    Well we got the start we didn't need beaten 1-0 by Man City. According
    to yesterday's paper Gynn could have had a couple only for excellant 
    Goalkeeping by the unknown Man City Keeper.

    After the poor performances of the Sky Blues in their pre-season games
    in Scotland all the fans are probably in hiding !

    Lets get this note up and running (however slowly) again. We are 6th
    in the league with a very good goal diff' (for a change) and we have
    equaled our away win record of last season.
    
    This weekend we have Notts County at Highfield Rd, lets hope we can
    put a few past them and climb further up the table.
    
    Butcher reckons he will soon be challanging for the centre half spot.

    Well another win under our belts. I saw the goal on Sky News and it
    looked scrappy enough, with Paul Furlong getting the final touch.
    
    Scrappy or not we got the 3 points and are in 4th position. If we
    beat Leeds on Wed (at home) then we will go second.
    
    Lloyd McGrath has come off the transfer list. Butcher is interested
    in signing Paul Devlin from Stafford Rangers. Souness turned the 18
    year old down because the asking price was too high, 100k was reported.

    We got well beaten by Everton on Saturday. From the paper I read 
    The Hunch back was lucky with a couple of his goals. 
    
    Butcher would need to rally his troups because there isn't much
    between us and 4th and 5th from the bottom.

    We put 4 past Rochdale. Rosario with 2 and Gallagher and McGrath.
    This should see us safely through to the next round. Lets hope
    we can go one better this time i.e. final and then we will think about

    According to yesterdays paper we were all over Villa in the first
    half with Nldovu getting an excellant goal. He ran rings around
    1.5m Staunton.
    
    Second half was a different story with Villa having enough chances to
    win. Oggy got man of the match.
    
    We are not playing well, but we are still getting the right results.

    We continued our success in London this season with an excellant
    Away win at West Ham. According to the paper we were well on top
    with Stuart Robson playing a stormer against his old club. Kevin
    Gallagher got the all important goal which keeps us well in contention.

    Thanks for all the updates, Tom.  I managed to catch the (elusive)
    summary of the English league games on Italian TV this week.  The goal
    against West Ham was a good one, made again by Ndlovu.  I'm embarrassed
    we paid only 10,000 pounds for him ...
    
    I'm not surprised Gallacher was left out of the Scottish squad.  He's
    been called up for the last couple of games but I don't think he's even
    been named as substitute.  And anyway someone's got to make way for new
    blood like Aitken.

    Yes, Andy, it was a disappointing result on Saturday.  The Sky Blues
    really need to pick up points against these middle of the table sides. 
    The Sunday Times said it was a pretty miserable game, so I don't think
    the Liverpool revival has started.  Apart from the scrambled goal it
    took them an hour to get a shot on target.  I don't know if Coventry
    actually managed a shot - but this was doubtless due to a policy of
    European-style "containment".  
    
    (Insert smiley faces liberally through this last paragraph.)
    
    So, two successive defeats in the league, and the heartache of tumbling
    out of the ZDS cup!  Things could start getting really exciting by
    Christmas ... when I'll doubtless catch a game at Highfield Road and
    wonder who half of the players are.

    It could have been worse. We might have got a draw and got into replays
    which we don't need this season with 42 league matches, potentially 8
    more European Cup matches plus the FA Cup not to mention International
    matches for our players. Anyway, the Rum Cup is even less important
    than it used to be as it doesn't provide the winners a UEFA place.

    A friend recently gave me a tape with, among other things, the match
    last year between Coventry City and Notts Forest in the Rumbelows Cup.
    This was the game where a first-half hat trick by Kevin Gallagher put
    the Sky Blues up 4-0, then Nigel Clough had a hat trick of his own, the
    last one coming 2 minutes befor the half, to make it 4-3. Forest tied
    it in the second half, but Coventry finally won, 5-4. Great game!
    
    One of the beter players for Coventry was Cyrille Regis, number 9. He
    also seemed to be in the thick of most of Coventry's goals on the
    "Goals of the Week" highlights from other games that was also on the
    tape. I never see his name mentioned here, so I was wondering if he'd
    been sold off. He seemed like the kind of player who could make a lot
    happen, both with the ball and away from the ball. Anyone know what
    happened to him or why Coventry decided to let him go?

    Big Cyrille went to Aston Villa on a free transfer - I saw him at
    Goodison a few weeks back and he was outstanding (unfortunatly !)

    Yep, one of the most under-rated forwards in England some years ago.

    So, the question is why did they release him on a free transfer?  
    
