| Nigeria ended up winning that game 2-1, although I didn't see it.
I did see a tiny bit of the Cameroon game and the one interesting bit was Morocco
being awarded an indirect free-kick from 5 yards. The Cameroon wall (11 players)
were about three yards from the ball and were refusing to move. The ref wanted
them all on the goal line but they wouldnt move. Eventually he booked one player
and Morocco took their free. All the Cameroon players rushed him before he kicked
the ball and were about one foot from the ball when the kick was taken. Needless
to say, no goal. THe ref didnt order the kick to be retyaken, which I found
strange.
What was interesting was the reason this free kick was awarded in the first
place. A cross came over which was easy for the goalie so he tried to catch it
and fumbled and dropped it before catching it again properly. This apparantly
is a violation of a new FIFA rule whereby the goalie can only catch the ball
once. I'm sure the rule is only meant to cover tge case where the keeper catches
the ball and then starts wasting time by rolloing it around before picking it up
again for the kick out. It was a very harsh decision for the CAmeroon keeper, as
it was accidental.

Cameroon were fortunate to win I thought. Kana Biyik scored the only
goal on 22 minutes (yes it was Kana not Oman). Morocco lost keeper
Zaki through injury and he'll be a huge loss if he misses the remainder
of the tournament. Makanaky was the best of the Roons.
Nigeria deserved their win over Senegal although they left it late
scoring with 2 minutes remaining. Siasia had given them the lead on 13
minute with Bokende (sp?) equalising for the hosts.
Tongiht Egypt v Zambia is live at 6.30 GMT (7.30 Europe) with
highlights at 10.00 GMT. I presume there is also a game in Group C
today.

� This apparently is a violation of a new FIFA rule whereby the goalie
can only catch the ball once.
The team I play for in the Reading and district league suffered from
the this new rule just last Saturday. Our keeper parried the ball,
patted it down as it ran away from him and then caught it; the ref.
decided that the ball was under control before he patted it (ridiculous
since he was blocking a shot) and awarded a free kick three yards from
our goal-line!! Obviously they scored, putting us 3-1 down with 5 mins.
left. Needless to say, I think the exact meaning of this rule should be
sorted out PDQ.

2 very good games last night
Morocco 1 Zaire 1
Cracking match 0-0 after 83 minutes when Zaire are awarded a penalty.
This was weakly hit and well saved.
89 minutes Moroccan clean through, miles offside, lineman flags,
referee overrules, 1-0 Morocco. Chaos ensues.
90 minutes Zaire snatch a dramatic last gasp equaliser.
Sorry I don't remeber the scorers but even without the late drama it ws
still a cracking game full of good football. Pity one team has to go
out. Zaire need a draw v Cameroon to qualify or a 2-1, 3-2 defeat. A
1-0 win for Cameroon means Zaire and Morocco draw lots.
Nigeria 2 Kenya 1
Kenya were supposed to be the whipping boys of this group. They
started better and tested the keeper early on however 2 quick goals
killed the game. The Kenyans battled back and got a vital late penalty
which could yet see them through. Basically Kenya and Senegal are
level on points and goal difference. They meet tomorrow. The winner
qualifies along with the impressive Nigerians. If they draw they draw
lots.

| Cameroon beat host nation Senegal 1-0 on Sunday, also on Sunday Nigeria
beat Zaire.
So, the semi-final line-up is :
Cameroon v Ivory Coast
Nigeria v Ghana
Having watched a few of the matches up to now, I have to say that the
standards in African football are very low. They can't control a ball,
cross it, and they just don't put any moves together. Nearly all the goals
scored in this championship have been very scrappy affairs.
Cameroons performance at Italia 90 seems to have been one swallow not making
a summer, or a flash in the pan. They have a long way to go!

Re -1,
I thought the football was of a high standard although the pitches
leave a lot to be desired.
As for the flash in the pan, well
Algeria 2 West Germany 1 1982 - Algeria were cheated out of a 2nd round
place.
Morocco won their group in Mexico and then lost to a late German goal.
Algeria drew with Northern Ireland but were unfortunate to come up
against Brazil and Spain who both had excellent World Cups.
Cameroon's exploits in Italy were no flash in the pan.
Pele figures the Africans will dominate world football byt he ned of
the decade. I wouldn't go that far but certainly these sides are no
pushovers and will continue to make a major impact on the world stage.

