EUROPEAN FOOTBALLER OF THE YEAR AWARD - 1991
============================================
The European footballer of the year is quite easy. It can only be that
most prolific of strikers. The man who shattered nets from Newport to Oxford
to Liverpool to Real Sociedad and now for Tranmere Rovers. Yes, John Aldridge
is the only man that can be seriously considered for that mantle. Any
player that scores 26 goals by early December deserves all the accolades
available.
In second place, I would put Ray Houghton for his outdstanding performances
for the reds this season during a very difficult period for the Pool. His
goals have also been very crucial and his commitment is second to none. Well
done Ray.
In third place, it has to be Gary Linekar who has also done very well. A
gentleman to the full, he just keeps banging in the goals in Aldo-like fashion
and gets on with the job.
1. John Aldridge
2. Ray Houghton
3. Gary Linekar
Outside the English League.
1. Jean Marie Papin
2. Jean Lucca Vialli
3. Lothar Matthaus

the Official European Footballer of the Year award, awarded by the
French weekly France Football, based on votes cast by journalists from
all European countries and recognised as the only valid Award.
You still have a few days to vote for YOUR footballer of the year. See
base note for details.
I shall announce results on the 31st.

| The 1991 FOOTBALL NOTESFILE EUROPEAN FOOTBALLER AWARD has gone to:
Jean-Pierre Papin (Olympique de Marseille) 73 points
Runner-ups:
Chris Waddle (Olympique de Marseille) 62 points
Marco Van Basten (AC Milano) 41 points
Point allocation: 10 for 1st, 5 for 2nd, 1 for 3rd.
Papin polled 5 first, 4 second and 3 third
Waddle polled 6 first and 2 third
Van Basten polled 3 first, 2 second and 1 third.
The reason why I asked you to name your League and European favorites
separately was to avoid bias, as 95% of voters were British or Irish
:-)

A question for you JF..
How many of the Waddle voters were also British or Irish? This
would enable us to realise how many had voted for him based on
the **** they'd read in the papers as opposed to having actually
seen him play this season.
He's a camel on two legs imo...60-odd caps for England -
sheesh 8-( - with about 5 international goals to his name.
Some striker eh?
He doesn't take a very good spot-kick either... 8-(