    I think is was probably because he was one of the players most closely
    associated with the previous management, and was considered a problem
    by Butcher.  Cyrille was appointed player/coach by Sillett, and a lot
    of people expected him to eventually become manager.  (This was the
    short-lived attempt to appoint from within and mimic Liverpool.  Ahem.)
    
    Butcher brought in his own people (like the silkily skilled Mick Mills)
    and so I guess he wanted Cyrille out.  
    
    No game tomorrow, so another week to wait before we find out if we can
    extend our run of three successive league defeeats.  The league cup may
    be the highlight of the season.  It was very satisfying to beat Arsenal
    again.  I just hope Spurs don't play the negative game I saw them play
    against Porto last night.  And I hope they aren't as lucky again.  (I
    had the misfortune to watch this terrible game of football last night.)

    Re last few, Big Cyrille was a great favourite at Highfield Rd and
    I was certainly sorry to see him go.

    We suffered another defeat on Saturday, this is becoming quite common
    of late. According to yesterday's paper we were well and truly beaten,
    only for Oggy the score would have been massive. He even saved a
    penalty.
    
    The final score was 1-0 nil to Forrest.

    One bit of good news reported in the paper IMO, Mick Mills has been
    sacked along with Brian Eastick. I never rated Mills either as a manager
    or a coach. INMO only for Butcher he would never have ended up at
    Highfield Rd. Paper reports it was new chairman Robbins rather than
    Butcher who ordered the sacking, could Terry be next?????????

    OH MY GOD! I thought/hoped we'd seen the back of that imbecile for
    good! Then all of a sudden the designer in chief, of the bionic hoof
    returns! Poor old Coventry fans!

    It was one bright item in a gloomy day when I found out that Mick
    "Silky" Mills was on his way down to the DHSS.  It really cheered me
    up.  (By the way, who is Brian Eastick, and why haven't we heard of him
    before?)
    
    That little bit of brightness has sparkled and died with the news that
    Don Howe is the new coach.  As Terry Butcher appointed Mick Mills (and
    may know who Brian Eastick is and what he did) he may be the lucky
    recipient of some management "help".
    
    Don Howe.  Good grief.  It's bad enough supporting a team which isn't
    that rich and successful.   Now imagine if that team plays industrial
    strength football and the midfield are reduced to watching the ball fly
    over their heads.  It's a trial, eh?

    Read the other day that Butcher is interested in signing Gordon
    Cowens from Villa to link up with Robson in the middle of the park.
    
    I would be delighted if this came through as I believe Cowens is a
    great passer of a ball and this is where the Sky Blues have been
    lacking for quite a while. We seem to have plenty of industry but
    not a lot of skill in midfield.

    Southampton. Yesterdays Mirror stated that Butcher is putting �3m

    sprinkling of irony.  The word "magic" has a dusting of that; see the

    My Cov contacts tell me that Terry Butcher has been given the full
    support and backing of the board.  I thought chairmen stopped doing

    I saw a report of the Manchester game eventually, and it made
    depressing reading.  Quite apart from the result, the "physical"
    attitude we displayed is a concern.  Plus, no Stuart Robson, no Peter
    Ndlovu.  Howe magic, indeed.
    
    The Football League (bless 'em) have conspired to give us away games on
    the Saturdays either side of crimbo *and* on Boxing Day, so it's
    unlikely I'll get to see a game when I'm back.  At the moment I'm not
    losing sleep over it.

    Terry Butcher has been sacked - Don Howe will take charge of the team
    until the end of the season.

    That old "vote of confidence" never fails, does it?
    
    Butcher was apparently fired because he refused to renegotiate his
    contract which said he was a player/manager.  (He played just 6 times
    last season, and nearly once this (he got sent off) so they had a point
    ...)   But we all know it was an excuse.
    
    The Christmas record was less than thrilling.  Butcher said he couldn't
    get the players to listen to him and do what he wanted them to do.  If
    that isn't an admission of defeat I don't know what is.   The problem
    is really that he used 30 players last season and getting on to that
    amount already this season.  He didn't know his best team.
    
    It's hard defending Don Howe as manager so I won't even try.

    	No he didn't.It was a hilarious own goal by one of the Coventry
    defenders.Dublin had his penalty shot saved by Ogrizovic & as it
    rebounded out en route to Dion Dublin,said defender comes rushing in,
    beats Dublin to the ball & smashes the ball straight into the empty
    net when it was probably easier to hoof it away.The rest of the

    Some third hand news: Don Howe says Coventry will play like Milan.  He
    also says he has always believed in good football and promoted it. 
    Everyone still keeping a straight face?
    
