    Hi everyone,

My name is Barry and I'm a Baggie supporter. I share this account with
Terry (Sheffield Wednesday fan), so I can't be blamed for everything
that is written for the Commit account.

Like Terry, I rarely miss a match. The last game I went to we won 2-0
against Mansfield. That was quite a good performance, though we have
    to take more chances.

On Boxing day, we entertain Chester City and on the 28th we play the mighty
Plymouth Arg away. I've been their this season. They knocked us out of
the Coca Cola cup 2-1 on Agg.

Then we have West Ham in the cup at the Hawthorns. A good draw and I
    think we'll beat em'.

Have a happy Christmas everyone and a good New year - except Wolves,
Aston Villa, Birmingham City, Stoke City, Port Vale, West Ham and
    Plymouth.

    Cheers

    A Christmas summery......

West Brom (1)2 Chester City (0)0
    Raven (2)

Two goals in each half by our centre half Raven, sealed another win.
An usual neat performance by our boys against a hard-working Chester
team. Raven took both goals well and the attendance was over 15,000.
Stoke won away to Reading 1-0 and still lead us by nine points.

Plymouth Argyle (0)0 West Brom (0)0

Our second visit to Plymouth this season. This was a better
performance and though under a lot of pressure at times, we did deserve
a draw. One thing worries me though and that is the fact that we don't
    score enough goals.

    FA CUP 3rd RND
West Brom (0)0 West Ham (2)2
                                   C Allen
                                   Robson

A game which could have gone either way in the first half. West Ham
proved to be a good footballing side deserved (If i'm honest) the win.

Taylor could have scored in the first couple of minutes for the Albion
but he wasted a chance. Allen could have scored a couple of minutes
    later but Naylor saved well.

The game had a pattern of West Ham attacked twice and then the Albion
    attacked once.

After 33 minutes Clive Allen scored. I missed the goal due to shaking
    hands with the Bishop!!!

The second which killed us off was a soft goal to concede. Robson
crossed the ball on the right and Allen (I think) dummied the ball and it
beat Stuart Naylor. Up to that I thought we could at the very least get a
    draw.

In the second half, it was getting hard to see due to the fog. Bradley
hit a post early on and then West Ham dominated. It was again another
case of not being able to score.

Though we are playing some great football, the chances aren't going in
    the back of the net.

If anyone saw the Daily Mirror report on the game - then don't believe
it. it wasn't as one sided as they said, though it was worring to
think how bad we were against a class team.

On Tuesday we have Walsall at home in the Autoglass. If we win our
table we've got Plymouth, Exeter or Torquay in the next round. How
    bloody exciting!!!

    Happy new year

    Heggs 87

I decided not to go to this because I'm skint. The clubcall which I
called at half time and again after the match said the Albion played
    well.

It was good to see "SUPER" Bob Taylor on the scoresheet even if it was
    a penalty.

Also a good crowd for this round of the Autoglass - 6,702.

We have Bolton at home on Saturday. They are climbing up the table,
but we will need to beat them to stay in touch with Stoke.

Then on Jan 16 we traval to Exeter for a league match.

Does anyone know if the Reading away game has been re-arranged yet?

    Cheers

Since I wrote in this note last, we've disposed of Bolton in the
league, Mansfield away in the Autoglass and Exeter in which the game
was a thriller. We came back from 2-0 down to win 3-2 with Ian
Hamilton getting the winner from the spot with 6 minutes left.

Away support has been good though I didn't go to the Mansfield game.
Attendances for recent away matches are 1,778 (Plymouth), 566
(Mansfield) in the Autoglass and 2,122 (Exeter).

David Speedie has joined us on loan and made his debut at the Stoke
game. Speedie is the sort of player you have to hate when he is
playing for the opponents but he is a good player to have on your side.

Against Stoke he looked dangerous in the first few minutes as did the
Albion. Stoke played on the break and on their left they caused most
problems with Stein being the main threat.

They took the lead after 11 minutes when a corner wasn't cleared and
Gleghorn beat Naylor to the ball to score.

A few Stoke fans ran onto the pitch and then into the Albion seats
where a scuffle broke out but the police sorted it out.

We thought we had a penalty when Speedie was tripped in the area. This
was a blatant trip but the ref didn't give it. Alf Bukish was the ref,
the worst in the football league. He bottled giving decisions and may
have cost cost us the league.

The game was end to end now with The Baggies showing more flair. Soon
after we scored when Bob Taylor ran through and smacked the ball past
Sinclair and into the net. The celebrations weren't for the faint
    hearted.

Another attack saw Speedie go close, Taylor with a header saved,
McNally just over the bar and Bradley just wide. At this point I
thought it was going to be like the Stoke away game but it was spoilt
by the ref. He was really whistle happy.

Then on 35 minutes we had the clearest penalty turned dowm. Lilwall
ran onto a long ball and beat the Stoke defender who had already
commited himself brought Lilwall clearly down and once again the ref
    didn't give it.

In the second half we didn't create much. At the back it was a
disaster. Stoke closed us down well.

Stoke's winner was scored from a corner. Naylor only punched the ball
to Russell whose shot which was going wide hit Mark Stein's arm and
    went in.

I don't want to talk about it anymore but we're away to Bournemouth in
a game we MUST win. Please god....

Brum seem to be going ok now.

Glad to see they have fully recovered from the Woking visit.

We haven't fully recovered from the Woking game because whenever we
draw a non-league side in the Cup everyone keeps bringing it up again
and no it wasn't me stamping on my scarf when we were 3-1 down. I did
it when we were 2-1 down.

Apart from Wycombe in the FA Cup this season everytime we play a
non-league side now we seem to whack em'. We beat Marlow 6-0 and
    Aylesbury 8-0.

