I asked the moderator to enter this topic, in the hope that someone down
Tees-side way could keep me up to date on the Boro's new siginings,
Chris Morris & Derek Whyte ?
If there aren't any Boro fans working at DEC, then any English fan with
a knowledge of Premier League football may help ?
In anticipation

There are at least 2 Boro fans in Dec one is a season ticket holder so
I'll alert him to your enquiries. But for obvious reasons (crap team &
being stuffed out of sight by Newcastle pre season) he is keeping a low
profile usually camping out in other conferences..

Well there are to my knowledge 4 Middlesbrough season ticket holders
working for DEC ( more than Newcastle ! ) .
There used to be a Middlesbrough notes conference on the old node but
since there wasn't any long distance fan ( As they are usually the ones
who yearn for information ) I didn't bother opening a new one .
It's much more fun dipping into other teams topics , and not having
people getting into yours ( and slagging you off !!! ) .
However ......
Derek Whyte and Chris Morris were signed from Celtic 2 days before the
season started . Chris Morris was a direct swap for Andy Payton and
Derek Whyte was an outright buy .
It's early day's yet but in the 2 games I have seen them in I am preety
satisfied in their performances . Morris looks solid and professional
and Whyte looks like striking up a good partnership with Alan Kernaghan
. Although one blemish against Whyte was a mistake against Leeds
letting Cantona for there only goal last Saturday .
Boro now have 5 sweaty socks in their team , Hendry , Falconer , Wright
, Whyte and Slaven . Chris Morris is English ( though he plays for the
Republic of Ireland ) .
As for Andy Payton , well he didn't really get a good run out for the
Boro . He hit a lot of bad luck with injuries and should have been kept
for maybe at least another 6 months . As he has alot of pace and skill
.
Boro don't have a game in mid week and they play at Southampton on
Saturday .

Note 261.0 Help with 'Boro fixtures in November No replies
ICS::KETT 16 lines 23-SEP-1992 16:54
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Mu family and I will be making a quick weeks visit back to the UK in
November to see grandma, and I've promised my 9 year old, who's
football mad (I've watched England lose to W. Germany in the '90 World
Cup at least 15 times now on the VCR, and each time I keep hoping the
result will come out different. Wanna know how many times I've seen
Mark Wright collide with Rodger Mila?) that we can go to a Middlesboro
game, if they're at home. Can anyone tell me where, and who, the 'Boro
are playing on Saturday, November 21st? Does the 'Boro have any evening
league games scheduled at home the following week? (Nov. 23rd - Nov
27th)
Thanks in advance,
Alan

Middlesboro F.C. strip)

Now that I've moved it, I'll answer your question.
Unfortunately there will be no football at Ayresome Park on November
21st as Wimbledon are the visitors. You'd want to be really desperate
to see Boro if you go to that one.
There are no midweek games planned for the following week. Maybe Boro
will have a game in the ZDS.

| Now that I've found the note, I'll sign up as the long distance fan
that Bill refered to a few back as the justification for having a 'Boro
note. I read the Boston Globe every Sunday morning to see how the 'Boro
has done the day before, but I do miss the coverage in the Evening
Gazette!
I live in Hopkinton, MA, but am from Stockton. Used to pay my 1/-
(that's 5p to you post-1971 lot) to get in the Boys End (is it still
there?) and watch Cloughie torment the visiting fans when he put one in
the net. One of the saddest days of my boyhood was the day he blew his
knee out, even though he was playing for Sunderland at the time.
I'd appreciate it if Bill could flesh out the scores with a sentence or
two about how the game went.
re -.2. Will I be able to buy seating tickets the day of the game at
the ground?

HI Alan ,
and welcome to the Middlesbrough notes conference .
It's good to see at long last a " remote " BORO fan .
I'll be glad to enter a bit more info about the furure BORO
matches .
As you will already know BORO are playing at home to Wimbledon
on the 21st November and of course I will be there . There are
3 seating areas at Middlesbrough and for two of them you need to
be a member . The other one is behind the goal at the east end of
the ground .
I also come from Stockton , but I live up in Geordieland now
surrounded by fans from some of the lower clubs in the region
( Newcastle and Sunderland ) .
I have a season ticket for the Holgate ( west end ) and go to
maybe half a dozen away games a season as well . I was at Newcastle
on Wednesday night for the first leg of the Coca-Cola cup where
we drew 0-0 .
Let me know if you need tickets ,
cheers ,
Bill .