    On reflection Coventry and Milan have lots in common:
    
    Neither teams made expensive signings last summer
    Both teams have changed manager this year
    Milan are clear at the top of the Italian league, and Coventry are in a
    different country
    In the 1970s Coventry had a kit (away) that featured black stripes
    Both teams play with 11 players, though Coventry often only do so
    nominally
    That's all.
    
    What his comment really means is that when Coventry lose to (say)
    Cambridge, like Milan they will have played without a sweeper.

    Good win for the Sky Blues against Palace on Saturday. Smith got
    the all important goal. We are unbeaten in London this season. 
    
    Lets hope for the same scoreline against Liverpool next Saturday, which
    incidentally, will be shown live here in Ireland.

    Well an exciting match agaainst Liverpool on Saturday. Not great
    football but non-stop end to end stuff. Sky Blues should have been 2
    up at half time, Rosario against the cross-bar and Gallacher denied by
    Grobalaar (sp). Second half, if we had a centre forward with a bit of
    pace we would have had them dead and buried before they got their
    golden chance, Oggy making a great stop from Walters. The last chance
    fell to Gallachar who blased over the bar from 2 yards. Two points
    droppedather than 1 gained is how I see it.
    
    Rosario is crap no speed no penetration what so ever. Gallacher was
    good but tended to let decisions get to him. Flynn is a very good
    prospect on the right wing. All in all Coventry fought till the end
    but lack a centre forward.

    Thanks for the report, Tom.  I was hoping that the game was going to be
    on live here in Italy, as we normally get the same live English game as
    the rest of Europe.  Instead we got tennis, just for a change.  There
    must have been several hours this last month when I couldn't watch
    tennis.  Sigh.
    
    Both reports I read said that we were easily the better team, so I had
    a wry smile at some of those "two points dropped" comments in the
    liverpool note.  
    
    I don't think bringing back Mr Drinkell is the answer to missing
    chances.  His confidence was pretty well shot last season.  Keith
    Furlong was getting goals earlier this season - he may be a better bet. 
    Alternatively we could spend countless millions on players; then we
    could say that injuries are depriving us of the championship.
    
    No game tomorrow, thanks to Cambridge, so the unbeaten run will be
    extended.

    There have been as many notes here over the last month as there have
    been goals scored by the Sky Blues.  After the longest sequence of 0-0
    draws I can recall since the days of Noel Cantwell (cotton shirts,
    players with Mungo Jerry whiskers, 0-0 draw after 0-0 draw) we won at
    Chelsea, lost to Forest and drew with Oldham.
    
    It's hard to get excited, to be honest.  And it's hard to worry about
    relegation with teams like Spurs self-destructing.

    that they beat Tottenham 2-0 away.  Can anyone provide any details or

    I checked the Spurs note, but all it talks about is what cr*p Spurs
    were.  I'd love to get some impressions on the Sky Blues - how they
    played, who looked good and who didn't.  Also something on the opener

    Life after Gazza,Lineker and Stewart is certainly going to prove
    tough for Spurs, Their shot-shy attack might begin to worry the 
    Spurs fans. Spurs had to re-organise their defence after Jason
    Cundy clashed heads with John Williams with only minutes gone
    and had to leave the field. Williams put Coventry ahead from a corner
    on four minutes and then also added to his season total by scoring
    a second in the 29th minute, Spurs could have fallen further behind                      
    but for substitute keeper Erik Thorstvedt saved Micky Gynn's 72 minute
    penalty.

    Coventry still hanging on in there. Drew 1-1 with Norwich on Saturday.
    Main highlight was a very well taken goal by their Zimbabwian discovery
    Ndluvo (Sp?). He seems to be the subject of a lot of praise and it
    would appear that Coventry have struck lucky judging by the way he took
    his goal on MOTD on Saturday.

Did you see the Mick Quinn/Des Lynam interview last night on Sportsnight?
Magic. Quinn looked and talked like one of Harry Enfield's Scousers.
He said that:

    The Sky Blues seem to be on a pretty good run right now.  What can it

Mick Quinn scored all three goals. The first was a penalty after Lee Dixon
obstructed Peter Ndlovu in the box, the second came from a neat back heal by Roy
Wegerlee which found Quinn alone on the right of the box, and the third was
another screaming shot from the right corner of the box. Seaman had no chance
with any of them.

    How much of an impact did Wegerle make?  I was pleased that he had
    signed with Coventry, and his presence in the US squad this summer

    from Willie Boland following a Wegerle(That man again) free kick.
    