Oh yeah, one last thing, just a technical point, West Brom are not not
Brum. WE ARE NOT FROM BIRMINGHAM. We are the pride of BLACK COUNTRY.
    We are BAGGIES.

Last night, we beat Torquay in the Autoglass Trophy 2-1. Donavan
scoring twice in the 87th and 90th minute. We also had Coldicott sent
off. We are now away to Stoke in the Area Quarter Final and I shall be
making the trip up their for that one.

Since the Stoke game, we've beaten Bournemouth 1-0, with Speedie
    scoring a superb goal.

Then, we drew with crappy Huddersfield 2-2. i cannot believe that we
gave up thinking we had won after going 2-0 up. Donavan and Speedie
    scored in this one.

Saturday away to Blackpool we lost 2-1, with Bob Taylor scoring. We
are now badly losing ground on Stoke.

I still haven't missed a league match (home & away), FA Cup (Home & Away)
or a Rumbelows Cup (Home & away), but I haven't been to an Autoglass
    match.

  Barry,

Thanks for the match reports, thay are well received by the Galway branch
of the Baggies supporters club. We are starved of class football here, and
have to live with Italian dramatics on Monday nights and weekly appearances
of Leeds/Man Utd on SKY. We also suffered the misfortune of a pre-season
visit from Birmingham City. This left a very poor image of Midlands football,
and forced us to rightsize our membership target for the season from 3 to 2
  (we're halfway there).

How's Speedie playing now he's had a few games at the club ? Will he sign
up, is he any good ? What's happened to Robson, I have seen him on the
scoresheet recently, is he injured ?

May all your scratchings be hairy ones...

177.9BOB TAYLOR IS GODSUBURB::COMMITCommit GroupWed Feb 10 1993 14:3838
Nice to hear from fellow West Brom fans. David Speedie, I think is
fitting in well and though I didn't think he would be any good at
first, he has proved me wrong. It will be interesting to see if we
sign him because Simon Garner should be back soon.

The posistion i'm more concerned about is the goalkeeper. Naylor is
having a bit of a nightmare. He is just so weak at corners and against
Stoke he really did cost us the game.

Darren Bradley, your be pleased to hear is back to his best. He
controls the midfield with Ian Hamilton and I believe we have the best
    midfield in the league.

Bernard McNally is another player doing superbly. He is a class player
and since Ossie joined we are playing the football which suits him.

I don't think we'll win the league as Stoke seem to be unstoppable at
the moment but I think we have to go up automatically. I think Port Vale
are the team to watch. They have a couple of games in hand and also
like Stoke are on a bit of a roll.

We seem to be throwing the league away, we should have beaten
Huddersfield and Blackpool was another we should have won.

We have Fulham at home on Saturday. The win is a must. Then two tough
matches away to promotion hopefuls Stockport and then the big one away
    to Port Vale.

    Barry

P.S I wouldn't worry about seeing Birmingham as everyone knows we're
the best footballing team in the Midlands.

P.P.S I've been told that SKY might be showing the Stoke V West Brom
game live in the Autoglass, Area Quarter Final. I'm looking forward to
    revenge.

The best performance from the Albion for a few weeks. The early goal
helped though, Stannard in the Fulham goal brought Speedo down after
two minutes. He was also lucky not to get sent off for a profesional
foul, instead he was given a yellow card. Bob Taylor scored his 15th
league goal of the season from the spot.

Hamilton and Bradley looked strong once again in the middle of the park
and Speedie also looked sharp up front.

Naylor again looked a little bit negitive with crosses favouring to
punch at every chance. That wouldn't be too bad but he doesn't come
off his line with any conviction.

The second goal came after 43 minutes Hamilton scoring. It has to be
said that I missed this goal due to queueing up for my half-time cuppa
    of Bovril.

Half-time came and passed, and with our new signing Micky Mellon coming
on the Albion attacked with the normal silky passing game which we love
to see at Albion and which you would never see anywhere else like
Wolves, Villa, Birmingham and Stoke for examples.

Mellon scored after 63 minutes and was also booked and Wayne Fereday
completed the rout after 68 minutes. Bradley also got booked for us.

Tomorrow sees us travel to the hoof for a boot boys Stoke for the
Autoglass Trophy quarter final. The game is I think on Sky though I
will be going to the game.

I think quality football will win through and give us a 3-1 win. If
you haven't seen the Albion this season then you may be in for a
    surprise.

Since I last wrote in things haven't gone well. We've been dumped out
of the Autoglass by Stoke. They have now beaton us three times this
    season.

Then even worse, we got beat by a very plain Stockport team who to the
credit took advantage of having a taller team by scoring all goals from
set pieces, this after Bob Taylor had given us the lead after 42
    minutes.

Port Vale next and again another defeat. This time 2-1. At Stockport
we dominated the first half and the same happened here. If you need to
visualise Hamilton's goal it was summed up in the Baggie... who said
"it was like the Saunders goal that everybody is raving about, the only
differance was Hammy actually meant the shot as it was". Nicky Cross
the Albion reject scored in the 58th minute and Foyle won the game when
he took a pass and slotted past Naylor.

Next the visit of Burnley and a comfortable 2-0 victory. Garner and
Taylor grabbing the goals. Micky Mellon came close to scoring one of
the goals of the season with an acrobatic kick which flew just over the
bar. Good to see Simon Garner back, we have missed him.

Brighton away and yet another frustrating away performance. Though in the
first half we dominated and should have had the game won. Taylor
penalty gave us the lead and Nogan and a poof called Andy Kennedy
sealed an underserved victory with two late goals.

