Tomorrow sees the Saints in action against the mighty Forest at the
Dell. The three points are vital because teams above us all seem to be
winning. We need the cup form.

The Bolton game has now been switched to Sunday and is all ticket. Try
and get your ticket tomorrow if you've got the cash.

The fans must get behind the team, not slag them off every minute.
Results ain't going our way but the teams doing their best.

    Cheers

    > Is football as entertaining as it used to be?

Probably not, but Southampton's situation is more to do with a change
of manager and an entirely different approach to the game. During their
good run, Soton won a lot of games 1 - 0 which is typical for a
Branfoot team; during his reign at Reading, the third division title
was secured on the back of numerous 1 - 0 victories.

Solid defence, soak up the pressure, score on the odd breakaway - the
    Branfoot method.

| | Prospects are not looking too good, Alan Shearer has left to join
Blackburn Rovers for a massive salary, the fee is rumoured to be
approx 3.5 million. Neil Ruddock has joined Spurs for 750,00 pounds and
Barry Horne has joined Everton for 650,000 pounds. Saints have signed David
Speedie from Blackburn and Kerry Dixon from Chelsea, it looks as though
Branfoot is planning for the future there as both are over thirty. We
definately need a constructive midfielder to go alongside the
destructive talents of Terry Hurlock and probably need a fullback and a
central defender, unfortunately now that clubs know we have three
million to spend we are going to be quoted silly prices for average
    players.

Tony, maybe you'd like to read 46.80.

I didn't go on Saturday (Still doshless, after all these years - does
anyone have a balaclava and shotgun I can borrow? :-)), but from what
was said on the radio and reported in the papers it wasn't a great game.
Southampton took the lead after about 15 minutes. Arsenal apparently
didn't do much until the 37th minute when Campbell hit the post.
Wright should have put the rebound away, but he hit it high, wide and not
very handsome. 1-0 to the Saints at half-time.

About ten minutes into the second-half Southampton increased their
lead, Dowie at the far post I think. Arsenal had a couple of chances
to get back into it, in particular a Merson lob which was well saved by
Flowers. At this stage I believe Wright and Monkou were 'having a few
words' (and then some!). I think Wright got booked, again.

With five minutes to go Parlour was pulled down in the penalty area.
Wright hit the resulting penalty against the bar. I think Arsenal had
the opportunities to get something from the game but probably deserved
    what they got, nothing.

    	Easy, Paul...

Down the M3 to Winchester. Straight through the Hockley Lights
(snigger....sorry, but if you drive through 'em every day you'll
know what I mean..), carry on down the A33, go past the Eastleigh
turn-off (it's three lanes here), avoid following the M27 westbound
towards Bournemouth (get in the middle lane), take left A33
Southampton (carry on at your peril onto the M27 Eastbound)

Follow the A33 in towards Southampton. Go past the University -
this road is known as "the avenue". When you see signs for the
Eye Hospital to turn right and follow them. The ground is about
mile away (can't miss it!!), park wherever you can.

All that from not a Saints fan...

Good luck (the ground is a DUMP!)

Beware if you do turn right off the Avenue - there's one grotty little
car park that seems to fill up by about 1:30 and no other roadside
parking. I always used to turn left off the Avenue (you'll see the turn
off that Andy's talking about, there's a pub and park on the right)
into one of the side streets - there's a few pubs round there and it's
a lot easier to get back onto the Avenue after the game. It's about a
10-15 minute walk to the ground, but there's no pubs near the ground
that you can get into before the game.

This pub, which you can't miss but the name escapes me, has a
reasonable-sized car park. A couple of mates and I always park in it,
have a few jars in the pub, then walk down to the ground. It's then
easy to turn left out of the car park onto the main road and head off
    for the M3.

We are currently planning are yearly weekend trip to the coast and are
planning to come to the Blackburn v Southampton game on 16 April
    (providing SKY don't switch it).

We will be travelling from Blackburn on Friday afternoon (12 of us at
present), and are planning to stop in Bounemouth on Friday and Saturday
    nights.

We will then catch the train to Southampton on Saturday for some
serious drinking and then go to the match.

As most of us are season ticket holders at Ewood, obtaining match
tickets shouldn't be to much trouble but we have a couple of questions
    that need answering;

    1)	How many tickets do visitors get at the DELL these days and are
these all seated or do you still have terraces available.