    The major controversy was the sending off of Rob Jones following a foul
    on Ndlovu. Souness was quoted "This is the second time a young
    inexperience player(Jones is an England player) has been shown the red
    card at Coventry(Jamie Redknapp was sent off last year).... That's all
    I want to say because I do not wish to be taking a trip to Lancaster

    Apparently Jonathan Gould made a number of superb saves, but the 3
    points went to Coventry.
    
    Coventry are now 4th after 6 games behind Man U, Arsenal and Liverpool

    I've always been a Celtic supporter, but since around 1980 when I 
    started spending my Summers with relatives in Coventry I started
    to blow the trumpet for the Sky Blues.
    
    There's not a lot you can say about Coventry at the moment, I made
    the big mistake of predicting they will qualify for Europe, that
    seems to have given them the kiss of death.
    
    What's up with Quinn these days, does he realise that he has his own
    money on himself to win top scorer ? Is he injured or what ?
    Getting rid of Ndlovo (Sp?) would be their biggest mistake. Having 
    said that, without the likes of Gould behind them there's no hope 
    this season, I can honestly say I believe this is now going to be 
    another one of those years where we are fighting to stay in the 
    premiership.
    
    Maybe I should try to go to some more games. I've only ever been
    to six and we were never defeated. That's going back a few years
    though.
    
    Hoping for something to cheer about in the next few years.

    I saw most of the game yesterday on Sky. It was not a classic by any
    means but there were some nice passages of play from both sides.
    Coventry opened brightly only for all their efforts break down on the
    edge of the Villa box. Villa scored through Daley, he took his goal
    well but our defence was crap in trying to clear the ball. That was
    about the only thing that happened in the first half. Coventry came
    more into it in the second half stringing together some neat football
    only once again to breakdown on the edge of the villa box. Williams
    came back into midfield and this gave us the pace we lacked in the
    first half. In my view we had 2 perfect penalty claims turned down.
    Ndlovu was brought down by Cox and Teale raised his hands above his
    head when Quinn tried to lob the ball over him, the ball clearly hit
    his raised hand. Coventry were unlucky when a rebound off Flynn was
    cleared off the line by Parker with Bosnich stranded. On the whole
    I thought a draw was a fairer result. Team performances for the Sky
    Blues: Williams is not a centre forward, Quinn (lazy) spent his time giving
    out to everyone for making him do a bit of work.  Ndlovu was well
    marked. Of the rest Babb and Rennie did o.k. We badly need a centre
    forward, a midfielder with a lot of bite who can also play a bit, and
    a central defender who can also play. On this performance we will
    continue to struggle to the end of the season (whats new).

    One more win should see us clear of the relegation zone, Ipswich on the
    other hand have been dropped right in it, we were both on 41 before
    this game so it could've been us fighting to stay up rather than
    Ipswich. I can't believe I was so near to Ipswich yesterday and didn't
    get to the game.
    
    First goal scored by Flynn after Ndlove (sp?) had battled his way into
    the Ipswich goal mouth, the ball was knocked out of the box, but fell 
    into Flynns path, he shot low to the keepers right hand side, and there
    was no stopping it. By the time the second goal came I was to far away
    from Ipswich to get a good reception on the car radio, I had to resort
    to the Tottenham/West Ham game, which proved to be fairly good
    listening.

    According to a story in yesterday's USA TODAY, Wegerle has just had a
    second arthroscopic procedure on his knee and will not be returning to
    action until after the Premier League season is over.  He is, however,
    expected to be ready for the World Cup.

    It was reported in the press last weekend that Francis was after him.
    Is he a left-back? I liked the look of your number three when we played 
    at Highfield Rd so I hope it is him. It was reported that he would go
    for 500k, so if he's now gone for over 1 million Neal has done a good bit

    It is bad when your team has to sell it's better players. If it makes

    It is being reported in USA TODAY that US World Cup Team defender Alexi
    Lalas is considering signing with Coventry.  The report says a decision 
    is expected within two weeks.  Lalas was named to the World Cup All

    Well I went to see the Sky Blues play Villa at Highfield road last
    Monday week. A match report can be summed up in one word 'crap'.
    Neither team were any good. Our full-back Morgan had our best effort
    in the 1st half forcing a good save from Bosnich. In the 2nd half we
    had ZERO attempts on goal. Oggy kept hitting high balls up to Flynn
    all 5'6 of him. I will finish with that. 
    Now that Babb is gone we need to purchase a creative midfielder
    and a proven goal scorer. This is our worst start to a season for
    as long as I can remember, lets hope things start to take shape soon
    or we will be left with too much to do when its too late.

    Dion Dublin opened his account for the Sky Blues on Saturday with
    an 84th minute equalizer. A good draw, considering all the goings on
    over the past couple of weeks. I'm looking forward to Ndlovu's return
    from injury and Cobi Jones' debut. These two should supply plenty of
    ammo' for Dion and Wegerlie (sp).
    