Isn't it funny what a short memory some people have? Can this "flash in the pan"
that our author refers to be the same team that for half an hour made the
English side look positively stupid? Can it be the same side that, with a little
more awareness of the "professional" skills of the the modern centre forward,
would have bundled our lillywhite super-heros out of the Cup? Can this apparent
footballing blindness have something to do with the fact that African teams have
a startling tendancy to be BLACK, and show scant respect for footballing
history?
As one reply pointed out; African teams have less to be embarassed about in
their World Cup peformances than the likes of Scotland. And I, for one, prefer
to keep as a souvenir of Italy 90, the exploits of Cameroon rather than the
image of one well-used media megastar in "excellent condition".
Egypt who have a record second to none in African Club competition, with the
likes of Zamalek always featuring strongly, beat Czechoslovakia 2-0, Poland 4-0.
and, if my memory serves me right, Finland 2-1 in warm up matches prior to the
African Nation's Cup tournament. But they then could not get past a Zambian side
with a defence that has drawn nothing but praise from all the reviewers I have
heard on French, British, and African radio. They and Egypt are the only two
sides in the tournament to have an African trainer.
In the last African Nation's Cup, the two teams who qualified for the World Cup
in Italy (Egypt and Cameroon) went out before the 1/4 final stage, evidence in
itself that there is a wealth of talent yet to be discovered. And let's not
forget that the few club teams in Africa that are anything close to being
professional are the teams run by the Armed Forces.

Could this be something of a generalisation, or am I perhaps missing something?
Two hundred or so talent scouts from all over Europe (including a huge
contingent from the notoriously arrogant Italian League) are currently slinking
from hotel to hotel in Dakar with checkbook and notepad at the ready in the
hope, one assumes, of signing up for a snip he latest attacking sensation from
the Dark Continent. Even the Italian National Coach is in attendance along with
representatives fromn the Italian FA. One assumes they will take the opportunity
to swap notes over a gin sling on the beachside terrace with Gordon Taylor
and the gang from the UK.
It must have something to do with the fact that these new talents, like all
Africans, are big, muscular, and good at sport. Oh yeah, and England put a
hatfull past Egypt in the Worl Cup, too.

I must agree with the last note. I mean you can't say in one
sentence, 'they are good going forward' and in the next "However
defensively like all African teams they seem a bit hopeless" when most
of the games have been low scoring affairs.
I think the difference between the African teams of the recent past
and the ones I've seen in this tournament is, they've got wise! They
play alot more cautiously than they used to, and have the ability to
slow games down. Which I personally find regretable.

African nations have one big advantage in a world cup play-off, No one
expects them to survive the first round. They can play relaxed, and
anything but last place in the group is a big success. One of the major
reasons tha Sweden did so poorly in Italy was the expectations from the
home press and commentators. The loss against Brazil was concidered a
catastrophy and put an even greater pressure on the team. Proffesionals
are more good on handeling pressure, England proved that when they
turned 1-2 against Cameroon to a 3-2 victory.
If Camerron qualify qualify for US-94, they will have some espectations
of doing well. I don't think they will stand up to them. Every nation
will bare Italia-90 in mind and won't take the Cameroons lightly.

| Did anyone see the Cameroon v. I Coast game last night?
It went to penalties (the game+extra time had about 2 or 3 shots on
goal) and the Ivory Coast keeper saved 3 penalties - but the last
penalty from Cameroon as pathetic... He just stood next to the penalty
spot and scooped the ball towards the keeper, no run up etc. The keeper
could not fail to save it!

Nigeria v Ghana - great game. The right result - just about. Nigeria
led after 12 minutes with Ghana equalising a minute before the break.
An early goal in the 2nd half sent Ghana into the final. nigeria had a
defender sent off on 75 mins but still hit the underside of the bar
late on.
Cameroon - Ivory Coast - poor game. Omam-Biyik missed a penalty in
normal time and his brother Kana-Biyik hit the inside of the post.
Cameroon did not deserve to win it for their negative attitude (they
had the same attitude in the � final v Senegal. The Ivory Coast's
keeper made some great penalty saves particularly the one from
Omam-Biyik in the shoot out.
Ghana are hot favourites for the final and I can't see Ivory Coast
upsetting them.

Cameroon played like zombies last night, nothing like the
performances they gave during the last WC.
That sub they brought on MAKANAKY was pathetic, he just ambled
around the place, then proceeded to take the 1st penalty
and just about passed it to the I.Coast keeper.
Overall I was delighted to see the Ivory coast win, but
their keeper took a bad knock late in game, hope he is
ok for the final.
I think Ghana are a much better team and should win teh final.

| Looks like African footballer of the year Abedi Ayew Pel� (Olympique
Marseille) is having a great tournament.
Don't underestimate the Ivorians (sp?). Fofana, Traor� and the keeper
whose name escapes me are no fools.
At least, the two most exciting teams, which scored the most goals,
made it to the final.
I favour Ghana to win narrowly.

Yeah but what a marathon Penalty session it was. 4-4 after each team
had shoot the five, then all were scored up to 10-10. Which meant the
players who took the first ones were on again! Leboah missed Ghanas
next penalty and Ivory Coast won 11-10! The game itself wasn't to good,
but really Ghana should have wrapped it up in normal time.

The Senegalese manager, Claude Le Roy has been sacked.
The host nation reached the quarter final where they were put out by
Cameroon. Tough job being a manager, what with Real Madrid's boss, Raddy
Antic, being relieved of his duties, with them top of their league...ouch!