Orient at home on Saturday. A poorer than poor first half though there
were little bits of magic especially by Bob Taylor whose shot on the
turn hit the post. Orient didn't offer to much but Lange who played in
goal instead of Naylor made a couple of good saves. In the second
half we were a lot more positive. Orient were happy to have every man
behind the ball. We thought we'd scored when Taylor and Donovan (I
think) got in each others way and both kicked the ball. It looked like
looping the O's goalie but he just tipped it over the bar. The goals
finally came towards the end. The keeper flapped at a corner and
Burgess headed in. The second was a neat move which ended in a
brilliant volleyed finish by Donavan. A much needed victory which
Bradley could have added too at the end but his shot was turned around
the post by an impressive keeper.

Looking forward to Hartlepool on Saturday.

Andy Hunt is a centre forward and he's probably only about 23 or 24. We
signed him from non-league (maybe Kettering).
He's played a few games for Newcastle and was almost a regular last
season. He had a bad ankle injury recently and has been out of the 1st
team picture ever since. He's quite a useful player actually, quite
skillfull but his finishing is woeful.

Andy Hunt is Jesus. We were 1-0 down at home to Brighton and starting
to get back to our old ways and then suddenly in the 79, 81, 86
minutes, Andy Hunt scored three typical strikers goals getting in to
the six yard box and slotting away. It was good to see an Albion
player get in the six yard box. it doesn't usually happen much.

Swansea at home Wednesday. They didn't impress me away so hopefully
we'll beat em and put more pressure on Port Vale.

Reading away on Wednesday. NOT all-ticket. We need the three
points to keep the pressure on Port Vale who are four points
ahead of us. After the game against Plymouth I was thinking
about not even getting in the play-offs but thanks to a great
victory at Mansfield helped by the brilliant Andy Hunt we have
an outside chance of going up straight away.

Reading need the win as well and knowing us we'll dominate the
game, totally outclass them but lose 1-0.

       I hope I'm wrong.

My second visit to the Vetch this season made me realise
just what a dump Swansea is.

Anyway got in the ground late (10 Minutes before kick-off).
Around 4,000 Baggies packed behind the goal had made the
         journey.

On to the game now. We looked the better side early on Ian
Hamilton shot over the bar with a long shot. Swansea came
back and created a good chance but Lange saved well.

In the second half we started really well. When we thought
we were looking the better side we concede a goal. McFarlane
scored as our defence looked just like the defence of old.
None of them wanted to clear the ball and we paid the price.

Arsenal and Celtic reject Hayes got the second. He scored from
a cross by Legg. Well that was it, we're staying down was our
reaction but too the players credit they battled.

Darryl Burgess hit the bar and the ball smacked McFarlane
(scorer of Swansea's first) on the head and the ball rolled over
the line and in. What a goal. Have you ever cheered and laughed
at the same time. The Swansea end was a picture. Standing there
silent. They were obviously thinking about last night spent with
some sheep that turned them down. It was our turn to sing the
annoying "You're not singing anymore" song and this gem...

         I can't read
         I can't write
         But that don't really matter
Cos I come from Wales and I drive a tractor.

Also some strange sheep noises coming from our end.

Back to the remaining minutes though and Andy Hunt could have
snatched another goal but his shot was well saved. Ian Hamilton
and Raven were booked for us.

Tomorrow is the 2nd leg and the game IS ALL-TICKET. The club will
be taking bookings tomorrow morning though and there are plenty of
         tickets left.

Well it seems that our 38,000 tickets have virtually sold

a further 7,000 tickets but that could be increased to 10,000.

Yessssss. We're up. A great day. A great match and a great
performance. 42,000 Baggie boys were there and to say it was
amazing would be an understatment. The Albion end was like a
carnival. Everyone joined in the "Boing boing Baggies Baggies"
         chant everyone sang.

The Vale might as not have been there for all the noise they made.

Anyway on to the game. Vale looked better at the start but the
first half was generally a boring half. The best chance fell to
Donovan but he shot over when he should have scored.

I was quite glad when the first half was over. We never
controlled it and didn't really get going.

Into the second half and this was a different affair. We started
better and Donovan had another chance but the Vale keeper saved
well. Then with Bob Taylor through on goal he was hacked from
behind and Swann was sent off. He deserved to go for the fact
that it gave us an advantage. Soon after Strodder hit the post
and the ball rolled out to the edge of the area and the cross was
met by Hunt who headed in. Brilliant stuff...

Port Vale never really threatened and it was no surprise when
Donovan broke and his pass to found Nicky Reid who made the goal
look so easy. That was surly it. 8 minutes left and we were
         2-0 up.

The celebrations had started and Donovan injected more life into
         them when he scored.

The final whistle soon went to the huge roar. We had won. My
feeling at that moment is impossible to describe. The players
went up to get there trophy. Every player got a deserved cheer.
The lap of honour was sweet as well. "Say we are going up, say
we are going up" was the main chant. Ian Hamilton did an
impression of Paul Merson drinking beer.

When leaving the ground the atmosphere was brilliant. Singing &
dancing. I liked the bit when a couple of Port Vale coaches
went past us. I love that. You should have seen there faces. A
few V-signs came from there fans. That just made us laugh. We
         were up.

Half-way back to where we belong. We have a great team for the
future. Lets just hope we don't sell anyone and Ossie stays.

Everything has sorted it self out since Ossie left. I was sad
to see him go but as his replacement is Keith Burkenshaw it
isn't too bad. Keith is the former Tottenham manager that
brought Ossie to England. I'm sure he will do just as well.
Keith was the the assistant manager last season so at least he
         knows the players.

We have signed two players in the pre-season. Kieran O'Reagan
from Huddersfield and England Under 21 winger Lee Ashurst from
Prseton North End. Andy Hunt from Newcastle signed as well. I
         love him.

