159.0. "Football at Digital" by GOTA1::APPELQVIST (Your man on the Northern front) Wed Feb 19 1992 12:56

Now that spring is coming up here in the north, the football season comes
closer every day. Digital in Gothenburg participates in a corporate league
witch starts late in April. We also have a big Cup coming up in May.

What about corporate football in your countries? What form of football? Any
sucesses? We play Seven-a-side with no offside, and last year we actually
won our league ahead of three different Volvo-teams.

Once there were Six-a-side in Geneve, anyone knows if it's ever going to be
played again? Are there any other international tournaments?

159.1DEC-Nordic CupGOTA1::APPELQVISTYour man on the Northern frontWed Feb 19 1992 12:5728
DEC-Nordic cup is a tournament played every year in May. It started 1986 in
Copenhagen, and it's going to be played in Oslo this year for the sixth time.
The participant teams comes from Finland, Denmark, Norway and Sweden, and it's
open for both Ladies and Gentlements. It's a very fun tournament with great
weather and not so serious kind of football. Around 20 male teams and six
female teams starts play on a saturday morning with finals in the afternoon.
In the evening there is a great dinner-party when you get to know footballers
from the other Nordic countries.

Over the years, Denmark, Norway and Stockholm had the most of the victories,
but in Gothenburg we wait patiently for our chance. The tournament winners so
far is;

				Laides Gentlemen

1986 in Copenhagen Denmark Denmark
1987 in Gotheburg Stockholm	Denmark
1988 in Oslo Denmark Denmark
1989 in Helsinki Norway Stockholm
1990 in Copenhagen Stockholm	Norway
1991 in Stockholm Stockholm	Norway

This is also a Seven-a-side tournament, played 2x15 minutes. You meet many
tired players during the evening, but everyone aggrees that it's not the
competition that counts, it's the participation!!

The world-famous Dec six-a-side annual Geneva stomp is alas no more.
Dont know why they (EHQ) scrapped it, probably because we were having
    too much fun!

159.3DEC eastern-central Mass. area soccerESOA12::PILATONWed Feb 19 1992 15:059
Here in eastern-central Mass. we play both 7-a-side outdoor (10-12
teams) and 6-a-side indoor (10 teams). The 7-a-side outdoor we divide
a regular size field in two, and have two game at the same time.
The goal area is 6'x8' and everything else to its proportion.

The 6-a-side indoor, the gaol area, I believe, is the same as outdoor.
Board all around approx. 3 1/2' high, and netting all around the rest.

Teams are from all around DEC site.
159.4More on Mass. DEC league SALES::THILLWed Feb 19 1992 19:0213
Hi Nick! Great game last night (our teams drew 8-8)

The league here is both good fun and a reasonably decent caliber of play, if
you can imagine both at the same time. A few players play in the semi-pro LASA
(Portugese-American) league, and there are also corporate teams that play other
companies. One new rule in the indoor league this year is that each team has to
have at least one female player. In the past it has been a co-ed league in name
only - most of the women played on a seperate womens' corporate team.

The summer league has more teams and 2 divisions. There is an all day tournament
at the end of September for all the teams.

We have a team here at Queensferry entered in a Five-a-side league,
just outside Edinburgh. There is a total of eight leagues altogether,
each consisting of eight teams. The SQF team has battled hard over the
last few seasons :-) and is currently sitting third top of the second
division. The last game of the current league campaign is this coming
Saturday. The top two teams are both two points ahead of us, and with
three points for a win we need to win on Saturday with one of those
above us needing to at least draw so we get promotion to the top
    league.

Each team has a 'squad' of ten players to pick from and can play seven
each week, with any amount of substitions allowed. During the many
seasons we have been playing however, it has been very difficlut to get
even five players to turn up for us. It can be a bit of a struggle
trying to turn in your best performance (oooerr) at 10:30 on a Saturday
morning after a rather 'hectic' Friday (one or two of our players have
been know to 'speak to hughie' seconds before kick-off) but it's all
    part of the fun...(?).

If anyone is interested I'll let you know next week if we obtained
promotion or not.. which if we do I'll be extra pleased 'cos you also
get a nice wee cash prize to go with it......mmmmm

    Tommy.