Well I think I might have seen the potential Premier league champions
on Saturday . Villa look a well balanced side with a nice touch of
flair .
Boro were without the inflential Falconer in midfield and the runs
of Hendrie , as both were injured with calf injuries .
Villa were a class above BORO in the first half , with a Saunders
goal not a true reflection of their superiority . Though the BORO
were a different team in the second half and after Slaven equalised
It looked as though BORO were more likely to take the 3 points .
But then 2 goals in 3 minutes crushed BORO's comeback . A final fling
raised BORO's hopes once again when McGrath scored an own goal , but
in the end it was only a consolation .

Boro improved on last week but were without Alan Kernaghan who injured
himself in the warm-up prior to the kick-off . Apparantly he went up to
head a ball and he had a twinge/spasm in his neck . He was def. missed
as his replacement ( John Gittens ) gave a needless penalty away as
Utd. took a first half lead. Bernie Slaven ( who was man of the match )
equalised in the second half , and a draw was a fair result . However
UTD. had the chance to take 3 points if Mark Hughes had not worn the
wrong boots on the wrong feet . Utd. are very good on the break but
lacked a finisher of the class of Saunders of villa last week .
Boro dropped to 9th in the league , and their next match is against
Newcastle on Wednesday night in the Coca-Cola cup .

I knew it was going to be a bad night when all the pubs were shut near
the ground . The police decided to shut them for fear of reprisals from
the Newcastle fans after some Boro morons had wrecked a pub in
Newcastle in the first leg .
Anyway it didn't improve in the ground either . Newcastle were far the
better team in the first half and we were fortunate to be only one down
. The second half was a slight improvement and after Wilkinson had
equalised with a bullit header we started to take control for the next
20 mins. However with Newcastle scoring an away goal we had to score
again and pushed forward. O'brien scored a brilliant goal in the 79 min
and 9 mins. later Kelly scored his second .
Can't really complain as Newcastle deserved to go into the next round
though Kevin Keegan looked a bit of a plank after his comment on the
television after the first leg match . He was implying that Boro didn't
sell their full allocation of tickets at St. James Park and said "
There will be one difference between tonight and at Ayresome Park and
that is we will sell our full allocation " . His face must have been as
red as the 300 empty red seats in the East stand .

I missed the Wimbledon game through work commitments but I saw
the goals on TV . To make up for it I decided to got to Oldham
good day out but we were really bad .
Went to the Blackburn game on Saturday , it was like watching
a totally different team from the week before . Hendrie again
was in outstanding form and scored 3 goals . It was the first
time Blackburn had been beaten on their travels this season .
Mohan was recalled to replace Gittens and the partnership
with Whyte looked really solid . Fleming marked BORO old
boy Ripley out of the game , and Ripley was eventually subbed
in the 70th minute .
Boro are playing on this Friday night instead of Saturday so
that Sky can televise the game live on satellite . This will
be a prequel for the FA cup tie on 2nd January ay Ayresome Park .
It was also announced that BORO's game at Aston Villa will be

