102.0. "Info for Visiting Supporters" by GALVIA::SPAIN (Vi skall resa till Sverige ocks) Thu Oct 03 1991 18:57

Please use this topic for getting infomation on visiting away grounds.

I'll start the ball rolling.

I will be in London for a couple of days and I'd like to see Aldershot
v Rotherham on Friday October 18th. I believe the ground is beside the
Railway station. Does anyone know the train times from Aldershot to
London (alternatively I could stay in Rading) after 9.30pm on Friday
night?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Gary.

102.1Aldershot? Are you SURE?TRUCKS::SANTFri Oct 04 1991 09:3513
You're a glutton for punishment, Gary...Aldershot's ground is
truely awful! Second only to Newport County (as was) as the worst
Football League ground I've ever been to. 8-) As an AWAY supporter
you'd be herded into what resembles a corrugated shed, so play
HOME.

Can't help with the train times, but the ground is very easy to
find once in the middle of the town.

Enjoy.

Andy.

...and you must be really desperate to see some English football !!

Will you be popping up to Enterprise House for a swift half ?
102.3Thanks for the infoGALVIA::SPAINVi skall resa till Sverige ocksFri Oct 04 1991 14:1417

Thanks Rob and Andy. I am a glutton for punishment but then I don't
get many opportunities to see live English football so I'll grab the
ones I get.

I'll be in London for a couple of days arriving Thursday lunchtime and
leaving Saturday evening.

I'll try and get up to Enterprise House and have a pint or 2 of "Hun
Lager". :-) I'll make more definite plans next week.

Anyone fancy going to Aldershot? I'm also going to Chelsea v Liverpool
on Sat. Anyone fancy meeting for a pint beforehand or a quick one
afterwards?

Gary.

Gary,
I am not adverse to meeting you for a quick half before the
Aldershot game, but is it really necessary to go to the game as well???

102.6Info on Oldham, please.YUPPY::MCCABEMikeMon Nov 11 1991 13:237
Heading north up the M1 is it best to stay on until the M62 and then
turn left? Or is it quicker to turn off at junction 35-40 and head
across country?

Once in Oldham where is the ground and are there any decent pubs?

102.7Boundary park BAHTAT::BLYTHEEe bah gum th's trouble at t'millMon Nov 11 1991 14:5412
The M1 / M62 junction at Lofthouse (Wakefield) is being dug up, and
there are quite serious delays there in the peak periods.Boundary Park
is easily reached from the M62 westbound, the M6122 (?) turnoff for Oldham
is clearly signposted (Oldham / Middleton) - it's the first major
turning going downhill - Boundary park's floodlights are visible from
the this short motorway. Pubs - there are lots, selling proper beer at
a price to make Southerners jealous.

Approaching from the West (M6, M62) is not reccommended because of
major roadworks on the M62 in the Radcliffe area (just west of Oldham).

Do you know if it is any good turning off the M1 at Junc 38 and heading
up the A6 to Huddersfield? Then driving through Huddersfield and
eventually picking up the M62 at Junc 23.

Finally does anyone know if there are any roadworks on the M1 north of
Watford Gap and if yes, how bad are they?

Mike,

I expect you would be better off keeping to the M1 and M62 - the Xmas
rush is starting and driving throuugh towns is a drag. Allow plenty of
time for your journey, or take the train, Euston Manchester Picc, bus
to Victoria, 142 Bendy Bus round the Oldham loop.

And a subsidiary question - is Wembley Park Underground still closed? If so,
what's the best way there by train?

102.18Can't remember the ground's nameAYOV29::DCHALLONERFri Aug 06 1993 15:4420
Paul,
You really can't miss it (or do you want to ?)

From memory (a la following Wigan up to ~6 years ago - the old grey
cells are catching up with the hair!) - it is straight down the M6 to
the A525 Newcastle / Stoke exit - bear left. Along the dual
carriageway & you can see the ground (eventually!) on your left. Its
a bit like Villa's (don't know who copied who?) but the floodlights are
in the "P" & "V" shapes.

There is (as has been pointed out on numerous occasions in this
conference!) no such place as P.V. - they play in Hanley, one of the 5
Pottery towns. Not a bad ground. Quite large, few friendly pubs near
by. Not that that is of any relevance ;-)

Be wary of the Thelwall though, on your journey!

Enjoy the game,
Dave

Cheers Dave,

I phoned Port Vale and they said drive to Burslem and then ask
someone....... frightening, they probably thought anyone with a slight
Liverpool accent can't read.

I can almost see the Thelwall from here (Warrington CSC)- it's hell.