    2)	How far is the train station from the ground and are there plenty
    	of pubs on the way.

Regarding the game, alot will happen between now and then and from our
point of view it will either be a nothing sort of game (too far behind
United, 2nd place secured) or it will be a hell of a game (Still able
to catch United). I hope from your point of view it will be a nothing
sort of game (ie: your away from the relegation zone.)

I saw the on SKY last night and I thought Soton played very well last
night against L'pool and deserved the win.

    Regards
    Stephen

The train station is about a 10 minute walk from the
Dell, down a road called Hill Lane, I think!! You
get a reasonable amount of tickets and being season
ticket holders you should be alright.

| | Stephen,

Yes, the Dell is about 10 mins walk from the station, but I don't
think that it is called Hill Lane, but come out of the station
as if by car, turn immediately left at the Station Traffic Lights, then
right at the next set of lights. Archers Road (The Away Supporters
End) is then about 5 mins walk on the right. Away supporters are all
seated either at the Archers Road end or the Upper East Stand.

There are no pubs on the way. If your going from Bournemouth I suggest
that you get an early train. The city centre is only 15 mins walk from
the station at So'ton, so you could find plenty of pubs there.

    Keith.

Up here (Scotland), clubs who have been promoted to the Premier

They've got a lot of youngsters so perhaps they need to buy in a
a couple of the more-experienced playes knocking around - players like
Houghton, Townsend etc. With the 7/8/9m quid they could get for Le
Tiss, Soton might not fair too badly out of the deal.

One thing that does surprise me (providing all this is true), is that
Soton haven't attempted to involve clubs like Newcastle, Blackburn,
Liverpool, Utd etc. I'm sure the bidding would probably go to the
9-10m mark, were these teams involved.

of the competition, and Middlesbrough are no certainties to end the
second division side's dream in the semi-final, for all their
millionaire status. Stockport's band of veterans and young tyros cost
about 400,000, a fraction of the money spent on Teesside.

These may be absurd heights for a side of Stockport's limited history
and pretensions, but they are no strangers to the Twin Towers, having
reached two finals of the Autoglass Trophy and the play-offs twice in
the past decade. But Stockport for the Coca-Cola Cup final? They will
certainly not be overawed by the sight of Juninho, Ravanelli and Co.
"We will look forward to it," David Jones, the Stockport manager, said.
"They've said this would be the easiest draw for them and, to be
honest, the semi-final is a final for this club."

Though Southampton were woeful, despite Le Tissier's solo attempts to
win this replay, nothing should be taken away from County, who absorbed
the shock of an early goal, kept their composure and, slowly but
surely, pushed Southampton back. The crowd at The Dell acknowledged
that justice had been done. As Stockport celebrated wildly at the final
whistle, they roundly jeered their own side before rising to applaud
    the winners off the field.

"It's not like we just hung on, we took the game to them," Jones said.
"We were sloppy for the first ten minutes and were a little bit
nervous." Yet, playing their fourteenth cup-tie of the season, and
their fifth game in 15 days, it was Stockport who looked the stronger
    and steadier of the sides.

There have been times when Graeme Souness, the Southampton manager,
would have reacted to such an ignominous defeat with a flurry of anger,
but he is a calmer character these days, and his judgment was generous
and accurate. "I have no complaints," he said. "They were better than
us because, believe it or not, we had too many players who froze on the
    night."

History of sorts was made by one of the referee's assistants. Wendy
Toms, a postal worker from Poole, has run the line in the Nationwide
League, but became the first woman to be elevated to this level. A goal
by Andy Mutch eight minutes from time sealed Stockport's piece of
history. But the writing was on the wall for the Premiership side well
    before then.

Southampton had only themselves to blame. They had the perfect start
when Le Tissier, who was fitfully brilliant, chested down Neilson's
diagonal cross before volleying left-footed past Jones, but seemed to
sit back and allow Stockport to recover their relentless rhythm.

Aware that Southampton's defence was eminently suspect, they simply
collected their thoughts and pushed forward, playing well within
themselves, although it was not until the 62nd minute that the
equaliser came, Angell advancing to slide the ball under Beasant.

Southampton continued to rely on Le Tissier, both in defence and
attack. The England international cleared off his line and, moments
later, forced Jones to scramble to his left with a right-foot shot from
30 yards. Once level, though, Stockport looked comfortably the more
sure-footed. Le Tissier, again, brought the best out of Jones with a
free-kick from fully 35 yards, but proved only the prelude to the final
    thrust by Stockport.