Pre-season results have been mixed. I went to them all and have
to admit to being impressed with the football we've played though
         the results weren't that impressive.

The Chelsea game was great. We played some super football. I
would say that teams don't have too worry about Chelsea in the
Premier league but it was only a friendly so who cares???

I've been told that we have six players out of the first league
match but I'm not sure who they are except for Stuart Naylor.
That isn't too bad because I expect Tony Lange to play in goal

I forgot to say that having viewed the game twice, I feel the better
team lost. Bob Taylor looked p%ss poor and Albion didn't have many
attacking ideas except for the ball out wide and then a deep cross from
Ampadu. I also reckon when Hunt scored they should have thrown more
players forward. They didn't seem to do that and that cost em' good
    and proper.

Trever Summers was in the press saying that he's getting rid of some of
the players. There is money available he said.

Burkinshaw has just signed a new four year contract.

I went to the Hawthorns yesterday with my mate Stuart who has now
    completed 86 grounds.

    What a load of rubbish...

Forest were crap but West Brom just didn't have a clue. The crowd was
    quite all through the game.

Stan Collymore was the difference between the teams but he is a
complete w&*ker. When he scored the first he celebrated in front of
the Birmingham Road End gesturing at the fans. He deserved the coins
that were thrown at him. Too many players are inciting trouble nowdays
and the sooner it stops the better.

Apart from Andy Hunt hitting the post West Brom played without passion
and without any clues. A bloody waste of money!

What a diiference a week makes. Went up to West Brom with my mate who
did the honours of driving. A great journey as Guns N' Roses new album
blasted away. Then we had Duff's new album. He, if you don't know is
the bass player out of Guns. Anyway, what a great journey.

Got in the ground at 2.45pm. We stood in the Birmingham Road End. If
you don't know the ground its an covered kop which is situated
    behind the goal.

Bob Taylor who is reported to be wanted by Spurs was in a class off his
own. He scored the first and set up the rest. West Brom fans love him
and I think he has a big part to play in how well Albion do this
    season.

West Brom's first half performance was superb. They didn't give Pompey
a minute on the ball. The first goal was a typical Albion goal.
Taylor getting on the end of a cross. The second was another typical
of Albion's pressure. Pompey had chances to clear the ball but they
didn't and it ended up on the foot of Kieran O'Reagon who blasted past
the helpless Alan Knight. Taylor set him up by chesting the ball in
    his path.

Into the second half and an incident after 56 minutes which swung the
game totally. Andy Hunt through on goal and Andy Awford pulled him
down. The ref couldn't have seen it or Awford would have got the red
card. Two minutes later and Pompey were back in it. A goal which
looked like swinging the game. I thought at this stage it would be a
    draw. Pompey were strong.

They came close once or twice before Bob Taylor went on a superb run,
he commited the goalkeeper and rolled the ball to Andy Hunt to wrap the
game up and make it 3-1. You could see the relief in the Albion
    players. Superb stuff!

A minute before time and from another Taylor cross, Andy Hunt dived in
to make the game 100% safe with his second of the game. A great day
had by all. Andy Hunt and Bob Taylor look a great partnership. If
Taylor stays I wouldn't be surprised to see Albion climb that table and
maybe win a play off place.

    Superb journey home!!!

Went to Southend at the weekend with my mate who again did the honours
and drove. Great journey down there. Apart from we had to listen to
his new Meatloaf album. Shame that... Luckily we also had Guns N'
Roses, Aerosmith and perhaps the greatest thing to come out of
    Manchester. The Happy Mondays.

On the beach about 10.30 and I won a tenner. The bet was if I had the
bottle to go in the sea. I had to go underwater and get all my body
wet. I did this and won the tenner though i've now got a cold.

On the way down there I said to my mate that this is the best time to
play Southend with all whats happened to them in the past couple of
    weeks. I was again right.

In the ground. Roots Hall is a small ground with a main stand like
Reading's. On the Southend bench sat Barry Fry...sorry it was Mr
Blobby but he does look as fat as Barry Fry.

Onto the game itself and the first half was fairly even. No clear
chances but West Brom were looking better despite Ricky Otto getting
behind the Albion defence a couple of times. 0-0 was about right and
Southend didn't look too effected by the departure of Barry Fry.

The second half started and Southend stepped up a gear. Only a slight
gear as they never really caused problems until the 59th minutes when
Paul Marsdon was judged to have handled a shot on the line. Looked
bloody harsh from where I was standing and again it looked like the
same out story. Only this time Tony Lange saved it and held on to it!

A minute later Albion attack and a Lee Ashcroft cross is headed in by
Ian Hamilton and that was the first. 1-0 to Albion and in the space of
a minute the game had changed completely.

More good work from Ashcroft on the right. The ball fell to Taylor who
slid the ball under the Southend keeper and that looked like the points
    were tied up.

Another goal and this was a messy one. Andy Hunt finishing from on the
line after an exciting scramble. The rest of the game was
predictable. Albion defended well and the travelling army of about
2,000 Albion fans celebrated with the usual "Boing Boing Baggie
    Baggie".

First away win of the season and I'm looking forward to travelling to
    Birmingham City on 28th December.

    Gary,

I also went to the match, however I was supporting the bules. Your
match report was 100% correct (however, after a dip in the sea
your judgement may have been affected).

I was seated just by the dug-out and Mr Blobby looked in good
    health.

George Graham was also at the match, he stayed until about half
way into the second half. I think he came to see Ricky Otto. Not
sure what he thought, but as Ricky didn't do much in the second
half I guess that's why he left. Then again was he after the
    Southend job...

