99.1Must we have Celtic in it ?ULYSSE::BREADIEFri Sep 27 1991 14:5726
    ok Here is my sixpence worth, based on football standard but also with
    some thought on stadia and support levels.

    MUST BE IN:- {14}
    -----------
    RANGERS MAN UTD SPURS NOTTS FOR
    ABERDEEN		ARSENAL		LIVERPOOL       man city
    HEARTS		LEEDS		EVERTON
    celtic		CHELSEA		VILLA

    POSSIBLES:-  {10}
    ---------
    DUNDEE UTD SHEFF WED	PALACE QPR NEWCASTLE
    HIBS		SUNDERLAND	COVENTRY	HAMMERS
    ST JOHNSTONE

    NEVER EVER:- {15}
    ------------
    FALKIRK		WIMBLEDON	LUTON		NOTTS C
    AIRDRIE		SHEFF UTD	NORWICH		OLDHAM
    MOTHERWELL		SOUTH'TON	HAMMERS		WARTFORD
    DUMFERMLINE		NORWICH
    ST MIRREN

    Seems a fair answer ?

    I'm at a loss to see how Sunderland & newcastle make the 'possiblers'.
    Why should support levels have anything to do with it? If you are good
    enough, you're in.
99.3Hell will freeze over first !!!!SCOAYR::BCOUGHTRIEFri Sep 27 1991 15:2423
    Denis, you've mentioned HAMMERS twice, once as a definite no-no, are we
    to assume that you mean hammerTHROWERS for the latter, such as Sourpuss
    described. (not meaning himself, of course)

    My personal opinion is that there will NEVER be a British league
    set-up, there would be too many complications with respect to their
    inclusion in the Euro club tournaments, i.e. there may still be other
    so called smaller leagues within each country, run by their FA'S.

    How would this operate in Euro qualification, would there be British
    league representatives as well as Irish (North), Welsh, English and
    Scottish ?
    After all, the other clubs not included in the British league would
    still be operating, and be governed by their own FA's, therefore they
    have every right to consideration for qualification to Euro
    tournaments.

    Apart from anything, it could'nt really be construed as a British
    league, since, as yet, there appears to be no scope for the inclusion of
    Welsh and Northern Irish clubs.

                                                     Brian.

99.5British Cup?...EAYV01::GLEROYMon Dec 16 1991 13:256
    What about, as an alternative, an annual fixture permanently at
    Wembley, between either the Scottish and English cup holders for
    the British Cup, or between the respective league champions for
    a British Championship!

    He is the Chairman at Reading. He announced on Tuesday that he would be
    building us a new stadium that would be capable of holding World Cup
    games and it would be a complex that will include a cinema, hotel and
    various sports facilities.....Watch this space (or note 38).

    A couple of seasons back both Newcastle and Sunderland were invited by
    5 teams North of the border to make a Super League. Nothing ever came
    of it in the end.

    I would prefer to have two divisions in the league, each consisting of
    18 teams, with a two up two down relegation/promotion and scrap the
    playoffs. I would also use the rest of the leagues (Eng 1st, Scots 1st
    etc) to have one team promoted to the super league, ie winners of the
    Eng 1st v winners of Scots 1st over two legs, the winners gaining
    promotion.
    My teams for the super league would be:

    Rangers	Celtic Aberdeen	Hearts Dundee Utd
    Man Utd	Liverpool Arsenal Leeds U Tottenham
    Man City	Chelsea Newcastle	Norwich Hibs
    Sunderland	West Ham	Sheff Wed	Wolves Blackburn

    I'd grab a few more of the Scottish teams and a couple of Welsh and
    N.Ireland teams as well to make it more of British Super League.

    However, would we then scrap the FA, SFA, WFA and NIFA? I think not as
    we would lose valuable UEFA votes if we were to form a British FA. As
    it stands now all 4 FA's get a certain amount of votes in UEFA meetings
    and if we were to lose them it could us dearly in Europe.
    Any thoughts anyone??? I know this topic is a little bit outdated but I
    thought I'd try and resurrect(sp?) it.

    Oops, sorry, it wasn't deliberate, honest.
    I'll probably get complaints from Reading fans as well:-)

    With regards to Sunderland, we'll be there by the turn of the century.
    Probably still with the same board and 7 different managers will have
    came and gone. Bennett will still be playing in defence, we'll be
    playing to capacity crowds week in, week out at Roker (should be down
    to about 10k by then) and the board will still be promising to build
    this huge 48,000 all seater stadium in Washington....

    No idea, I just think if we had a couple of teams from Wales in there
    it would help them to improve their game by playing quality opposition
    every week. And besides, we couldn't have a BSL without teams from
    Wales etc. It would be good for football to see someone like
    Cardiff/Swansea giving teams like Man U/Liverpool the run around.

    Oh alright, and Villa. anyone else? Leave me alone, I've had a bad
    day today. Didn't get to have a pint at dinnertime...
    Whats the weather like back home Tim? I think I'll be on the last train
    home tomorrow night. However, going back on the 26th, then hopefully to
    Bolton on the 27th.

    Rich, the weather's quite bad. There's a little snow where I live and
    it's too cold and wet to play football (thrown in, just to keep the mods
    happy).
