208.0. "The Ground Note." by BAHTAT::BLYTHE (Leeds United. Champions 91-92) Tue May 05 1992 18:10

There doesn't seem to be one of these :-

    The Ground Note.

During the Summer, many famous grounds will be changed out off all
recognition, generally for the good. The Football Supporter has had to
put up with CRAP facilities for too long, the Taylor Report has at last
made the Clubs cough up and improve their stadiums. The loss of
Terracing will be mourned by some, I hope (with some doubt) that Clubs
won't take advantage and put prices up.

Leeds United	New East Stand (see 33.late for more details)
Man Utd Stretford End all seater
Man City Platt lane stand renewal
Liverpool New Stand / all seater Kop (next season ?)
    Arse North Bank replacement
    Villa Holte End ?

on the other side of the coin we will have :-

Barnsley Remains CRAP, hardly any seats, all open terracing
Newcastle All talk and no action
    Sunderland ditto

    and many others

There was a good article in the Torygraph on Saturday, I'll see if I
    still have it.

If England and English teams are to do well in Europe, then they need
to have decent stadiums an offer you and me (the paying punter) decent
facilities, else the 'turn on the TV and watch it' will become the norm
    and the game will die.

(nb, many of theses comments apply to Scottish teams as well. Rangers
ground may be well equipped, but Celtic is not, Hampden has a lot of
open terracing, and Tynecastle is squeezed in to a residential area in
    Edinburgh).

    Any comments ?

I thought all-seater stadiums were a good idea, until they put seats
into the St. End at Goodison.

    After one season, my thoughts are;

i	It has killed the atmosphere

ii	The terrace wasn't purpose built for seats, so you can't see the
whole pitch - in the past, there'd be pushing and shoving and a few
surges, but now all that happens is everyone stands up when they can't
    see the ball.

iii	The seats (in the St. End) are all unreserved, so you have get in
early if you want to sit with your mates.

iv	Prices WILL go up - this season, it was 7 to sit in the St End,
next season I believe it's planned to increase it to 10 to make up for
    the reduced capacity.....

Mind you what do you expect from a report written by a chap whom has
probably never ever attended a game let alone stood for one.

All because of Hillsborough. With respect would seats on that occaision
saved lives. I understood that a great deal perished in the tunnell
    leading to the terrace.

I've no wish to open a debate on Hillsborough again. Just my opinion.

    Regards,

    Barry.

    re the last 2 :-

There was a stand collapse in Corsica on Tuesday night, about 20 killed
and hundreds injured, some seriously. Apparently, it was a temporary
one, and had been passed by the local safety inspectors. The game was
a semi final of the French Cup, between the Corsicans and
    Marseille.

The Corsican team played in a small stadium, so to let as many people
watch the game as possible temporary stand was built.

UEFA have now banned all temporary stands from UEFA run games.

At the end of the day, the fans' safety is paramount.

208.6FIFA now bans stands (...hand stands & band stands)XSTACY::KMCGRATHLong road, patient donkeyThu May 14 1992 12:459
FIFA has decided that no temporary stands will be allowed anymore, in
view of the Corsica incident. It was crazy in the first place to allow
an unsafe stand like that be used. I'm not for banning all temporary
stands, however, just let FIFA put down some very rigid safety rules
    which must be stuck to.

The temporary seats which were put in on the terraces at Lansdowne road
are apparantly not considered a temporarty "stand" and are allowed to
    be used.
208.7I WOULD RATHER HAVE A CHOICE ,SIT OR STANDSIOG::DAWSONFri Aug 14 1992 17:5519

I have a temporary seat booked in lansdowne rd for all the home matchs
for the world cup. I,ve already been to three matchs in these seats
and i must admit i was a bit nervous the first match ,especially when
everyone started stamping their feet in unison and the seats started
to shake.but they seem solid enough and are reasonably comfortable.

re : a few back on The Gladys st end of Goodison park,It really has
ruined the atmosphere by putting in seats ,there is nothing like a good
"jump in the air" when your team scores etc or the closeness of a
standing crowd at a match. The seats ruin this and as was pointed out
when a ball goes into the corners ,everyone stands up ,so you have to
to see anything(i always sit behind the biggest person in the ground
    anyway).

    cheers

    Liam