After the penalty miss it all went wrong. But thats when the
entertainment got going. Your fans were just 1st class, the party
atmosphere was great. The Boing Boing Baggie Baggie was great.
What's the history behind it, why do you do it.

I understand that the 'Boing Boing Baggie Baggie' was just started by
some fans at a home match. I'm not sure what is behind it all but it
really gets going especially away from home. The best one i've been in
was the one against Wolves though that was at home.

Last season it wasn't that big but it really caught on at Wembley.
40,000 Baggie people jumping up and down. A great sight...

Southend aren't a bad side. I think once this new manager settles then
    they'll be okay.

I hear that Barry Fry might sign Brett Angell and Ricky Otto for
Birmingham. They'll miss them two. Otto is dangerous.

I agree that my judgement might have been affected by the sea. Mr
Blobby is slimmer and better looking than Barry Fry:-)

Good Luck for the rest of the season,

A bad Christmas for me. All my money has been spent on watching three
poor performances from the Midlands top club.

I didn't go against Bristol City on Boxing day. Thankfully.
Apparently West Brom lacked ideas and didn't create that much. Lost
    1-0.

Went to Birmingham on the 28th. Poor performance from the Albion and I
don't like Brummies much. Defence was poor. Forwards lacked ideas and
almost got in a fight with some locals. Not a good day.

Luton on New Years day was memorable for the journey home. Best bit of
it. Guns N' Roses "Appetite For Destruction" at full volume made the trip
worthwhile. On the field Luton got at the West Brom defence and caused
problems. WBA deserved a draw in the end but games like that should be
    won.

Charlton was the best game for me. West Brom deserved a draw and had a
real go at them but Charlton just clung on in the end. They grabbed a
second with two minutes left only for Ian Hamilton to score straight
    away.

Well yesterdays game should have been called off. I've never seen it
rain so hard. The pitch had puddles and the ball wasn't helping
    Albion's super passing game.

Gary Strodder (Remember him West Ham fans) was centre forward and he
didn't do too bad scoring a super equalizer.

Clearly the best long ball team won on the night but I did enjoy the
equalizer especially as the away end was next to the home end and their
supporters didn't enjoy the baiting. Ha ha....

West Brom didn't play too well but with Bob Taylor and Andy Hunt
    injured is it any surprise.

I also hear that crappy old Villa won thanks to an error by the super
Spurs keeper. Seems the only way Villa win nowdays is via a mistake by
the other side or some diving by Deano Saunders (V Exeter). No point

Suggestion for you. Why don't you just cut out the middle bit of your

your otherwise perfect day. Perhaps you and your mate could get in his

metal tapes and then get out of the car at about 4.40 to listen to the

Maybe on special days (i.e. WBA playing in the Freight Rover) you could
have a Kentucky Bargain Bucket and play Led Zeppelin. Just a thought.

If you couldn't already guess, that was the highlight of another great
day in the life of SUBURB::WAITEG.

Isn't life depressing. What does the future hold for us???

Well the future for WBA could be decided in a tough February...
Sunderland (H), Watford (A), Leicester (H), Oxford (A) and then Wolves
    (A).

Anyway about Saturdays game. WBA were gutless, clueless, thick and it
was a complete waste of money. Peterboro weren't much better. I could
make up excuses like Tony Lange was injured and replaced by Stuart
Naylor after 11 minutes or I could say WBA missed Bob Taylor and Andy
Hunt up front or I could state that with Paul Marsdon pulling out just
before kick off, Albion were forced to play Gary Strodder in defence
    and were very disorganised.

I'm sure a Villa fan would have gone on about the injuries for years
but not me. Oh no.... Injuries are bad luck but a good side will
always have the squad players to fill the injured players places.
Unfortuantely WBA don't have much of a squad. Bob Taylor is expected
fit on Saturday and i'm really excited about going.

Keith Burkenshaw must buy now. A defender, a forward or maybe he needs
a new team. He wanted to give the players from last season a chance.
He's given em' a chance and they have failed.

At least we can stop and have a McDonalds in Birmingham Town centre.
I think i'll have a Big Mac, fries and Strawbury Shake. Oh and ketchup
    on the Big Mac.

    Not very happy,

Football fan Gary Silk took a ride in a pal's Bentley to watch his
team...and died in a horrific crash on the way home.

Father-of-two Gary, 33 tossed up whether to go to the match because it
was the eve of his daughter's birthday.

He spun a coin - and when it came down "Heads" he joined his mates on
the drive to Leicester in the 40,000 thousand Bentley turbo.

Gary's team West Bromwich Albion lost 4-2.

And on the return journey to Birmingham he and another man died in a
head-on-crash with a lorry on the A5 near Nuneaton, Warwickshire.

Last night Gary's widow was comforting their Children, Lauren, seven
and nine-year-old Luke at their home in Birmingham.

Come on guys, there are average joe soaps being killed in car smashes
every day. Be they football fans or not, you can't expect every one to
be publicly mourned. It strikes me that the last few replies are from
non Manchester United fans. Matt Busby is/was a football legend and a
hero to many thousands throughout the world, that's why his death has
been headlines news, same as when Elvis, John Lennon etc died.

     Danny.

FWIW - I read the story of the supporters death in a daily paper in

I find your attitude a little sad. Like Tim said this was a lot more
tragic. The man travels to watch WBA away to Leicester on the eve of
his daughters ninth birthday and dies in a car crash on the way home.
Matt Busby lived to 84 had a good life etc.... whilst this man lived
to 33 and died with two young children who were both aged under 10.

Okay he might not have been a football legend, but does that really
matter. I didn't expect to read a note like that in 177.77. The

West Bromwich Albion (0)0 Millwall (0)0

No music this week. The reason being we took the train up and it was
an enjoyable day. We had a Wimpy early on and then made our way to the
ground via the 74 bus. If you don't know the area then get the bus.
It stops right outside the ground.

