South America etc) and
their qualifying games occupy most or all of the available time between
the World Cup and the Olympics. This is a major issue.
- The UK's (or Great Britain or whatever they wish to call themselves)
divine right to field 4 different national sides is not compatible with
the olympic order. This is a minor issue.
What do you think?

216.7 | Bad ref's | VMSSG::FUERTES | | Tue Jul 28 1992 17:02 | 16 |
| I saw the game of Spain vs Colombia and one major problem that I saw
was the refereeing. I am not sure about the other games but this
particular ref (a German I believe) was the worst ref I have ever seen
in my life. Everytime any one slide tackles it was an automatic foul
(unless the olympics rules say that slide takle is a foul). This ref
gave so many yellow cards, that my friends and I started laughing
because we were able to predict when he was about to give one. He also
gave out red cards (2 for each team). Any player that could semi-act
when getting touched could draw a yellow card for the opponent. Spain
won the game (deserved it, they were the better team) but the flow of
the game was totally destroyed by this particular ref.
Refereeing must improve in these olympics if soccer is to survive.

| Stefan,
If you're counting votes, I'd vote for dropping football from the Olympics. As
you said, it's just an artificial competition as they can't have the best
players. And please spare us the 'World Cup' every two years! It'll devalue the
worth of both competitions if they're played so often.
The Olympics is too big, everyone says - football could start the move in the
right direction.

216.13 | Compromise expected | STKOFF::SPERSSON | Pas de probleme | Fri Jul 31 1992 09:30 | 38 |

Re .10
Grahame,
Yes I'm counting votes. The overwhelming response so far reveals that
exactly 50% are in favour with reservations (me), and exactly 50% are
definitely against (you). Stay tuned as this drama unfolds.
Anyway the UEFA president Lennart Johansson said yesterday he was
disappointed in the organization and marketing of the current
tournament. Apart from the Football tournament, the olympics is a huge
success with the crowds. I don't know who Johansson is trying to fool.
Maybe he was expecting the Football tournament to draw as large crowds
as in Los Angeles and Seoul. What he forgot though is that the
Barcelona crowds get to see top Football every week, and that both
Barcelona's league teams would stand a fair chance of winning the
tournament. There is absolutely no reason for Barcelona's Football
connaiseurs to to gather for this event. Johansson also said that there
will be no Football tournament in Atlanta if the IOC continues to
require that the best players participate. He stated that there simply
is no way to fit it into the schedule, and that FIFA and UEFA have to
"protect" their own tournaments.
What it boils down to of course is money. FIFA and UEFA (and the other
continent's associations) make huge profits from their tournaments, in
the olympics all the money that is generated is controlled by the IOC.
I expect heavy negotiations between FIFA and the IOC, in which FIFA
will demand a huge piece of the cake in order to change their rules.
Eventually this will lead to a compromise where FIFA gets some
compensation in return for letting in some of the older players (lets
say the basic format stays the same but 2-3 over-age players are
allowed)
cheers,
Stefan

The final was a very good game (judging from the second half, which I

everyone were preparing for extra-time.
Notable attendees: Samaranch and King Juan Carlos. Notable absentees:
the presidents of FIFA and UEFA, another move in the ongoing prestige
battle.
