The quarter-finals for Barcelona 1992 were drawn in December. Here are
the matches.
Holland - Sweden
Germany - Scotland
Denmark - Poland
Czechoslovakia - Italy
It's a two legged affair, the winners qualify for the Olympics in
Barcelona. Is's also a under-21 Euro copetition, and the winner of
Holland/Sweden meets the winner of Germany/Scotland in the semi.
The first leg for Sweden is in Utrecht on the 11 march 1992, the second
leg in Sweden two weeks later. It's a bit confusing, Scotland qualify
for the Olympics. Shouldn't it be Great Britain?

Mats,
If I've got it right Germany is already qualified for Barcelona 92.
This might be due to the fact that Scotland won't be represented as
an own country since there will be a Great Britain team.

| According to CEEFAX Scotland scored 1st in about the 25th minute, with the
Germans equalizing 7 minutes later.
From then on it was nearly all Germany, with a constant bombardment on the
Scottish goal, but the keeper earning his keep, and getting the MoM award.
(Greavsie would turn in his grave, if he were dead of course :-) )
A great result for the Scots, let's hope they can do the business at home.
When's the return leg??

Sweden plays Holland in Utrecht tonight, kickoff 19.30. The Swedish
team contains only domestic players, so it will be a tough game. The
game is live on TV4, a scaninavian channel on the Tele-X satellite.
Keep an eye on Jonas Axeldahl, a striker from Malm FF. He has scored
some goals in the last U-21 games.
A 1-1 draw suits me perfect.

Holland - Sweden
2 1
23' Rob Roest 25' Christer Fursth
53' Gaston Taument
The game started in a low tempo with both teams trying to get a grip on each
other. With Holland playing very offensively 3-4-3 and Sweden playing 4-4-2,
Holland begun to dominate the game, but didn't get any hot chances. after 23
minutes, Max Huiberts played a good ball to Gaston Taument who was knocked down
from behind by Joakim Bjrklund, and the Welch referee pointed at the penalty
spot. Rob Roest took the penalty well and put the ball in the left corner.
Two minutes later, Christer Fursth finally got rid of his defender Ulrich
van Gobbel and scored from a beautiful pass from Jesper Jansson. After 30
minutes, Jonas Axeldahl shot from close range and Johnny Rdlund nearly put
the rebound in the net. Five minutes from half-time, Taument had shot in the
bar.
The second half was not so good as the first. Three mistakes from the Swedish
defense left Taument alone with Jan Ekholm in the Swedish goal, and the dutch
striker finished perfectly. Holland dominated the second half, but failed to
score.
Holland didn't play that well but, deserved to win. You could clearly see that
the Swedish team just has begun their season. Fursth and van Gobbel had a hard
fight during the whole game, but there was a friendly atmosphere over it.
Taumnet was Man of the Match in my opinion, i won't be surprised if he is in the
dutch team this summer. Fursth had a good game, so had Jesper Jansson. Magnus
Johansson was a disaster on the right defense, many of Hollands chanses came
from the left wing. Jonas Axeldahl was a dissapointment, and he was substituded
early in the second half.
Second leg is in Vxj on the 25;th this month. We will have Thomas Brolin from
Parma in the team then. Another good promising striker is Pascal Simson from
AIK. Hes injured right now, but perhaps he can play in the second leg. The
Swedish coach Nisse Andersson was pleased with the result, a 1-0 win at home
will takes us to Barcelona, he said.

Not that I want to, but in defence of the S.F.A. I believe they
actually offered the rights to game to the T.V. companies for 20,000
but there were no takers. I think BSkyB had cameras there and will show
highlights at some point.

Sweden - Holland
1 0
75' Pascal Simson
This was not a very good game. Sweden played a little better than 14
days ago, and Holland play far too defensivly. One of the great
difference in the Swedish team was Thomas Brolin, who lifted up the
whole midfield.
Pascal Simson has been injured during the winter and he came in as a
substitute after 70 minutes. The goal was a beauty. Simson won a battle
in the air in the mid circle, ran down to the penalty area, headed the
ball to Brolin who dribbled two defenders and passed the ball to Simson
who putted it in the net.
Concidering the fact that Holland is in mid-season, and that the Swedish
season hasnt started yet, the Swedish team made a marvelous perfomance
in theese two legs. Now it only can get better.

A well deserved championship title for Italy. They controlled most of
the game last night, and Sweden wasn't near an equalizing goal. I must
say that Sweden have made a marvelous performance reaching the final
with mostly amateur players. Surely a good reserve capital for the
future.