We had the news that West Brom are planning to play a Villa All-stars
in a benefit match for the families of the two men that died in a car
crash on the way back from Leicester. I'm not sure of the other mans
    name.

The minute silence was joint for the two Albion fans that died and Sir
Matt Busby. The ground was silent (including Millwall fans) as the men
got the respect they deserved. Even a few tears were shed.

The game itself was far from a classic. Both teams took too long to
get going and the first half was a bit of a non-event. Albion coming
close on a couple of occasions but just not finishing well. Millwalls
best chance in the first came a minute before half time when a shot was
    well saved by Naylor.

In the second half the game stepped up its pace and the best chance of
a goal came on 54 minutes when Etienne Verveer (sp???) was threw on
goal and as Naylor came out Verveer spooned his shot wide. From the
angle I was sitting at in the Rainbow Stand, I thought it was in.

Albion had more half chances. Maybe Taylor should have done better
from a couple these. The best was when he was through on goal only to cross
    the ball instead of shooting.

Millwall had another great chance when keith Stevens header was
    brilliantly saved by Naylor.

Millwall had a player sent off near the end for his second bookable
offence. He over-reacted to a free kick being given to Albion.

In the end a draw was a fair result.

Some years ago WFC and BR built a station (Watford Halt) just next to

A great day. Arrived at Watford Junction around 12.45pm. Took the
long walk from the station to the ground. Not a bad walk actually.
Watford didn't look a bad place. Had a Shish kebab at the local kebab
place. Not a bad effort. Though i'm no fan of raw onions.

Walking around the ground, I came across a fanzine seller. "Is Bob
Taylor playing" he asked. He also blurted on about Watford's
partnership of Dyer and Furlong and how they are destroying teams week
    in and week out.

Thanks for the warning mate but I was confident of three points. After
all Albion had thrashed Watford 4-1 at the Hawthorns earlier on in the
season. Mind you the away form is very dodgy. One win just isn't good
    enough!!!

I had enough of waiting outside the ground so I decided to walk to the
away fans entrance. And what a walk it is!!! Instead of making it
convinent for away fans they make you walk around some allotments.
    Totally pointless excerise...

Anyway, onto the away terrace and I decided to take a leak. Away loos
weren't too bad. A little small but acceptable at the same time. Then
a visit to the refreshment bar. Sausage roll and chips were brought.
Not too badly priced as well if I remember right.

Decided to go on the right of the away end. For those who don't know
Watford's ground, the away is split into two. Right side being the
    loudest.

The pre-match singing was good. Better news was that Andy Hunt is
back. He was only a sub but that was okay. With the Wolves match two
weeks away....a lot of the chanting was geared towards that. Great...

As the game kicked off, Watford looked quite dangerous. Though they
never really had an effort on target. They're a dirty bunch of gits.
Its no surprise that they've had so many players sent off.

Once Albion got going though the class showed. Super Bobby Taylor
turned two players only to fire into the stand and Fenton was proving a
thorn in the Watford's defence side.

After 35 minutes, Albion scored. A free kick by Bradley was headed in
at the far post by Daryl Burgess. No-one knew who scored...No-one
cared. It was 1-0. And the Boing boing songs started.

Half time came and passed. The second will always be remembered for
some of the worst refereeing ever. He was bad and yes i am biased.

Watford came close to scoring once. A quickly taken free-kick was well
    saved.

Still who cares. The Albion won and at the end the scenes were
amazing. It was like the league had been won. And with the news that
Wolves and Birmingham had lost, it was a day to be remembered.

    Re Wolverhampton Wanderers game...

All tickets have been sold. Wolves gave the Albion just over 2,000
tickets despite their promises of 8,000. Tickets went on sale Sunday
morning and fans started to arrive at 11.00pm Saturday night!!! At
5.00am Sunday morning the police had to turn Albion fans away.

I was talking to an Albion fan at Watford and he was saying that a lot
of West Brom fans have tickets for the Wolves end. This will be
trouble for the police. I don't have a ticket but I might try my luck
on the day with a ticket tout.

please contact the Mods direct by mail if you are unhappy with them.

They really aren't bad guy's and have a tough enough job trying to keep

without having to justify their every move to all and sundry. I know

I have enjoyed this conf. for many years now and I can tell you that

It was quite interesting that on the way up to the game on Saturday, I
told a Wolves fans the song and he thought it was quite amusing.
"Every club does it" were his comments as he smiled. Though I doubt
some people can hear it on the TV.

Talking to a Wolves fan on the way to Birmingham New Street. Good
bloke he was too. He has a ticket for next week.

Anyway onto the game. West Brom attacked from the start and took a
lovely lead when super work from Taylor on the right saw a great cross
to Fenton who knocked the ball in the net. 1-0.

Andy Hunt should have added to the lead but he shot wide.

Speedie hit the bar with a superb chip for Leicester. He was getting
some stick from the Brummie Road end and on half time a neat flick onto
the bar from Ormondroyd was put in by Roberts to level the score. 1-1.

After the break Albion looked the better side. Taylor should have
scored when through on goal. The Leicester keeper saved with his feet.

Then Leicester had a player sent off for a second bookable offence and
(yes you've guessed it) Leicester went up the other end and scored
through Ormondroyed (the man with 20 ft legs and one of Villa's
greatest players of all time). 1-2.

We had a couple of half chances after that but the game died and that
was that. Another 3 points lost but remember that Birmingham and
Grimsby lost and Peterboro only got a draw.

