117.0. "Euro92 qualifying snapshot v3.0" by GOTA1::APPELQVIST (I tunneled Hysn!!!) Thu Nov 14 1991 10:00

We can now say WELCOME to France, USSR, Yugoslavia and England, the will all
travel to Sweden next summer.

Scotland have to wait until next week before the can celebrate(?). Germany
needs three points in the remaining two games, and that wouldn't be a problem
for them. Holland can have a very nervous chrismas, a win for Greece aganist
Portugal, a draw against Holland and it depends how many goals the can score
against Malta the 22nd december.

Personally i don't think that Yugoslavia will participate next year due to the
political situation, and in that case Denmark take their place. BTW, i read in
this mornings paper that Estonia, Lithuania and Lathvia will be in the drawing
for qualification for WC i USA, the drawing will take place in New York,
8th december. How about USSR and Estonia in the same group...

117.88 groups for 1994?GEMVAX::HILLThu Nov 14 1991 15:2919

Mats, does this mean there will be 8 qualifying groups for 1994? As it
is now, there are 34 countries participating, and if the 3 Baltic
states will play that's 37. I also head that Israel has applied to UEFA
to be part of European groups. (It is crazy for them to play Fiji, NZ,
Australia, etc every time). If this brings it to 38, there will still
be the same setup of most groups with 5 countries and a couple of
4-team groups. This is better than two groups of 6 + five groups of 5.
There is also one less place from Europe, since Africa picked up a 3rd
    spot. Hmmmm, gets kinda complicated...

    Tom

117.9The End is nigh ?CHEST::ROWELLLife is an egg & cress sandwichThu Nov 14 1991 15:5410
I read somewhere that if there is a total break up of the Soviet Union,
there will be 42 separate countries. I would guess that at least 6, and
maybe more will join UEFA. Add Israel to that as well..... and consider
Africa wanting more world cup places.......

How long do you think UEFA will support separate U.K. entries ?
How long before England, Scotland, Wales and N.I. are forced to merge ?

    Regards,
    Wayne
117.10Opposite Surely ?SCOAYR::BHUGHESThu Nov 14 1991 16:1513

    re: -1

If UEFA are happy to accept an increase in numbers with countries such
as Latvia and Estonia etc. joining in, I can't see them being in a
position to force the merger of Scotland, England, N.I. and Wales. I'm
not being offensive to any of the new countries but surely if they're
allowed to compete as individuals then countries like Scotland etc.,
with a proven world cup record ( albeit as first round losers ) must be
allowed to compete. I think it should strengthen the case for Scotland
    etc. to remain separate.

    Brian.
117.11Not Really, it depends on the noise generatedCHEST::ROWELLLife is an egg & cress sandwichThu Nov 14 1991 16:2819

But what happens when there are many countries chasing few places.
Other European contries will be concerned the the U.K. has (effectivly)
4 chances to grab these places.

The only reason that UEFA supports separate entries is not because of
proven (or otherwise) track records, or history, but because it gives
them 3 extra votes. With all the new countries springing up (Don't
forget there could be another half dozen from the break up of
Yugoslavia), pressure may be brought to bear.

I for one hope they remain separate. But somehow, I wonder if they will
be allowed to. (At least for World Cup competitions.) On the reverse
side however, I can see major benefits for the U.K. Not that I think
they would be unbeatable, but I believe they would be more competative.

    Regards,
    Wayne.

117.12200 nation to qualify for WC-98??GOTA1::APPELQVISTI tunneled Hysn!!!Thu Nov 14 1991 16:3429

The WC-qualification is under FIFA superstition, not UEFA. Thats why
San Marino and the Faroe Islands can compete in the Euro-qualification.
Estonia, Lithuania and Lathvia was FIFA-members up to 1940, and their
membership was never formally cancelled. Thats why the are getting an
provisional membership and can compete in the WC-qualification.

If there is a total break up of the Soviet Union (and Yugoslavia), i
think that one thing is to do it the olympic qualification
way. Europe has 4 places for Barcelona and there is 8 Qualifying
gruoups. The winners will drawn in a two-legged affair (4 matches),
and it will be played according to UEFA-rules. Another thing to do is to
make the lowest ranked nations , #28-* meet eachother in one or
two two-legged rounds, competing for the 28th place. Then draw the 28
    nations into seven 4-nation groups.

A good thing to do is extend WC to 32 nations, Giving Europe at least
three more entries. Making eight 4-nation groups, and let the two best
teams go threw, you don have to bother who is the best third-positioned
    team.

I think it would be a shame to merge the brittish teams to one
UK-entry. Brittain have a very old and strong football tradition, and i
don't think that UEFA, nor FIFA will change that. Anyway, it's the only
chance for John Aldridge to get any more caps...

On a totally different note sort of:

Will Yugoslavia actually be allowed to take their place in Sweden given
the civil war taking place at the moment. As there hasn't been a war
as such in Europe since this competition started there isn't a
precedent I can think of. I guess UEFA are hedging their bets as
they appear to be letting club teams continue to play in Europe but
isn't it kind of immoral to allow a country that is murdering its own
citizens to appear on a European stage.

Not that I like mixing politics and football but it's an important

UEFA, a week organsiationa as it is, dont know how to handle the
situation. Mr. Lennart Johansson, the UEFA president said yesterday
that no Yugosavian province (Serbia, Croatioa etc) can take Yugoslavias
    place in the finals.

There will be a meeting on december 4th to decide weather Yugoslavia
will participate in Sweden or not.

I read in som other note that if two contries ends up with the same
amount of points, same goaldifference and have scored the same amount
of goals, there will be a drawing of lots to decide the winner. That is
not true. Both UEFA and FIFA states that an extra game on neutral
ground should be the decider (exept for WC-finals, there is no time for
    extra matches).

Why would/could Germany be disqualified anyway ??

Normally I would prefer Luxembourg to get a result and

Before and after the game against Belgium, apparently the German fans
did a lot of vandalising and fighting. UEFA will decide a punishment
for the German Football Associasion on their meeting in December.
There's been talk of diqualifying Germany for Euro-92 (if they qualify)
but i think that UEFA will only make a large fee.

Luxembourg won't be a problem for Germany, a point is enough to win the