Momentarily caught flat-footed and square, the Southampton defence
allowed the nippy Armstrong to outpace them to a long through-ball by
Flynn. The young striker's shot was partially blocked by Beasant, but
it ran to Mutch, who had only to touch the ball home from two yards.
Mutch had been on the field for barely a minute.

"I was joking with him before he went on," Jones said. "I said I would
give him a ride in my new car if he scored the winner for me." Jones,
it seems, has a new sponsored car, but, as yet, no contract. "I've
never worked with a contract. A handshake with the chairman at the
start of the season has always been good enough for me." The chairman
might think otherwise now. Jones is proving an adept and skilled young
    manager.

As for Souness, he can only pick up the pieces of defeat in time for
the visit to Old Trafford on Saturday. "If you feel you're getting
everything from your players, you can go home happy. I'm going home a
very unhappy man tonight," he said. There will be no peace for him
there, either. His wife, Karen, was crowned Miss Stockport 1979.

Not necessary. Stockport where the better side last night and fully
deserved to win. Dispite going one down they always had the look about
them that they would win. They where patient and the deserved goals
came.
Middlesborough will have play better than they often have of late to get
passd them.

| | Fair play to Stockport! A little bit of history was played out on Sky
last night, and the deserving team came out winners in the end. Andy
Mutch scoring in 15 seconds (OK, it may well have been going in anyway,
but what the heck!) was excellent. Even the Soton fans were applauding
the opposing team off the pitch!

I thought that was very good of them. After a couple minutes of booing the
Southampton players of the pitch the whole crowd stood and applauded Stockport
who in return did a mini lap of honour and applauded the Southampton fans.
Good stuff!

Southampton midfielder Matt Le Tissier will play in tomorrow's crunch
relegation battle at Nottingham Forest after making a sufficient recovery from a
foot injury.
Le Tissier has been troubled by the problem since the end of January, but a
two week lay-off has helped the Saints star.

|  | Off Soccernet;
David Webb and Queen Park Rangers assistant manager Bruce Rioch emerged as front-runners for
the vacant manager's job at Southampton today, writes Ken Dyer, of the London Evening
Standard.
It is rumoured the south coast club have, already made an official approach to Brentford for
Webb, a former Southampton player
Graeme Souness resigned as Southampton manager last month and the club have been searching
for a replacement since then.
It is not the first time that Webb has been coveted by the Premiership club.
Southampton were keen on appointing Webb as manager two seasons ago but he turned down the
move then and decided to stay at Brentford.

West Ham tonight revealed the double signing of Israel international Eyal Berkovic for
1.75million from Southampton and QPR's Andy Impey in a 1.2m deal.
Berkovic has signed a five-year contract and travelled to London today from the Israeli
training camp to put pen-to-paper.
Impey, an England Under-21 international, has signed for four years and QPR could yet net a
further 200,000 if certain criteria are met.
Sunday, June 1 1997
Southampton will offer Matthew Le Tissier a one-year extension to his contract as they step
up their search for a successor to Graeme Souness.
Souness quit as boss last week claiming he could not take the club further but Saints
chairman Rupert Lowe has promised the new man will have 5million to spend.
A shortlist headed by ex-Everton boss Joe Royle and which also includes Ray Wilkins and Kevin
Keegan has been drawn-up.
But Saints are desperate to hang on to Le Tissier, 28, who has been linked with both Spurs
and Chelsea.
They are now ready to hand him an extension to his contract, which has one year to run, to
underline their faith in him.
One player definitely following Souness out of the Dell door is Israeli international Eyal
Berkovic - a target for West Ham - and the Saints won't get a penny for the 2m-rated
midfielder.
He is out of contract with the South Coast side and was signed by Souness on a lease-back
agreement with his Israeli outfit Maccabi Haifa.
Spurs were on the brink of signing the Saints ace but pulled out at the last minute after
deciding to move for Crewe starlet Danny Murphy.
The Saints Board-elect are bracing themselves for protests from fans who want them to resign.
That is unlikely with Lowe maintaining the new manager will have funds to spend.
Southampton are also looking for a football director to replace Lawrie McMenemy who joined
Souness in quitting.