We could do with his goals at the moment , as we are struggling

Subject: They played for BORO

Organization: Computing Services, University of Warwick, UK
Forenote: Any references to charachters and events, real or fictional
in this article are completely coincidental.
They played for Middlesbrough.
Jesus Christ first played for Boro during their tour of the middle east
in the year 17 A.D. He was said to be the son of a boss of an extremely
large and powerful company, but was adopted by a poor couple and was
born in a barn just 200 yards from the ground of Bethlehem Rovers,
his first club.
At that time the manager of great rivals Roman Villa hatched an evil
plot to destroy Bethlehems world famous youth policy by slaughtering
all the new born baby boys in the city. Fortunately 'Jezza' managed to
avoid this mass slaughter and went on to become a key figure in
"The Beth's" league and cup winning side of AD16.
Shortly after Jesus was born it was claimed in the local paper, The
Bethlehem Bible, that the floodlights of the football ground lit up of
their own accord and that famous managers and coaches came from all
over the globe to see this child. Three wise scouts visited and told
his parents that he would make a fine man manager one day. In order
to help him they gave him gifts of goals, frankness and mirth.
As Christ grew older he discovered that his best position was in goal
and it was there that he was first spotted by Borowhilst playing against
us in a pre-season tour of Isreal. We snapped up the promising keeper
for a few loaves and fishes, there were no agents to push up transfer
fees in those days.
When Jezza first came to England he was hero-worshipped by many who
were impressed by his commanding presence of the goal area. His father
was extremely proud of his footballing son and was able to watch every
game he played, due to the fact that he was omnipotent.
Jesus himself remained modest about his achievements and unhurt by
any criticism he recieved. He was able to perform miracle saves at will,
It wasn't long before hoardes of travelling Boro supporters sewed
"Jesus saves" on their Union Jack and displayed them at grounds
all over the country. You may still be able to see the phrase outside
churches even now!
Christs greatest strength was his ability on crosses, and his long goal
kicks brought Boro back from the dead on more than one occasion.
However the fans became fickle in those days and when it was put to a
vote at the end of one season it was decided that Bar Abbas (Bazza)
should be Boros custodian and not Jesus. Christ was gutted by the
decision and claimed that even his father had forsaken him.
Jesus then took a step up in the world and joined his father at
Heaven F.C and played against Hell in the Eternal Premier League
every Satda afternoon. And so he left the Boro to the cries of
"Going Up, Going Up". He has never returned to Middlesbrough
despite promising that he would be back......one day. Amen.

would put us on the periphery of the play-offs .
I don't think we will get to the play-offs though , we're just
not good enough I'm afraid .
Anyway if the BORO go up , DATATAB ( one of out VAR's ) won't
be sponsoring 6 matches next season . DATATAB are just interested
in N.E. tv converage , and if BORO get promoted they will get
national coverage .
Anyway I'm 'paying' for tonights game ,

Southend.
How are things in the offices at Ayresome? ANy signs of a white knight
with lots of money? Any mutterings about the current management? I'm
going to have to ask my mam to sent me some clippings from the Gazette.
Regards,
Alan
p.s. are the Toonies in the office unbearable? We get a 1hr show on
cable over here that's got highlights from the Premiere game of the
week, plus all the goals from the Premiere that week. The games are
only about 4-5 out of date when I see them, and I saw N'castle vs
Sheffield Wednesday last week. I love Cole/Beardsley and the whole team
is fun to watch. The question each week seems to be whether the Dynamic
Duo up front can score enough to keep the team in front to the end,
given the silly ones a rather shakey defence is letting in at the back.

excited about your prospects. He's untried in management, apart from a
bit of coaching in the England camp, and I always thought that he was

only when he was out of the side for most of the season that they won
the championship!

The problem with any sort of bait is that it will only tempt a specific

Bryan Robson yesterday broke Middlesbrough's transfer record to
land Neil Cox , Aston Villa's England under-21 international
defender . He is expected to have cost the Boro 1 million pounds .
Cox signed a 3 year contract and is expected to play at right back.
So with Blackmore at left back Cox at right back and Boro still
looking at central defenders , it looks like Robson will be totally
decimating the back four .
Robson has said he will be buying 2 or 3 quality players .
Boro will seek entry into the anglo-italian cup next season .
So with only 8 English teams entered , Boro will play Italian
opposition in the first game .

| I'm rather surprised to find the BORO represented in Notes. I'll
chuck-in my twopence worth and no doubt start a string of replies.
So we're getting a new ground at last - anyone see the Gazette last
weekend? For those that didn't, there's a front page splash about some
Scrap car dealer located on the very ground of our proposed new home.
There's a cracking colour picture of the 3 owners, complete with more
indian ink than flesh, looking like bouncers out of the Bongo Club. They
don't look like moving in a hurry!
Now I love the Boro, spent more money watching them than I have at
Parlie Road Fish and Chip Shop (The worlds best), but when it comes to
listening to the plans of our beloved Board of Directors....
Can anyone out there remember the old Newport Working Mens Club?
For those who can't let me explain.
There was once this little dive of a place that stood in the way of a
new road development. Nobody ever went there except the terminally
sick (of work) the lame (of the bad back variety) and the lazy (Bernie
Slaven?). I can't remember how many years they stuck it out but it was
quite a few. They ended up with a new club which at the time cost about
the same as it would to pay Bernie's wages for 25 years.
The point I'm trying to make is, we've all been had in the past and
until the first (maybe last?) bricks are laid, I for one will not be
rushing to buy a season ticket.
Have you ever wondered why the BORO went down from the Premier? Cos
Henderson and co were worried to death about having to seat the
Holgate! Where has all the dosh gone over the years? How many star
players were sold for big bucks - Mills, Johnston, Souness, Armstrong
et al. Where did the ICI sponsorship lolly go? How much did Charlie
Amer do for the club? I could go on and on.
Are we to forget?
I wish Robbo all the best but he will need to be as headstrong as Keegan
was/is to get his own way, the problem is what is Brian Robsons' connection
with Teesside. - ICI put a plane on for him everyday!!!!!