    A real tough game on Saturday, home to Leeds Utd. Their tails will be
    well and truly up after Sunday's win over Man Utd. I'd love a win but

    	Cobi Jones got his work permit on account of his incredible hair.
    The PFA were persuaded that such hairstyles "add to the entertainment
    factor of the game and will have the crowds pouring in" (at least, this
    was Cobi's lawyers argument at the PFA hearing).
    	Brad could only base his argument on his claimed "level of skill". As
    he hasn't been allowed near a football since arriving in the UK, he had
    some difficulty proving that he could play football at all. So, Brad
    was turned down at his first hearing but intends to appeal. In the mean
    time he's having intensive treatment on his split ends (including implants)
    and hopes to have something between a Jones & Lalas ready for the
    appeal hearing in 3 weeks.

    We got our first win of the season on Saturday. Dion Dublin scoring
    again and Cook getting one from the spot. By all accounts Cobi Jones
    added much needed pace to our attack. We are away to Wrexham in the CC
    Cup tonight and at home to Southampton on Saturday. Here's hoping
    Dion keeps up the good work.

    Well thats the 1st leg of the CC cup out of the way. A lucky 2-1 to
    the Sky Blues with Flynn and Darby getting the all important goals.
    This may have been asked earlier but here goes ' do away goals count
    double in this competition. 
    
    We have a tough game against Southampton on Saturday at home. The
    Saints are doing fairly well for a change so it should be ( dare I say

    Good to see that Cobi Jones is proving to be a good signing (at least
    so far).  Can you provide any background info on Dion?  I confess to
    having no knowledge of him prior to his signing with Coventry.

    and then broke his leg and never really got back in the side. Before
    that he was at Cambridge Utd.

    players etc) I used to watch them regularly at highfield rd many
    moons ago (i.e when the likes of big Jim Holton, Ian Wallace played
    for them, which IS many many moons ago).
    Since I moved away from coventry I kind of lost touch with what was
    happening.

    David Hillier is at Arsenal in the same bracket as Ebbrell. Maybe
    Coventry would like to buy him (or Linighan) as they seem to have to

    I saw the Leicester Sky blue game on Sky last night. Not as bad a game
    as the one against Villa a few weeks ago. We took the lead after about
    15 min through Wegerle. He took his goal very well. Gillespie was sent
    off (harshly I thought) for a foul from behind. He had been playing
    very well up to his sending off. Leicester then took control and scored
    10 min before half time, Roberts netted after an excellent save from
    Oggy. Leicester then had their centre half sent off for what I am still
    unsure. 
    Second half was very much kick and rush. Coventry took Wegerle off and
    brought Brian Burrows on in defence. We scored with about 15 min left
    Dion Dublin sliding in on a shot from Ally Pickering. Frantic last 10
    minutes with Leicester getting the equalizer with 4 min left. Roberts
    getting his second from a clearly offside position. Roberts was not the
    only one offside he was joined by 2 of his teammates. For Coventry
    Gillespie up to his sending off and Dublin were the pick of the bunch.
    I thought Oggy looked very shaky in the second half coming out to punch
    when he never had a chance of getting the ball. Overall these are 2
    teams who are going to struggle all season. We need a centre half and
    a keeper badly.

    Oggy, Pickering, Busst, Gillespie, Morgan, Darby, Flynn, Wegerle,
    Dublin, Cook, Jones.
    Sub: Burrows for Wegerle.

    According to the ref, the Leicester player was sent off for "illegal
    use of the arm and elbow".  Neither I nor any of the SKY commentary
    team could see any evidence to support this. It looked like a perfectly
    normal clash of heads, as seen in about 75% of all football matches
    (95% of those where Kevin Moran was involved !).
    
    As far as the second Leicester goal was concerned, it was pretty
    difficult from the linesman's point of view to call that one. The ball
    bounced through a crowd of players before Pickering (?) miscued his
    clearance. The ball then bounced into Iwan Roberts path and he put it
    away. What was not immediately obvious is that the ball bounced off
    another Leicester player before falling to Roberts who was then
    offside. Given that it took a couple of replays before this was clear,
    I think the officials could be excused somewhat for this error (mind
    you, it wouldn't matter to the ref who should already have been strung
    up for the sendings-off.
    
    Don't be surprised if the same ref is involved in a forthcoming Forest
    game. Stuart Pearce sat in the box at half time with everyone saying
    "Crap decisions", "totally ridiculous", etc.  When asked for his
    opinion he said "Well, it's very difficult for refs what with the new
    rules ..... etc". He stopped just short of saying what a nice guy the
    ref was !
    
