149.0. "The Danny Baker Show" by ARRODS::OHAGANB (Jesus, Mary, Mungo and Midge) Wed Jan 15 1992 15:13

A note dedicated to God's own Cockney, Danny Baker, who as some
of you will know hosts the rather excellent Radio 5 Football
phone-in show on a Saturday evenings. I've only been listening
to the show for about month now but it's got me hooked.

As well as talking about the day's games our Dan holds court with
his usual rapier-like wit and invites callers to continue on themes
as absurd as Football Clubs as Celebrities: Who would they be?
The remark about Millwall being like Ken Goodwin....in his current
state was a killer. I forget who Tottenham were likened to but it
    was'nt very flattering.

The footballer profiles is still going strong. The one about David
Howells liking a "fish dinner" (or similar) under the favourite
meal question was brilliant. Liar! Everybody knows that all
footballers eat steak and chips! And as for "the occasional lager,"
that one sent me reeling. :^)

The show does'nt lend itself to over-reverance and sycophancy and
Baker certainly is no referee's friend as last week's "Saint n
Greavsie" testified to. To say that all refs are bent was taking things
a bit too far, but at the same time it's encouraging to see someone
bold enough to attack those football issues which really are'nt given
any media coverage other than a half-commited stab at a ref by Jimmy
Hill or Greaves, or in the restricted market of the fanzine for such
issues as the Bond schemes and the mostly useless Taylor Report.

    Barry.

A recent Danny Baker quote on the great George Best

" Today's players aren't even good enough to lace his
booze"

Anyone who caught the Mirror's sports-pages yesterday will have read
Millwall chairman Reg Burr's attack on Baker for his outbirsts against
current manager Bruce Rioch. Must admit, although I agree with Baker's
view that everyone is fair game in terms of criticism, he's definitely
been taking this Rioch thing a bit far recently. Quote,

"When Rioch came to Millwall we were depressed and miserable. He's done
a marvellous job by turning it all round - now we are all miserable and
    depressed."

Shades of Tommy Docherty there. Baker went on,

"If he was a decent man he would have gone by now....His team are an
embarrassment. They are a load of inept, gutless, journeymen - they
    are grey."

Bruce Rioch is upset. Danny Baker unrepentent, Reg Burr is seeking
legal advice and an apology from BBC Radio 5. Stay tuned.

    Barry.

I also listen to the Danny Baker Show. I enjoy it a lot. The good thing
is getting the opinions of people that have been to games that very
afternoon. There have been occaisions recently where where people have
rung in to pass a comment on the game I've been to Luton's. This has
sometimes come as a great suprise as I thought I was the only one
there. However it is quite apparent that the way a game is viewed is
very much dependant upon which team the person supports. I'll be honest
i go along to see Luton for the social angle I meet up with my old
school mates and will be the first to say that Luton did early in the
season play crap. But i sometimes wonder if these people only watch
half a game, thats when their team have the ball.

Also I wish Danny Baker would remember that he is after all only the
presenter and the vehicle which supporters use to get their views over.
I get annoyed with him sometimes if a caller is trying to make a point
which he disagrees with, they've got no chance.

Shut up Danny and let others put their views over.

    Barry.

Danny also has a show on Radio 5 at 12:30 on a Saturday afternoon.
He has quizzes and alsorts and generally takes the mick out of anyone
who rings in. He has also started a breakfast show with John Inverdale
on Rad 5, in the morning, don't know the times, but hes on around 6:30ish.

Saturday's show was brilliant, especially Baker's rant aimed
at a Tottenham director/official. I only hope some of the Spurs
board were listening in along with officials at QPR and Leeds who
also earned well deserved slabs of adverse publicity.

    Well done that man.