The 2-0 win over Burnley was "comfortable" . There is still a lot of
room for improvement .
Moreno did not play . Middlesbrough are having difficulty in getting
him a work permit . The PFA are putting restrictions on importing
players into the league . Foreign players have to meet certain
criteria , and one of them is that they have to have played in 75%
of international matches in the last 2 years . Moreno made this ok
, but now the PFA arn't including friendly matches !! even though
the player still gets a full cap . Moreno has played in only 27%
of full competitive matches , due to injury rather than not been
good enough . So we await the final verdict from the Dept. of
Employment .
Leeds Utd. signed 2 players from S. Africa who hadn't met the 75%
criteria , however it's very political , we don't want to upset
the South Africans at the mo .
At the same time the PFA are trying to stamp out racism . So by
banning foreign players , they are being hypocritical .
Anyway the Boro as you might know won 2-0 away at Southend at the
week-end , and are now 2 points clear at the top of the first division
. Hendrie scored both goals as well as the 2 from last week .
The team for both matches was :-

Blackmore Robson Pollock Moore
Hendrie Wilkinson

Lineker is certainly not over the hill from an age point of view .
He is 4 years younger than Robson . The trouble is he has had a

The question is why Robson has leaked the possible signing to
the media so early . There are two possible answers , either
Lineker has agreed to come to the Boro or it is a P.R. stunt .

I spoke to Bryan yesterday and he said they definately have

He said he has agreed terms with the club on signing Futre

Other names he is def. going for will be Lee Clarke ,
Mark Wright ,
And the big news after the cup final will be the signing
of a very big name from Man Utd. , but he would not divulge
who it was . However he did say it def. was not McClair .

who will then go to court etc.etc....

Middlesbrough are poised to throw English football into chaos by taking the
Premier League back to court over the points deduction which cost them their
place in the elite yesterday.
Chairman Steve Gibson sparked the prospect of a battle this summer when he
claimed Boro had lost their place because of a decision by 'grey men in grey
suits behind closed doors'.
Despite drawing 1-1 at Leeds yesterday, Boro were relegated by two points when
Coventry kept their top-flight status on the final day of the season with a 2-1
win at Tottenham. Sunderland were also relegated after their 1-0 defeat at
Wimbledon.
Boro were docked three points when they failed to turn up at Blackburn on
December 21, claiming 23 of their players were either injured or ill. They
employed George Carman QC in their attempt to have the penalty overturned but
the League stood firm.
Now Boro are destined to return to Carman again, although Gibson would not say
so in so many words. He said last night: 'That's for me to decide at the right
time. But we've been relegated today not because of what happened on the pitch
but by these grey men.'
The Premier League believes the matter should be allowed to rest and spokesman
Mike Lee said: 'The original decision was taken following full consideration of
all the facts and was based on clear provisions in the rule book. That decision
has since been upheld by an independent appeal board.'
Even so, Gibson is in a situation where he feels he has nothing to lose, not
with relegation anticipated to be costing the club at least 20million.
There was further controversy last night when Manchester United manager Alex
Ferguson entered the furore surrounding Coventry City's remarkable escape at
Tottenham.
Ferguson described the 15-minute, traffic-jams delay to the kick-off at White
Hart Lane which prevented a synchronised finish to the season as 'absolutely
scandalous'.
Despite seeing his team officially crowned champions after their 2-0 victory
over West Ham, Ferguson said: 'Premier League? It's more like a tiddlywinks
league. Whatever happened to delay the kick-off at White Hart Lane, that
decision should have been passed on to the other clubs involved in relegation
battles
