| Very disappointing game. My personnal opinion is that 2 people are to blaim with
this poor result. In first place the coach. When Belgium played in Tunis we were
playing with 5 defenders against Tunisie as where we should have played as an
offensive team in preparation of the games against Cypres and Faroer. Now the
Belgian team didn't now how to beat a very defensive opponent with the result
they only scored once, and this goal was even a huge mistake of the goalie of
Cypres.
The second person to blame was Enzo Scifo. He is a world class player,if he
would play for the team. But yesterday he was more concerned for his own game
and to show everybody what his skills are.Result, the offensive compartiment of
the team was not feeded well and we got only one goal.
Anyway,we got two points and that's what counts. In a couple of weeks we travel
to the Faroer for another win. That means that the other candidats for the 2
tickets always faces a deficit to the Belgian team.
U.S. here we come!!

| That 1-0 result does look a bit shaky. I hope they can re-group against
the Faroes for a comfortable (2-3 goals) win. About Austria losing, I
think they were definitely taking them for granted. Sure, it *could*
happen again, but if Belgium play anywhere close to the level they are
capable, it shouldn't. Anything less thn full points against the
"minnows" would be a disaster, since there are some quality teams in
this group.

Tom, i agree with you. Nine times out of ten Belgium will beat the
Faroes with a margin of 3-4 goals. But every now and then, a top team in
Europe loses a point or even two against the "minnows", ant that the charm
of international football. It also proves how difficult it is to just
"collect" two points against such nations. Last WC qualification Sweden
played Albania, and were 1-0 down in both games. And against Costa Rica
who was concidered to be a third rate nation we lost 1-2.
To play a team with nine defenders, and who's counter-attacs are very
dangerous is difficult. A early goal often solves the problem, but
having 0-0 and ten minutes to go it's easy to panic. So, never take
anything for grantage. (As i did in the WC and put SEK 500 on Sweden
winning over Costa Rica:-()

I only saw the goals. Southall punched one into his own net

Saunders and Rush combined well for a good goal in the second

Yes Tom,with remaining games against CSSR and Faroer Isles at home, Cyprus,
Wales and Roumanie away,I think they defenit qualified for the next WC. But
what is more important,it's the first time they are really confident and
believing in their own strength. They are saying, and I believe it too, that they
are nearly unbeatable at this time. This is defenit the winners mind that other
countries as like Germany,Italy,The Netherlands(?!?) already had.
Remember that we've also still 4 contenders in the European Cups and that the
U-21 are also on top of their group.
Looks promising,doesn't it?

Yes, the Czechs and the Slovaks dropped a point in Cyprus, as where the other
contenders won two points. I think the road ended for them in Limassol.
As the newspapers and the tele were saying, they were really crap and Cyprus

As for next week, I really think Belgium is going to win, even we will be happy

physical for them, and they got no help at all from the German referee who
disallowed a goal in the 2nd half, and seemed to give them virtually nothing
else.
Still, it livens the group up, and Wales' confidence must be sky-high by now.
(Only 27 000 there - surely they'd be better off watching this than the
rugby?!)

would require Romania to win away to RCS and win at hoem to Belgium.

Let's hope they manage it. I for one would like to see the likes of
Ian Rush, Dean Saunders, Hughes, Giggs, Southall, Symonds (this

For some (Rush, Saunders, Hughes, Southall) it undoubtably

Good luck to 'em. I'd love to see them qualify.

I don't think so. The rules for making a classification is, which is different
from Brittisch football, first number of victories, then goal difference, then
goals scored. Further on I'm not sure. Therefore Wales is still above RCS be-

it's always fun to have some predictions but still we've to stay real. I don't
think Belgium will win in Romania, but they will beat the RCS. Therefore I think
the most important game is Wales-RCS. The team who drops points will be out.
06-Jun-1993 Faroe Islands - Wales A

