OSS is clear for Euro-92. Now, whats OSS?

OSS is tormer USSR, the manager Vjateslav Kolaskov konfirmed yesterday
that OSS (USSR) is coming to Sweden.

About Yugoslavia, nothing is decided yet. There will be some meetings
before the drawing next sunday to decide weather Yugoslavia or Denmark
    will participate.

BTW, there will be no domestic games on Ullevi before Euro-92, so the
pitch will be green and nice. Ullevi is actually called Nya Ullevi (New
Ullevi) and there is a Gamla Ullevi (Old Ullevi) as well. Gamla Ullevi
is about 500 meters away from Nya Ullevi, and it will be used for
    practice during the tournament.

    Gentlemen,

This afternoon 16.00 local time, the drawing for Euro-92 will take
place. Nils Liedholm will make the drawing, and i hope that hes kind to
    us. My wish is;

    Stockholm/Malmo Gothenburg/Norrkoping

    Sweden Holland
    France England
    Yugoslavia Scotland
    USSR (OSS) Germany

Sweden beated Yugoavia 4-3 on September 4.th last year, and that was
probably the last time that Cratians and Serbians (sp?) played together.
Dispite the romours, Yugoslavia got a green ligt from UEFA last night.
USSR (OSS in Swedish, what is it in English?) have Sweden played good
against the last years. I hope France and Sweden makes it to the semis.
Then i wan't Holland in the semi and Germany or England in the final.
    Any wishes out there?

I don't mind which group we will be drawn in as there aren't weak teams
one can underestimate. And I think our team is strong enough to compete
    with the best.

I'm very interested in France's performance against this opposition
after dominating their qualification group so perfectly. They must be
in a good form. (should be a good semifinalist for us :-), :-))

Latest reports says that all games exept the semi-finals are sold out.
There are a few hundred tickets available for those two semis. There
will be an extra release of tickets on the 21st of April if the Swedish
Football association gets any in return. Most of the non-Swedish
tickets have gone to different travelling agencys around europe, and
there is some returns expected from countries like Italy, Switzerland
    and Ireland...

where you can convert it in to tickets.

It will be a hard time for us CS engineers during the tournament. The
Digital building is nearly in the safety-zone, and many streets around
us will be sealed off. Our parkinglot will surely be filled up.The

Not one British referee has been appointed to referee in Sweden during
the championships. 15 Refs have been chosen. No explanation from FIFA but
it's generally agreed that the Brits have become too lenient on physical
challenges and too petty on technical issues. Has the British press
anything to say about it ?

    > Brits have become too lenient on physical challenges

In Britain we generally dont have players leaping 15 feet in the air
screaming for fouls everytime an opposing player is in the same half, as
occurs in a lot of other countries. It seems to me that European
referees are a little too whistle-happy in such situations.
So i wouldnt say that British referees are lenient, they just dont
stand for any nonsense from the 'fouled' player.

I enjoy watching the skill and flair produced by the Southern
continental footballers, ie, Italy, France and Spain et cetera.
The thing is, an Italian football match for example actually
takes 120 minutes to play a 90 game simply due to the amount
of time players spend rolling around on the ground and general
time wasting at free kicks and giving the ref a mental time
    over every decision he makes.

I would say that the REFs on the continent have a much harder time
    of things.

As well as a certain Hughes, Looneypool have Ronnie 'The Sub'
Rosenthal, who is an expert at diving in or around the area towards the
end of the game, especially whwn the Scousers are losing. He attempted
to do this at Elland Road, but was thwarted by the fact that he had to
be around the penalty area to do this, he had problems getting into the

In football there is a very strong definition what you are allowed to
do on the field and what you are not allowed to do. When i watch
English football on saturday afternoons, i often wonder how players can
get away with their tackles. In Britain you want to play a physical
type of football, and the referees accepts it. That's the name of the
game for you, and therefor you don't lie on the ground five minutes every
    time you get hurt.

I think that FIFA (and UEFA) has come to the conclution that football
has reached a level where the brutality is not longer acceptable. The
new rules about sending offs clearly says that players should not make
fouls on players who gets free from their defenders. In my opinion,
British football is unnessecary hard some times, and makes talented
players afraid to dribble. The goal we all loved most in the WC-86 was
Maradona's goal against England, when he dribbled the whole English
defense. We all love players, and personally i hate defenders who tackles
from behind and berries a forward 3 feet down in the ground.

What im trying to say is that international referees must be harder and
"whistle-happy" to prevent ugly play. I don't know much about English
referees, but those i have seen this season has been surprisingly poor.

    re last..

I disagree with you about Barnes, but the other 2 aren't British so I
think you should be agreeing with the other noters who hinted that this
type of infuriating display of pretend injury seems to be an European
    stlye playing disease..
Plus how many times have you seen English referees ignore the
supposedly injured player and demand the continuation of play (even if
he has won the free kick). The player seems to miraculously recover,
it must be seen as a better cure for serious injury then the "magic
    sponge"..

On the point raised about Maradonna's goal I think you will find that
the referees protection of such a player gave him a tackle free run at
our goal.. Earlier in the game Fenwick was booked when Maradonna and
ball ran straight into him (this meant Fenwick would miss the next
game if we progressed). Bearing this in mind I think the English
defence were frightened to challenge the little cheat (oooops),thus
letting him score. Next time you see the goal on TV take a close look
at the amount of players within tackling range all the way through his
    run !!

Furthermore, would (should) Gazza have been booked if the German player
and bench hadn't have made such a hoo haar about his challenge. In
England he would have been walking a fine line for the challenge but
referees are more likely to give him a stern talking to and warned him
the next time he steps out of line he will leave him no choice but to
    reach for the cards...

Re .24, Mats, I have to agree with you. Irrespective of all the 'acting' that
goes on, English football has allowed the physical to rule over the football.
That can easily be seen by the number of 'exciting' players we have in English
(and Scottish?) football. Hardly any. Even our most exciting talent manages to
cripple himself by proving his 'commitment'.

There's definitely a place for physical challenge in football, but in England
it's been taken just too far. Wish I knew how we could get back to a less
agressive style . . .

Tullio Lanese, Italy

Who will referee what game will be decided later. Some ot these name are very
familiar to me. Schmidhuber, Rthlisberger and Galler are all experiensed
referees. Bo Karlsson has a good international reputation, the game between
Marseille and Milan last year(?) handled he good when Milan refused to play
the last minutes. There will be referee-teams on all games, so the refs will
bring along their mates as linesmen.