    Anyway, unfair or otherwise, the dismissals made for a very open and
    entertaining match and the Leicester goal, although offside, made sure
    that both teams got the point that they deserved.

    Sky Blues go through to meet Blackburn in the next round, thanks to a
    3-2 victory over Wrexham last night. Dion is certainly on a hot streak
    at the moment, he got 2 last night with Wegerle getting the other.
    I can't recall Wegerle getting 2 on the trot since he joined us. Lets
    hope Dion continues to bring the best out of him, then we should have a
    'lethal' strike force. 
    
    BTW all 5 goals looked good last night on the box. I can't see us
    progressing any further in this comp', I don't care as long as we start 
    to pull away from the bottom A.S.A.P.

    His performance against Leicester was poor but by all accounts the
    other games he has played in he performed quite well. One thing's
    for sure I am glad we got him and not Lalas. 
    
    From what I hear we are on Sky on Monday night against Ipswich.

    well. We created a lot of chances mainly through Cook in midfield, who
    got MOTM. A pity Dion did'nt continue his scoring habit but hopefully

    Well a good win away against Everton on Saturday, with Dion and Roy
    grabbing the goals. By all accounts Dion's goal was a cracker. Wegerle
    certainly seems to have a new lease of life since Dublin arrived. I
    think he has scored 4 goals so far. Himself and Quinn never seemed
    to hit it off on the pitch, its a completely different story with
    Dublin. Here's to more and more goals from Dublin and Wegers. Ndlovu
    is back on the injured list after 10min against Ipswich.
    
    I read John Williams - the fastest postman in England- is on loan 
    to Notts County.

    We've had a few disappointing results since I was in here last. The
    worst was getting stuffed by C.P. 4-1 and we were at home. The only
    consolation is Dublin is still knocking them in. Pressley (sp) played
    against Arsenal gave away a goal and ( to the best of my knowledge)
    has'nt appeared since. We are playing Chelsea on Sunday at Stamford
    Bridge and I do not rate our chances one bit.
    
    I am still haunted by that scoreline above.

        For anyone interested here's what I thought of Coventry v Liverpool:

        Liverpool got off to a splendid start with Rush driving a hard shot
        just under Ogrizovic's outstretched right arm. The Reds went on to
        dominate much of the first half and Coventry would have been relived to
        be just the goal behind at half time.
    
        The second half started, much to my and nodoubt Liverpool's surprise,
        with a transformed Sky Blues, within the first minutes James was called
        on to make some splendid saves, one notably from Jenkinson after he
        bypassed two Liverpool defenders and shot low to James' right hand  post
        but he saved well.
               
        City's pressure finally paid off with Flynn heading home firmly from
        about 12 yards, Ruddock once again beaten by Flynn's height !  The Sky
        Blues continued to severely torment Liverpool's defence for the
        next 15 minutes.
    
        Much to the relief of Liverpool the remainder of the half was more
        balanced with both sides having opportunities to win.
    
        Players that impressed for Liverpool - only Rush as he kept going and
        always threatened, for Coventry - Flynn and Morgan and manager Phil
        Neal as he must have given one hell of a half time team talk.

    Coventry may well be relegated but they have to beat Norwich in a 4th
    round replay on the 8th February, having drawn 0-0 on Saturday at
    Highfield Road, to progress in the FA Cup.
    
    If they beat Norwich they play at Everton in the 5th round on either
    the 18/19 February.
    
    Next Saturday its back to league action against Chelsea, they need the

One of the reasons Phil Neal was sacked was that the coverage of the Sky Blues
was practically non-existent here as well.  Apparently, the arrival of
Big Fat Ron put 5,000 on the attendance on Saturday, got a report in every
newspaper and they won.  Could be a good decision by a football chairmen - 
incredible!!

At home to Leicester on Saturday so should be another 3 points.

    Well we were beaten 1-0 by Q.P.R on Saturday. According to the Sunday 
    People Q.P.R were well worth their win. They played for a good part of
    the game with 10 men. We seem to have gone astray lately. We need 2
    more wins to be sure of safety. 
    
    I was delighted to see Gordon Strachin join us as Asst Manager. Maybe
    big Ron will entice him out of retirement for the last 6 games. 
    
    I think Ron/Gordon will buy during the close season a Keeper, 
    Centre Half and a strong midfield player. According to yesterday's
    People, Andy Townsend is high on their list.