08-Sep-1993 Wales - Czechoslovakia H
08-Sep-1993 Faroe Islands - Romania A
13-Oct-1993 Romania - Belgium H
13-Oct-1993 Wales - Cyprus H
27-Oct-1993 Czechoslovakia - Cyprus H
17-Nov-1993 Wales - Romania ?
17-Nov-1993 Belgium - Czechoslovakia H
the group finishes...
BELGIUM 16
WALES 14 |--> Second place decided by the game Wales-Romania
ROMANIA 14 |
RCS 11
I hope that Romania beats Wales, because even Belgium is better than Britisch
teams we nearly never can beat them (WC90-England,EC92-Wales,WC94-Wales).So I
don't want they will be any chance that Belgium will draw a Britisch team over
there in the States. At the other end, I like Britisch football, as I'm playing
myself in a Britisch team here in Belgium.

wales 8 10 goals +6
then in october
belgium beat romania away (oh please)
wales beat cyprus at home
rcs beat cyprus at home
we reach nov 17th looking like
play points
belgium 9 16
rcs 9 12
wales 9 12
romania 9 11
belgium beat rcs, wales draw against romania - we're through

| Giggs & Rush
RCS Went ahead through Kukar after an error by Mark Hughes
Giggs goal was a contender for goal of the month. Phillips sent a cross in from
the right, Giggs steams in through the defence, sticks out his foot and it's 1-1.
Rush's goal was also superb. Another cross from the right, which Giggs, who was
surrounded by defenders, cooly nods into the path of Rush, who'd escaped his
marker, and slips the ball under the keeper.
Hughes had a great chance to put Wales 3-1 ahead after the break, but his header
was just to high from an inch perfect cross from Bowen.
The RCS equalizer came from a dubious freekick decision to say the least. 25-30
yards out and Dubecyk (SP?) of Real Madrid, emulates Giggs with a superb strike.
Both teams had chances late on to steal the game. Kukar should have had a
hatrick, but the clearest chances came in the dying seconds when Saunders
steamed through 2 defenders, and shot from 8 yards, but the keeper managed to
get a hand to it. 30 seconds later it was Young clearing off the line at the
other end.
From the highlights on BBC, Wales played some superb stuff in the 1st half, but
were lucky not lose, with the number of chances they gave the RCS in the 2nd.
Very entertaining match

makes sense to convert one of them into midfield.

I think that yesterday's error disproves your argument! I do agree
that defenders can score goals, and I do agree that attackers can block
shots, but, if it were as simple as you imply then the clubs with the
money would by all the 'best' players, not by position.
When you play in a given position, you learn where to go
'instinctively'. So, Lineker (or Hughes even) will automatically end
up on the end of crosses that other players wouldn't. Likewise
Pallister will be in a position to clear or tackle without thinking
about it, when someone else might be too far away.
I base my comments on my experience as team manager, captain and
experienced central defender. There are some time when YOU JUST WATCH
AND NOT TACKLE.
Incidentally, I didn't see the incident in question...

If Wales win their last 2 games they will finish ahead of Romania.
RCS can finish ahead of Wales but they must win away to Belgium.
I don't think they'll do that so Wales still have a good chance.
A victory last night would have eliminated RCS and left Romania needing
a win v Belgium and a draw in Cardiff. Romania now require 2 draws
or possibly 3 points depending on how RCS do in Brussels. This will go

we still have to rely on Belgium not losing to RCS.

Not quite. The only way that Wales can win and fail to qualify is
if Wales beats Romania by exactly 1 goal, and if RCS beats The Red
Devils of Belgium (God forbid) by exactly one goal. Otherwise,
RCS would be first on goal differential, and the goal differential
between Wales and Belgium would either be tied or favor Wales. If
the goal differential between Wales and Belgium is tied, then
Wales goes for having scored more goals. (Unless, of course,
Wales wins 1-0 and Belgium falls by 4-5, but that's as ridiculous
as Israel beating France.)

After a couple of bottles of beer the permutations cleared but I could

I don't know how familiar you are with Wales's attempts to miss out

| Well RCS beat Cyprus 3 - 0 last night to push them into 3rd place.
If RCS win their last game in Belgium then you can use the formula:-
Wales margin of victory + RCS margin of victory >= 4
for a Wales qualification.
Any other Belgium v RCS result will see Wales qualify with any old win.
Easier said than done!!!
Let's hope it works out for Wales.

