120.0. "Women's World Cup in China" by JOKUR::OCNJ::BOICE (When in doubt, do it.) Tue Nov 19 1991 22:43

Any information/scores on the Women's World Cup now running in China? The
few Boston papers I looked at aren't even reporting any scores.

The U.S. team should be playing their second game either today or tomorrow.

USA also won their second game, beating Brazil 5-0. Heinrichs scored 2,
Jennings, Akers-Stahl and Hamm scored one eatch. It looks promising for the
States and Sweden who won against Japan 8-0. USA beated Sweden by 3-2 in the
opening game. Sweden had most of the chances, but failed to put the ball in the
net (they even missed a penalty). USA was 3-0 up 21 minutes in the second
half when the Swedes woke up, but it was too late. The final score was 3-2.

    Very close wins for three of the four semi-finalists. China put up an
    enormous pressure against Sweden, but with luck and help with the
    posts, Sweden manage to hold on. Sundhage missed a penalty just before
    half time, that's Swedens second penalty-miss during the tournament.

    Norway had the game in their hand against Italy, but a sloppy defense
    allowed Italy to equalize in the last minute of ordinary time (ladies
    play 2x40 min). In extra time, Italy had a few clear chances of
    scoring, but when the Norwegian got their penaly it was only 5 minutes
    left, and the Italians had no strength to put up an extra offensive.

    Germany had a comfortable win against Denmark. Though Denmark scored
    the first one on penaly, the referee was courtess enough to give
    Germany a compensation a few minutes later. Germany had the rest of the
    game, and it was a combination of unluck and bad skill from Germany to
    not score in ordinary time.

    I don't have any reprort from the USA game, but it looks like they drew
    the weakest team in the quarter-finals. The USA-team looks very strong,
    they are definatelly one of the favourites for the title. The semi's
    are;

    		Sweden	-   Norway
    		USA	-   Italy

    My prediction is Sweden - USA in the final, and that Sweden get their
    revenge for the loss in the group-match.

120.8Norway in the finalGOTA1::APPELQVISTI tunneled Hysn!!!Wed Nov 27 1991 10:5620

    Well, well, my reputation as a predictor gets worse and worse. The
    first semi was played this morning European time, and the result was

    		Sweden		-	Norway

    		  1			   4

    Sweden had a dream start with a goal after six minutes, but after that
    it was all Norway. They had a bunch of chanses (a shot in the bar, a
    head in the post), and they equalized on a penalty after 42 minutes in
    the first half, two minutes overtime. The third came after only 26
    seconds played of the second half, and the game was over for Seweden.

    Norway plays a quick, tecnical football, and have a very strong
    defence. Swedens weekest point was their midfield, who was unable to
    stop the quick Norwegians. I'll give you the result of the second semi
    as soon as i got it.

    I have no report about the game itself. Sweden - Germany on friday
    (third place game), and the final, USA - Norway, is on saturday.

    As my heart beats for Norway in this final, i predict USA as world-
    champions...;-)

Eeehaa!!! May the women lead our men out the depths...

Sports Channel is supposed to show this final this week. Maybe, someone can
confirm what day and time?
120.13Sportschannel to show tapes.........ASDG::JOHNSONMon Dec 02 1991 18:109
 I don't have the schedule with me (will post tomorrow if I remember to bring
 it in) but Sportschannel is showing the tapes of the games. Last night I
 happened to tune into the Sweden-USA 1st game won by the US 3-2. After seeing
 the tape I was definetly impressed with Sweden. This Wednesday at 10pm I
 have heard that they will televise the Brazil-USA game. Sounds like they will
 be showing all the USA games.
