With so much happening in world around us, the political situation is bound to have an affect on football. Personally i hate when athletic efforts gets over- ruled by other circumstances. Yugoslavia and USSR rightfully deserves their place in Euro-92, but now it looks that they won't participate. The question is now how to deal with the situation. UEFA and FIFA have one opinion, you noters probably have another one. Mats

Italy and Denmark was yesterday officially announced as reserves for USSR and Yugoslavia for Euro-92 next year. One of the UEFA-members, the Switzer Freddy Rumo made a reservation on the decition. He want's all second-placed teams to have another qualification for those two reserve-slots. Surprisingly Switzerland is one of those teams.;-) Freddy Rumo thinks he have support in UEFA for his opinion. Yesterdays decision was made by UEFA's Euro-92 committy. Formally UEFA's board of directors must decide it on their meeting on the 16:th of January, the day before the drawing of Euro-92. UEFA must think very litte of Cyprus. Norway is current second in the group, Italy needs a point on Saturday to get the second place. It would be the biggest laugh of the year if Italy were to be beatened. The match between Albaina and Spain is cancelled due to the political situation in Albania. USSR won't exist after new years eve. Slovenian skiers are already competing under the Slovenian flag. Perhaps a re-draw of the European World Cup qualification isn't such a bad idea after all. Mats

If they are recognised by UEFA then the Ukraine should be allowed to take the place of the USSR. They would probably field a stronger team than any of the other republics. Dynamo Kiev has supplied the backbone of the USSR team for several years now. GORDON...
139.3 | "USSR" still to compete? | FORTY2::ASH | Grahame Ash @REO | Thu Dec 19 1991 11:16 | 7 |
I believe the Ukranian authorities have said that they will allow their players to compete in a USSR team next year. Presumably that means that the Soviet Football managment will have to survive in some form in order to pick the side, as I don't imagine that they'll just select the Ukranian team - wouldn't please Yeltsin too much! grahame |
