In Portugal 3 weeks ago we had 60,000 at Porto, 45,000 at Benfica
and 13,000 at Braga (playing against Sporting). Every other game
had crowds of 3 to 8 thousand. Take away Benfica Porto and Sporting
and its hard to imagine how other teams can afford to meet expenses.
Second division game attendance was even worst.

Gate at Liverpool game on Saturday 32,917
Average so far this season is 30,500
There should be a new stand built during Summer 1992, to be finished in
time for the 1993-1994 season, Elland Rd capacity will then be 40,000,
all seater.

Re .-1
You could say the same about Scotland, take away the Celtic and
Rangers home gates and the crowds can average pretty low.e.g.These
games against each other are usually sell outs i.e.44,000 at Ibrox
last season and around the 55 to 60,000 mark at Celtic Park.
But ground size/limit in Scotland is pretty low.
St Johnstone - 10,000 capacity
Hearts - 23,000 " "
Falkirk - 10,000 " "
That's all I can remember off hand although Ibrox is being upgraded
to the 55,000 mark this season I think.
p.s. Bo'ness United - 3,000 capacity

Average gates in the Swedish league is 3-4,000. Athmosphere is
non-existant. No club attracts significantly more than the others. A
capacity crowd has not been seen for the past 10 years, at least.
Do they deserve better attention? I don't know, I have not been at a
league game since I was a little kid (about Cunno's age, I'd say)
I don't think we'd score well even if the Standard Crowd Size Factor
was considered.

| Rangers average home game has been about 33,000 this season so far,
this is in a current stadium capacity of 36,000, due to construction of
the new 3-tier stand.
The new complete stadium will house 52,000 all-seated.
I'll try and get some accurate info on all other clubs home gates,
normally boosted by the old firm playing.

| Not so good in France, where the 10,000 mark is considered good.
Examples below for the current season:
Team Capacity Average
-------------------------------------------
Paris SG 47,000 28,000
Marseille 49,000 33,000
Metz 30,000 16,000
Lens 40,000 23,000

Monaco 25,000 7,000
Cannes 18,000 8,000
Average this season is 13,000 so far. It usually goes down during the

The above figures are guesses supported by regular reading of France
Football. They should not be too much off the mark.

Approximately 55,000 fans watched the 9 First Division clubs in action
last night in the Rumbelows (League) Cup - that's an appalling average
of only just over 6,000.
Wimbledon again took the biscuit as just 2,081 turned up at Selhurst
Park to see them lose 2-1 to Peterborough.

Mind you, even the Mega-Huge club from Merseyside only managed a paltry
8,000 odd - Excuses please Watto ?

TSV 1860 have an average crowd of 25,000+ this season. In four home
matches so far about 105,000 turned up. (Second Bundesliga)
Ground capacity was about 32,000/35,000 but because of security reasons
only 28,000 are allowed to get in. I've been to a match one and a half
year ago, when 35,000 still were allowed and in fact attended the
match (third Division). It was so packed and it was not comfortable to
stand because we didn't have much place to stand.
I don't know the exact attendances of Bundesliga sides but I remember
last year something like:
Borussia Dortmund: 37,000 (44,000)
Bayern: 34,000 (70,000)
If interested I can look it up how it was exactly.
I also know that it is/was hard to attend a St. Pauli home match since
ground capacity is only 20,000 and nearly all matches were sold out.
Average attendance of normal second Bundesliga sides is about
6,000.

| funny......
I was in the Luton record crowd (30,069, since you ask) v. Blackpool in
a 6th-round cup replay in 1959....those were the days....
I was also at the Luton v. Chelsea game just before New Year (me and
Mr.Major), at which the crowd was announced as just over 10,000,
all-ticket.
With my poor eyesight, I reckoned the place was just as full this time
as it was back in '59, albeit a mite more comfortable. Even if they
beat Liverpool every week nowadays, they couldn't cram many more in.
This being so, I reckon an average gate of 9,068 is 90% of capacity,
and not to be sneezed at.
Aatchoooo.

Hearts v Airdrie
Scottish cup final replay. crowd 11,000.
OK....it was on SKY tv and the weather was bad, but surely Hearts can
muster 11,000 fans by themselves. Haven't a clue about Airdrie's
support or population. This is not a dig at Hearts or Airdrie, but are
live tv games, midweek, going to kill crowds at games.
Does anyone else have any figures as to live games on tv as opposed to
games not on tv. Remember to take weather into consideration because
some fans won't go if it's raining or cold anyway.
Midweek.
H v A SFAcup semifinal replay 11,000. weather : terrible. Live : yes.
If someone could enter league crowds for this tie then we will see if
there's any difference. Sorry, but don't know the crowd for the first
game, it was the usual saturday game though.

I take it you only noticed the crowd size for two games Charlie...????
Celtics average gate was 21-22,000 it would have been far less if they
didn't have 2 55,000 complete sell out games against Rangers.
Rangers ( IBROX capacity 43,000 ) had an average of 36-37,000.