Okay, now is the time. The biggest local derby in Britain takes place
on Saturday. WOLVERHAMPTON WANDERERS V WEST BROMWICH ALBION.

Big match for both teams. Wolves can still go up and Albion are
    stuggling.

Wolves have given Albion just 2,500 tickets after promising Albion
8,000. Thanks Wolves! So their is about 6,000 West Brom going in the
Wolves end. Everyone is expecting trouble and if the crowd is mixed
then I can see no way of escaping it.

They are showing it live on a big screen at the Hawthorns. This is
all-ticket as well and at 1.00pm the West Brom reserves play Burnley
then at 3.00pm it the WBA Vs Wolves game. Tickets are priced at #5.00

I have my ticket for The Hawthorns but I'm going to Wolverhampton to
see if I can get a ticket for the game.

Wolverhampton Wanderers (1)1 WEST BROMWICH ALBION (2)2
    Keen 19 Taylor 35
                                              Mardon 39

Superb match. The best side won. West Brom were great.

Wolves started the better side though Albion had the fist real shot but
ANDY HUNT (Hunt Hunt Hunt) shot wide. Wolves put the pressure on like
you'd expect and after 19 minutes they got a lucky break. Keen's shot
sneaking past the super Stuart Naylor (there's only one). Albion were
clearly the only side interested in playing football started to get
    back in the game.

On 35 minutes the impresive Bernard McNally knocked the ball into the
path of Bob Taylor who easily slotted away. Superb. The scummers to
our left were silent. What a bunch of....(I won't say what they are).

A fight broke out in one of the stands and a few minutes later a
free-kick was taken and Mardon headed another goal. Amazing. It was a
dream. The Wolves fans who only minutes earlier had been singing 1-0
were put in their places. A bloke from the Albion end ran on the pitch
to celebrate (what a great guy) only to get nicked. Typical
    Wolverhampton policing.

A few minutes later and it could have been 3. Taylor (Super Bobby
Taylor) and McNally ran through the defence only for super Bob to hit
    the side netting.

Into the second half and Albion dominated at the start. Super Bob
Taylor hit a post. Before Wolves put some moves off their own
together. To be fair they attacked the Albion in the second half but
never really looked like scoring. They had a young donkey on by the
name of Mills and he won it for us. He was so greedy. He shot
everytime and they were poor shots.

Stuart Naylor in goal was my man of the match. Brave and superb...

A much needed 3 points then for the Albion. I saw a few fights after
the game but I didn't really hang about in Wolverhampton.

Article from The Express & Star - Midlands Paper

WOLVES FANS BANNED OVER ALBION CLASH
    ------------------------------------

Wolves fans will be banned from WBA's ground next season after the
mayhem at the weekends Molineux clash. Baggies chairman Trevor Summers
branded Wolves' fans "animals", after police were pelted with bricks
and 46 people arrested on Saturday. In one incident the Albion
director Clive Stapleton was almost blinded after being struck by a
    coin.

After Albion's 2-1 victory a mob of 400 Wolves fans blocked Albion
supporters and had to be broken up by mounted police.

Five police officers received cuts and bruises as they were caught
between rival fans. An off-duty St John's Ambulance officer from
Halesowen claimed he was sent flying by Police, while trying to help an
Albion fan knocked out by a brick. Mick Harris claims that police
stood by and watched for 20 minutes (i'll second that) until the Albion
    fans fought back. (Wolves ran).

    ----------------------------------------------

I myself think that Wolverhampton police were terrible. They weren't at
all prepared and they didn't have the bottle to take the Wolves fans
on. Through the game Albion fans were pelted with coins so what do
the police do??? Arrest Albion fans for singing... West Brom fans
    were the best.

West Bromwich Albion take on the mighty Stoke City tomorrow at The
Hawthorns. The game is all-ticket and yes I have my ticket for the
Brummie Road End. As you may be aware The Smethwick end (Away end) has
been knocked down the capacity is down to 21,000. Shame that....Last
season against Stoke (Div 2 game) the crowd was over 29,000. Still
should be a good one. After last weeks win against Wolves the
confidence must be high in the squad.

Looking forward to Palace next weekend. My uncle is even going which

    Mr Edwards,

1-1 wouldn't be too bad a result. Stoke beat Albion three times last
season and once this season. Mark Stein is usually the reason though
he is a cheating little...... I however think that after last weeks
superb performance at Wolves the team will do well tomorrow. 3 points
and an outside chance of the play-offs would be nice.

The "Boing Boing" is poor at home but away its very good and Albion
    Boing all the way through.

What a bad day! The journey their was nothing short of a nightmare. A
Villa fan decided to sit opposite me on the train. He joined at Oxford
and all the way he kept going on about "Man Utd better watch it, we're
gonna do em'". What a thick dipstick.... Villa won't win, I pointed
out and I said i'll be cheering on United. I also offered him
directions to Wembley and for some reason he went a little quiet after
    that.

The game itself was boring. Albion were the better side but it was
always going to be tough against a team with little ambition. They
played five at the back. It was one of those games when you start
planning your journey home after 20 minutes after the 1st half. It was
the sort of game that made you listen to your radio to see how the
    England rugby team were doing.

Albion did hit the bar in the 1st half but it was a bit freaky. I
can't even remember who crossed it but the ball swerved in the wind
    before hitting the bar.

Stoke had the occassional break but they were poor. They'll stay down.
I'll take bets on that. The crowd was also poor. I blame that on the
    match being all-ticket.

Oh well....Palace away next week and the game is NOT all-ticket.
Palace on a bit of a run but Albion have won the last two away games.
Should be a good game. My Prediction is a 1-1 draw.

West Bromwich Albion 0 away support...