between every program on BBC1 when the olympics were on ? I don't
think so. This sort of thing happens every time there is a sporting
occasion concerning England and Wales. Instead of concentrating on the
sport they make it a nationalistic matter. I absolutely cracked up when
Jackson flamingoed up the hurdles in the Olympics. ( a flamingo up is
like a male chicken up but much bigger;-) ). Beware of your sanity when
there is a rugby match, the trailers get too personal. I just like to
see all the sad little Welsh faces, getting angry at the BBC for
implying that they were already in America, and this match was just a
formality. Come on you Rumania. Put five in the net before half time

Although Romania deserved to go in 1up at half-time, Wales (according

I reckon Wales would have got the third that would have taken them to

Don't take it to heart - irresponsible noting is (unfortunately) a
feature of this conference. 99% of the notes by non-Englishmen in 130
are of this nature - even when their own teams win!.
Very few Englishmen would subscribe to the views expressed in .152,
whatever the author's experiences in Pontypridd. In his defence, I
don't think he was revelling in the death of the Welsh fan. Most
football lovers (both in Britain and elsewhere) wanted Wales to
qualify, for at least two reasons:
1 - They haven't been seen in a world arena for a long time now.
2 - There's a lot of curiosity (in Italy anyway) about Giggs, and to
a lesser extent, Hughes, Saunders, Speed and - recently - Goss.
Just get back on your horses and qualify for EC96 - your rise to the
top might be as swift as Denmark's demise!

Re .156
OK Rich, so I gather you didn't mean to imply that the death of the
Welsh guy would mean we Welshies wouldn't gloat too much. Pity you
structured your paragraphs to mislead then. If you read your reply
carefully you will see two paragraphs. The first deals with the
Wales result and offers condolances to Mr Yorath. The second starts
with the death of the fan and immediately goes on to point out that
"It makes me feel better knowing that the Welsh won't gloat.....".
As far as your hating "the attitude of the Welsh nation" I'd like to
know which one you mean. You imply that there is some issue upon which
we are all of like mind. Maybe you mean that we like to beat England in
anything. I suppose "the English nation" don't have the same feelings
of friendly rivalry, and if they do, you hate them to??
I am very interested to hear what this "attitude" of ours is that
you hate. I would also be interested to hear of instances of this
attitude in this conference.
As for knocking us down a peg or two,.... our dream of going to USA '94
is shattered. But thats what it was, only a dream. Currently we have a
handful of world class players. They play their hearts out for their
country and we only just missed out again. Its nothing to cry about.
Since the last world cup we're still one of the few nations to beat
West Germany. Sometimes fate lends a hand. Deep down we know we'll
never be a great football nation, far less the "greatest footballing
nation".
No boyo, its England who've been knocked down a peg. Well, not
England itself, but those of you English football fans who have this
idea that England have a divine right to be World Champions. You heard
it on Sky last night. The disbelief of the commentators that San Marino
should dare to score. There was even the comment "that volley [by
Ferdinand] was worthy of better opposition" as if San Marino
should be eternally grateful that England deign to lower themselves and
give the little nation a lesson on how to play real football.
It sounds to me Rich as if you had a tough time living in Pontypridd.
I have a great many English friends living in Wales (I lived for 7 years
near Chepstow on the border). All of them would say that they have
been made to feel at home; that we Welshies are a particularly
friendly lot (is this a Celtic trait?). So, you pig headed Anglo-Saxon,
you must have done something to upset the locals if they weren't
friendly......now I wonder what you did.......or said maybe???

How would you like to be abused for walking down a street, for

Sad, but probably true (at least in my experience). It might make you
bitter sometimes, especially whan you go out of your way to be a
"decent sort of chap" and have it thrown in your face but there's
precious little you can do, short of rewriting the history books. Just
stomach it. Our colonial ancestors and our barbaric football hooligans
have a lot to answer for.
Of course, this probably goes some way to explaining why many
Englishmen in this conference prefer to stay clear of 129 and stick to
writing in the notes assigned to their club sides.

Very disappointing result from Cardiff. It was made worse by RTE radio
and the Windsor Park scoreboard incorrectly giving the score as 2-1 to
Wales. Any Welshman in Ireland must have been sick. There's nothing
worse than having a score turned around.
Judging from the BBC highlights Romania deserved it however if Paul
Bodin had converted the penalty Wales would surely have qualified.

Hard luck on Wales. Had the chances to win. I think a stronger
defence is needed though. Romania had chances to score about 5 or six
on the break.
Congratualtions to Romania.
