he has proved that his success with Liverpool was not a fluke by
turning around Blackburns fortunes with some astute buying.
His team now looks a good bet for promotion.

dont make me laugh,
all that guy can be praised for doing is getting in a half-decent
keeper for once and spotting Ryan Giggs potential - if indeed he did
that. I cant see much difference apart from these 2 exceptions between
United now, and United last year. The reason that you are at the top
is because we (Liverpool) and Arsenal arent playing to the same level
this year, otherwise you probably would not be top!
as for the ECWC, yeah, they got it, mainly thanks to Mark Hughes
diving, but he sensationally managed to get you knocked out of it
this year...

| I agree wholeheartedly. Who else could be a serious contender. He is
not only the creator of the most solid defence in the whole of the
first division, he has sought, and found the most exciting young talent
in Lee Sharpe (soon to be back) and Ryan Giggs. He was also responsible
for bringing Mark Hughes back to English football - whether you love
him or hate him you must admit that he is a great player. All of this
(and much more besides..ECWC...etc..) has culminated in Manchester United
having the most solid and exciting squad in the first division with
serious title ambitions and chances.
By far and away the only bloke for the award.

140.12 | Has to be Johnny King. | ESSB::MCUNNIFFE | d i g i t a l | Wed Dec 18 1991 18:34 | 22 |
|
The manager of the year isn't Fergie or Graham but one second div. manager
who made the most effective killing during the summer. That manager has to be
one Johnny King of Tranmere Rovers who swooped to sign that most prolific of
strikers, John Aldridge or TGA as he is known in this conference. In fact, that
must be the signing of the century. I can see this being a quiz question for
years to come. What 2nd div. manager signed a player from Spain who then
notched 27 goals before Christmas??????
English Manager of year
-----------------------
1. Johnny King (for his signing of TGA)
2. Graeme Souness (for leading injury hit Liverpool to UEFA QF'S)
3. Kenny Dalglish (for steering Blackburn to top of 2nd div)
European Manager of year
------------------------
Same as the above

140.14 | Trevor Francis should get it. | QETOO::CHAVES | A broken clock is right twice a day | Wed Dec 18 1991 18:41 | 13 |
|
In my opinion the manager of the year award should go to someone that
got his team to perform above and beyond (fan??) expectations. Someone
that obviously has the best talent, which is the case with Ferguson, is
expected to win and should not therefore be considered. I don't know what
anyone expected of the Owls, if anything, but I doubt anyone expected them
to be where they are at this point in the season. By comparing last
year' final standings to current standings, I'd say Trevor Francis has
done the most remarkable job of anyone in the first division. Besides,
he still plays, doesn't he?

| Regarding Cunno nimination:
He should be nominated for BOZO of the year award. Regardless of
of how great TGA may be, and I'll give you the benefit of a doubt,
signing him was an expensive, idiotic move. What has he done for
Tranmere? Are they better off this year then last? I don't think so.
For the same money they probably could have gotten 3 or 4 youngsters
and finish in the same place in the standings and end up with some
possibilities for the future. As it is, they'll end up with a 50
goal scorer but no better off then they were beofre him.
Plain common sense says you don't invest mega-pounds for a single
player unless you belive you he can make a difference. TGA hasn't.
(BTW, Cunno. I got the picture. Thanks)

========
1. Alec Miller -Hibs: After almost going bust, he has lifted his team
with 2 signings Burridge and Wright and went on to win
the Skol Cup beating Rangers in the semi.
2. Joe Jordan -Hearts: Sitting at the top of the League after almost
at the bottom the same time last year says it all.
Incase any Jambo's disagree, I'll be the first to
nominate Jordan next year IF they manage to win the
league.
3. Jim Jeffries -Falkirk: As with Alex Totten of St Johnstone last year
Jeffries has brought his team into the Premier League
and established a base which should see them remain up
for a good few seasons.
Special mention for Watty Smith for continuing with the good work HE
has been doing for the last 5 seasons.
As for Europe I'm not that sure, but Fergie should be in with a shout
as should the Sampdoria manager.

| Fergie #1, no doubt, at least for England. ECWC, Super Cup, and for
persistence - even with all the money, a manager has to make the team
play. It is much harder to make highly paid (over paid) 'professionals'
(?) play than a young enthusiastic team. So true for Man. Utd, where
winning is expected, albeit absent for a while. My other vote goes to
the greatest of them all this past 10 years though, Cloughie. He is in
a class by himself - no money, but makes great players every year.
Joe Jordan (ex Utd of course) should make it in Scotland, unless Liam
Brady makes a miraculous turn-around. The Rangers manager should also
be commended for maintaining the mess Sourpuss must have left behind.
In Europe, who knows, and who cares! I'll take Jack Charlton though
long before that establishment boy Taylor.

Favourite's gotta be Sunderland, although I heard they were also
interested in Neil Warnaock of Notts County.
Newcastle maybe - Ossie's surely on borrowed time at St James'..
Feel sorry for that new bloke (Crosby?), he's not done so bad so far
- I think it's four wins in four games!!- yet he probably won't get
the job permanently.
Actually Al, I'm not sure PSV did "dump" on Robson...if I remember
rightly Robson took the job on with the understanding that he would
win the European Cup in two seasons or leave. PSV have been winning
the Dutch league since before he arrived, so he's not really improved
things all that much for them really.
Apart from which they must be fed up with his TV interviews by
now.. 8-)

Unless things start going wrong, I think Malcolm Crosby will keep
the job, till the end of the season. If he gets promotion, or wins the cup
(unlikely now that Greavsie has tipped us), he will have to be given the
job permanently.
As Robson is not available till the end of the season, I doubt he
will be considered at Roker, until Crosby has had a chance to maintain
his success.
You're right, it is 4 out of 4, which included a 3-0 cup win over
Port Vale, who become the victims on Saturday, to make it 5 out of 5.