Not a great day. Started badly when I dropped the bathroom mirror on
my foot. Another disaster followed. I went out in the back garden and
it was lovely and warm but by the time I had arrived at Palace the
weather was freezing. (I should have listened to my mum who told me to
    wear a coat).

Excited about seeing the game, I made one massive error. That was
going on the terrace. South London clubs are famous for their away
ends. Millwall used to do it and so do Palace. Its called over-charging
and sticking yer behind a floodlight. From then on I knew the day was
going to be a bad one.

Over the PA system we were trated to some prat playing all these old
Palace songs. After every song he mentioned Sussex. Then some stupid
blue bear came round waving to the crowd.

Anyway onto the game and after two minutes Palace scored. A shot saved
by Naylor fell to the path of Stewart and he scored. From that moment
I expected Palace to sweep away with it. They didn't.

The style exactly the same as Wimbledon wasn't causing us many
problems. They even act like Wimbledon. Eric Young punched young
Donovan off the ball after 10 minutes and he should have walked for
that. I was hoping that Donovan would smack him back.

Palace's three songs were heard at this point. Alan Smith's Blue &
Red army, Top of the league and Eagles. Mind you the atmosphere in the
away end wasn't up to much.

Palace seemed happy hoofing the ball whilst Albion played all the neat
football. In the second half West Brom should have had a penalty. I
not sure who was tripped (I didn't even think it was a fell) but it was
in the area and the referee gave a free-kick outside the box.

Two minutes from time Bradley hit the post for Palace and in the last
minute Donovan hit the post with a super header for Albion.

Overall Albion deserved a point. Albion outclassed in the middle of
the field but once again failed to score. Palace are a strong team who
play to their strengths which is the long ball for Armstrong to chase.

Biggest cheer for the Albion fans was Paul Marden (We're not worthy)
superbly chopping Paul "Sumo" Stewart down.

Well done to Palace. They should get promotion but I reckon they need
to buy a couple of players to stay their.

I can't believe that I missed this game. I'm really gutted but I'm
just glad to see 3 points towards the promotion campaign. My mum and
dad went out for a meal last night so most of the evening was spent on
the old clubcall. I'm glad I don't pay the phone bill.

What can I tell you all. Well let me start by saying its the first
time we've scored 3 goals in a match since Southend away back in
December. Its the first time i've missed a match since February 1st.

The commentator said Albion were superb. Attack after attack. Super
Bob missed a couple of chances early but right on half-time he tucked
home a shot from close range... 1-0.

A great move between Hunt and Super Bob saw Hunt cross the ball for
Super Bob to superbly header past the stranded and fat Steve Cherry.

A minute later Hunt had a shot superbly saved from Cherry. Hunt scored
the third but a great win.

/GAry,

Ah, parting is such sweet sorrow. How will I now face Monday mornings without
the thought of your cheery yet delicately sarky comments about Villa's latest
setback to stir me from my slumber? I will watch the results each Saturday
afternoon and weep for those times past when I could even then begin to prepare
myself for your sophisticated humour.

But anyway, claptrap aside, good luck for the future and I hope you find more
and better employment very soon.

All the best,

I was `lucky' enough to see Gary in town today and he's vvery upset. He
is taking the death of Kurt Cobain (Nirvana singer who blew his own
head off at the weekend) very badly. He has dedicated one of his
bedroom walls in memory of Kurt.

In addition, he has renamed todays pilgrimage to Oxford. It is no

    Hey Tony,

If you haven't got any constructive to say about Gary's team then just
stay out of his note, OK !!!

It's a well known fact that Norwich are one of those boring teams that
just try to stifle their opponent's creativity. This is obviously what
happened in the game to which you're referring (although I have to
confess that I haven't the faintest idea what prompted your reply !).

Everyone knows that Ron Atkinson didn't leave WBA cos he got a better

because he couldn't cope with the pressure of having such dedicated
fans. He felt that the "Fair weather Fans" at Villa would be much
easier to live with. Let's face it, nobody really cares how Villa do,

A couple of good chances were squandered before West Brom took the lead

reserves who have not got what it takes at the moment. Saying that, there

has been a big drop in form and excuses count for nothing.

I still expect them to finish in mid table.

    Also, re:

    >>>Who gives a sh*t - They broke our keepers arm for christs sake !!!!

I thought giving 'southern softies' a good kicking was all part of the

    game !

West Brom crashed to their record equalling 9th straight defeat last

    weekend, losing 4-1 at Huddersfield.

Crystal Palace have their chance of 3 points this Saturday.

As usual the 4 games over the Christmas period are crucial, if they

lose all of them then they will definitely be in the relegation zone and

what promised to be a good season will become another disappointment.

At the top of the table Millwall have dropped dramatically as have

Tranmere, while Derby and Sunderland have become the in form teams, I expect

these two as well as Norwich and Leicester to be the teams fighting for the

2 automatic places at the end of the season.

Well, as tomorrow's my last day here I was hoping to say that WBA have

actually gained a point over Xmas. but 1 defeat (2-3 v Crystal Palace) and

2 postponed put paid to that. We could actually be making a challenge for

the longest run of successive league defeats which apparently is 17 by

    Walsall in the 1880's !!

You don't have to be a brain surgeon to fancy Crewe's chances v WBA on

    Saturday in the Cup.

Anyway, best wishes to everyone in this notes file.

    Richard.

Good news for the WBA fans. According to Ian Rutherford, Roberto Carlos
is going to sign for the Albion.

Akchewully WBA have signed someone. Mr Spink has ended a 19 year career
at Villa Park to join them !!! Mad or what. Perhaps Ians oh so accurate
news had been heard by Mr Spink and convinced him of the worth of
giving up a testimonial to play in the SECOND division instead!!