Regarding -1 Of course we're interested! I believe I can speak for
both myself and Tom (Hill that is). Anyone playing football (in or out)
past the age of thirtyiiissshhhh! is out of their mind! Ha! but that's
the best part of it, fun, fun fun..... and I love it all.

Regarding -2 Yea Tom, great game. You knocked Tim out of the game...
he thought he had a hard head..... but yours was harder. Great battle.
Hopefully we'll meet again in playoffs.

    Ciao - Nick

We used to have a tournament between UK and Ireland teams. The venue
alternated between Reading, Dublin, Galway and Ayr. It was scrapped
    last year for some reason.

Teams entered from Reading, Ayr, Queensferry, Dublin, Clonmel, Galway
and it was played over the Easter weekend. It was the real game - you
know eleven a side, offside and all that and I can assure you
competition was fierce. The usual Scotland v England rules applied
    when Reading met Ayr.

The main part of the weekend was the social side - great weekends which
    are very much missed.

Last year, september to be precisly, I tryed to get a tournament of the ground
that would be played in Holland and after that every year in another country.
Well the tournament went trough but there were only three teams, one Dutch and
two English (both from good ol' Basingsmoke). It seemed inpossible to get teams
from other countries, I phoned with Denmark, Germany, Belgium, France (Every,
Ferney and Valbonne), Scotland (Ayr) and Ireland, everybody was positive (except
the French and the Scottisch, I'm still waiting for them to phone me back!)
until they heard that they had to pay for it, after that every team had only
3 to 4 players left. It's the same here in Holland, I wanted to organise a trip
to Galway and play Gary and his mates but after asking everyone there was only
one guy left ie ME!

Let's face it as long as DEC isn't sponsering this kind of thing it will never
get off the ground.

T_

BTW my team never received any benefits from DEC, awell that's not completely
correct 'cause they supplied us with kits twice (old stuff that we had to return
)!

    Neil, (-.1)

I'd love to Referee. But, .... I'll assume "Reading" is as in
England, NOT Massachusetts, nor Pennsylvania! For the right $$$, I
could ... (No, on second thought, your Labour Ministry might not let
an American have a work permit to referee! Think of the scandal.)

    			Jeff

P.S. We had a great time when some folks from Canada came down for a
friendly match against a Digital pick-up team from the greater Maynard
area. Perhaps you'll do the same? If you do, you can count on me to
ref. (I'll even brush up on my Olde English)

September 1991 there was this little tournament in Holland between the
English sides Basing Albions (Basingstoke) and Viables (also BAsingstoke)
and the great Citta del Duomo from Utrecht Holland.

The last game of the tournament was Viables against Citta and this game
ended in a bashing after some defenders from Viables imagened that they
were at a karate match, some people who were off the pitch got on it (thank
you) and there the bashing was.

It was all cleared in the evening after the match and the next day but it
almost was the end of footy here 'cause nobody wanted to play anymore for
a long time.

We are now hoping to get a team together to travel to Basingstoke somewhere
in April and play our old friends and rivals Basing Albion.

Ah yes I remember.. Tut tut tut.

You can belive me when I say that the culprit/s are now safely back in
COMMS and VMS where they shall stay locked up forever. I have agreed
only to release them for home games.

Watty - If I am correct it was your buxom brunette defender who
disclocated our mans shoulder. She was a real rough'un - where did
you dig her up from. Then again she had more balls than the rest of
    your mamby pambys put together.

Gary,

Rod and Billy are ok but it's quite dangerous to play against them.

In Utrecht I didn't look at my best either :-)

Remember some wise ass asking you to give an opinion on wether a
paticular glass of Dutch lager was off, well let me remind you.

One Ton Jansen sat at a table in company minding his own business.
Up comes a wise ass and says "Ton, smell this lager it smells as
though its off". Ton dips his head to move his nose to the brim of the
glass containing half a pint of very frothy Dutch lager. At this point
the wise ass blows as hard as he could on the froth causing it to
splatter all over Ton's face giving him the look of a man about to have
    a shave..

I must admit Ton you took it very well as everyone else fell off their
    bar stools laughing..
