105.0. "Football Fanzines" by MIACT::RANKINE () Tue Oct 08 1991 14:41

Im particularly interested in football fanzines, especially the humour
!!. When Saturday Comes lists all the regularly available fanzines by
club, and the temptation is to send away for a lot of them. Are there
any fanzines which you read on a regular basis, that you would
    recommend ??.

Also Im considering creating my own fanzine , anyone have any
    experience/advice on this ??.

    Cheers
    Paul

Fortune's Always Hiding - West Ham.
    The Lion Roars - Millwall
The Arsenal Echo Echo - guess?

To name but a few, but the laughs come thick and fast with this lot.
Alternately you need'nt search further than our very own notes-files
for things humourous as our man Cunno provides humour on a regular
basis. In fact, I think it would be good idea to publish a DEC only
fanzine on Martin's best/worst efforts. Can anyone think of a suitable
fanzine-ish title for the proposed journal?

There are a few compilation books around, such as "El Tel Is A Space
Alien", which have selections from about twenty or so different
fanzines, one of these maybe a good starting point. Individually
fanzines now break down into two groups; the "upmarket" professionally
produced and the original, poorly produced, "Corona typewriter"
varieties. The latter tend, in my opinion, to be funnier. Of the
"upmarket ones The Spur (Tottenham) and 1-0 Down 2-1 Up (Arsenal)
are good examples. Of the others, When Sunday Comes (Liverpool), King
of the Kippax (Man City) and The Arsenal Echo Echo are fairly good
    examples.

Don't underestimate the amount of time it takes.
You need a lot of material.
Use a good quality WP/DTP package such as DECwrite or Ami Professional.
If cost is an issue don't have it typeset. It helps a lot if you know
    a printer.
To produce a 16 page, A5, black and white glossy will cost between 500
and 700 pounds to print. Cost dependent upon paper quality, number of
    pictures and the like.

Thanks for the quick responses so far.

My thought was to create (probably) a one-off version of a 'fanzine'
with the subject matter of referees and linesmen. I have accrued a
few funny stories about referees, and Im sure that thousands of you
have witnessed a few comedians wearing the black. As most Football
League refs are members of local Referees associations, who regularly
liase with each other, a circular letter to all RA's should provide a
fair amount of referee biased stories. Further pleas for funny stories
in mediums such as this, and WSC, should (Im am optimist) provide me
with eenuff material for an issue. Depending on the sucess, or not, of
this, as wel as the amount of interest/material generated, or not, then
there may be a follow up.

Any comments, funny stories and cartoons etc appreciated.

Silly question... When I got home yesterday and put the TV on there
    was a footie-fanzine-type programme on BBC2(?)

Anyone know what its called, or how long its been running for ?
I thought it was quite entertaining, especially the bits about
    Gazza and 5-bellies !!

Glasgow Celtic have three fanzines that I know of....

"Not the View" (Tongue in cheek title as the clubs official newsapaper
                     is called "The View")

"Once a Tim " (The best in my opinion,as it slags the Huns the most, and
has some excellant comic strips in it too)

I cannot remember the name of the 3rd one,as I saw it for the 1st time
last night(although the caption on the back was hilarious).
It showed a picture of Charlie Nicholas turning away after obviously
scoring as goal, only for the caption to read......

    "He's given it....It's a penalty...IT'S A PENALTY !!!!!

A direct dig at the fact that celtic went a full season without being
awarded a penalty kick in over 40 matches !

Well the magazine I read isn't exactly a fanzine but I'll put it in
    here anyway....

The magazine is called "Winger" and basically is a monthly review
    of British League Football....

It has review of the previous months football action in both
England/Scotland & Wales... plus articles on managers, teams & grounds.

For instance, in this months issue contains 32 pages with articles
on whether Trevor Francis is a good manager, The A to Z of Terry Venables,
Profiles of Reading, Stockport & Bath City... plus Ground of the Month
    - which happens to be Stoke... telling you how to get there... pubs to
visit etc... It also has lots of interesting trivia.. which this month
is about which teams have won the most trophies.. which happens to be
Liverpool with 33.. their first being in 1901 & their last in 1992....
    etc...

Subscription to the magazine costs 15 sterling pounds per year
( for 12 issues ) including postage within the UK.

If your interested in subscribing then you can write to

me. I don't make any money out of this... is put together with some
people I used to work with at my old company.

I'm at the same address as your good friend, and his (smiley thing), Andy
Haig. The FAX number is 0895 253111 and my name is Paul Lem. Thanks in
advance. I'll try to find out where the London shop is to get a copy
myself. I may be up in Bradford later this year, sampling several pints
of Tetleys, Sam Smiths and Tim Taylors plus several curries, so I could
get a copy (or even subscribe) then.

    Re. The Kash.

Yup, I was in there at Easter, it's definately moved up market though.
I remember ordering a Vegetable Special in there about 3 years ago,
and I asked "Whats special about it?", they said "its 30p cheaper".

    My kind of place :^)

    Al.

PS. If you go in the Manville (just opposite Bradford College), ask for
a pint of Manville Bitter - it's the equivalent of the Kash Vegetable
Special. (It's Tetleys, only 5p cheaper a pint!).

    re the Kash

Where else? During my 4 years at college in Bradford I wouldn't go
anywhere else. Not so sure about the recent innovations though, menu's
are all very well but should be kept in their place (ie restaurents).
They'll be having tablecloths next. Meat and mushroom/veg Madras is my
usual. My mouth is watering at the thought of it: must get round to
getting a trip organised. Good to see other devotees in here.

and about 5 mins from Enterprise House. They stock most fanzines from

Thanks Rick. Andy brought it in this morning. I'll have a read at
lunchtime. The article about Francis was good. At the moment I feel the
same way about him. He's done well but how much of this was down to
him? He's still got to prove himself to me. Trying to save Hirst for
the FA cup final when he should have been getting him match fit was a
big mistake - he looked totally out of it.