    We are still on the brink of relegation. Strachin played against
    Sheff Wed, we got a 2-0 win with goals from Dublin and Ndlovu, then
    we get done by Forest 2-0. Our next game is on May 1st against
    Man Utd  we are at home, what a game to win to ensure our safety.

    Well we were beaten 3-2 when I felt we deserved a draw. Kevin
    Richardson gave what I would describe as probably the worst back
    pass I have ever or am ever likely to see. I thought Ndlovu played
    extremely well and he took his goal very well. Dublin has great skill
    for a tall lanky centre forward. He played too deep I felt to cause
    them too much bother. Overall I thought it was a very good game with
    both teams playing attractive football. 
    If we play like that against Ipswich the 3 points are ours and safety
    along with it. Another nail biting end to our season.

    At long last our worries are over for another season. Just heard
    on the Radio, we beat Spurs 3-1 at White Hart Lane. Ndlovu got 2
    and Dublin getting the third. C P were beaten by Leeds which insures
    we stay in the Premier. I hope big Ron has a massive clearout during
    the Summer and that he brings in some quality. 
    
    We play Everton on Sunday in our last game, as both teams are now
    safe it should be exibition stuff for the fans.

    Read the other day we have splashed out HUGE money (150k) on
    a young, up and coming Portugese player. I can not recall his name
    or the position he plays in. BFR is also chasing John Collins from
    Celtic now that would be a good buy IMHO.

    Don't mean to sound disrespectful, but John Collins can't have much
    ambition if he wants to leave the `New' Celtic, and play for a side
    that will never win anything, or even qualify for Europe for that
    matter.
    Unless the lure of the dosh proves too much (he's on �3K a week), I
    think he'll stay at Celtic. That is, assuming a big club like
    Liverpool, Newcastele, Man U or Kiddeminster Harriers don't move in.

    Read a line in the game story for the US-Nigeria game, that Cobi Jones
    would not be returning to Coventry next season.  Any info regarding the
    parting of the ways.  Cobi certainly looked impressive for the US

    I'm portuguese and in our sports newspapers Isaias ( he is Brazilian)
    is said to have signed a contract with Coventry City. He's about 30
    years , he plays in the mid-field and he became famous for his strong
    shot. Most of his goals are shots from 20 , 30 mts distance.
    About 3 years ago Benfica played against Arsenal and Benfica won by 3-1
    , remember ? I think it was in the U.E.F.A cup . Isaias scored twice
    and he was the best player in the field...

I saw Lamptey twice and he was rubbish both times. Ron bought him for Villa, and

    Well, we are not going very well at the moment Sh*te would be a more
    appropriate description. We seem to be missing alot of players through
    injury at the moment the most notable been Dion Dublin. Ndluv missed
    a sitter against Shef Wed on Sat. According to a Sunday rag Strachin
    was brilliant but he got little or no support. We play Spurs tomorrow
    night in the CC cup. I hope BFR has some magic tucked up his slieve or
    else he'll get the dreaded 'I fully support the manager' from the 
    Chairman sooner than he thinks.

The number of Coventry fans the commentator counted in the official
away fans enclosure last night.

They rightly said it was pathetic.  Coventry, I was informed, is only
75 miles from Sheffield and they could only muster 192 fans to make
the trip :-(.

    I watched the match on Sky and I was totally p*ssed off. Oggy could
    not be faulted for any of the goals. Richard Shaw is a total plonker.
    not one of the back 4 played a half decent game. We would have been 
    better off leaving Oggy covering the defence. Richardson is not playing
    well. I thought Williams was better when moved back to replace Rennie.
    
    Ndlovu missed a sitter when we were 1 up. I feel very sorry for Dublin
    imagine scoring a hatrick and still end up on the loosing team. He will
    not stay around too long. 
    
    BFR was totally dejected when interviewed after the match. I believe
    after watching the game that apart from Dublin and Oggy the rest should
    be ashamed picking up their wages. Total crap. What I would'nt give
    for a Roy Barry, Ernie Hunt, Colin Stein, a bit of steel, skill and
    guts.
    
    n.b. Paul Maguire, Jim Foy told me you were in the plant yesterday
         I'm sorry I missed you. Maybe if you are over again we can meet

As a strong admirer of Shaw at Palace I was very surprised by his 
performance against Sheff Weds. He looked a totally diferent player than the 
one who made it to the edge of the England squad in the summer and was our 
player of the year. However, part of the reason for his good performances was 
the partnership with Coleman. Rennie does not inspire the same sort of 
confidence! Also, Southgate tended to sit just in front of the back four in a 
holding midfield role, the Coventry midfield seem to all want to go forward 
ALL the time!

I am sure Shaw will settle and show he's worth the money, afterall, Shearer, 
Cole, Ferdinand, Sutton, Collymore et all had a pretty poor scoring record 
against Palace last year, and we had one of the best Premiership defences 
overall - we just couldn't score!

    Being one of the few Coventry supporters in the US is hard enough
    without the team sinking to new depths.  Although the last Premier
    League highlights program I saw featured a great display of "heart" by
    the Sky Blues as they fought back from 2 goals down to earn a draw

    Any talk over there on Coventry pursuing McGrath from Aston Villa? 
    Here in Boston Frank Stapleton was announced yesterday as coach of the
    new Boston team in the new US league.  The news report went on to talk
    about possible "foreign" signings.  McGrath was cited, but the story
    went on to say that Ron was after him for the Sky Blues.  By the way,
    the others mentioned were Packy Bonner, who was reported to be close to
    signing and ... the great Aldo!  Gee, I've read so much about the
    greate Aldo in this notesfile I'm hoping he signs just so I can claim
    to have seen the great one in person!!!    :-)

     Paul Maguire I received the magazine. It is an excellent magazine full
     of interesting info, great quality. I wish the team could turn in a 
     few performances with quality to compliment all the work thats going
     on in the background. I was disappointed to see we got beat 3-2 by
     the Hammers last night. Dublin and Whelan got the goals. We have
     another tough game on Saturday away to Arsenal. There is 6 points
     between us and West Ham after last night so it is vital to get a result 
     on Saturday.

    I have no match report, but having watched the highlights - I stress 
    the word highlights- on MOTD we could have won by 4 or 5. Richard Shaw
    missing a sitter 2 yards out crossbar was struck at least twice. Whelan
    got the all important goal in the first half. I believe we signed 2
    players today -Liam Daish from Birmingham and Eoin Jess from Aberdeen 
    for a total of 3.5m. Daish is a centre half in the old style and Jess
    is an attacking midfielder who scores goals. This takes BFR's spending
    to 13.5m since he took over. One last point I heard that BFR is trying
    to sign Jan Molby, can anyone confirm or deny.
    
    Hopefully Daish and Jess will make their debuts on Saturday at home to
    Middlesboro. I am hopeing we can add to Robson's problems.

    The signing of Eion Jess for #2.0M from Aberdeen was completed
    yesterday. The midfield player is in the squad for tomorrow's game
    against Middlesbrough. Lets hope they are as bad as when I saw them at
    Wimbledon last week!

    Man City got beat 3-1 by Arsenal.

    the Daily Record showed the poor guy's leg crumpled beneath him. It's
    certainly the worst injury I've ever seen. Schmeichel looked like he
    was about to faint when he saw the extent of the injury, fair play to
    him and the other players for having the guts to continue in the match. 
    Apparently it took nine minutes to clear the area of all the blood lying 
    near the goal. He'll be out of football for at least a year and it must 
    be doubtful if he'll ever play football at senior level again....

    I hope he makes as speedy a recovery as possible from what looked like
    an horrific injury. Considering his very recent jump to senior level it

    Well we have got 7 points from 9 in our last 3 games. We are out of the 
    bottom 3 but only on GD. We play Wimbledon away Saturday week, then
    Leeds at Highfield Rd. I have'nt been this nervous for years. I feel
    BFR is right it will all be decided on the last games.

    Seems to me, from my vantage point across the Atlantic, that for many
    years now, Sky Blue fans have had to endure just this sort of anxiety
    thru the final days of the league season.  I've been consoling myself
    with the fact that Coventry seem to have managed to find a way to
    escape the drop in Houdini-like fashion year after year.  Hopefully
    this year will be no different.  I only wish that I had more immediate
    access to results and tables than getting into work on Monday morning
    to check this notesfile and the Carling Website.

    Yes I take your point we are nearly always in this situation, but for
    some strange reason I feel less confident this time round. Before I
    always believed we would beat the drop and then win something the
    following season. I used to drive my mates insane with my projections.
    
    BFR is taking a leaf out of my book he reckons that if we stay up,we
    will be a real force next season. Maybe this is what's making me more
    nervous.

    Don't worry. I watched Coventry escape relegation 3 years running
    on the last day of the season (84-86). In '87 they won their last
    game but it was at Wembley ;-)
    
    Man City have Villa and Liverpool left and a worse goal difference.

    I was at the game. It was Ndlouv's day he scored 2 and went close
    with 2 other efforts.
    
    The 7,000 City Supporters who made the journey to Selhurst Park
    were convinced that this result would keep us in the Premiership,
    unfortunately the other results did not go our way.
    
    Manchester City beat Aston Villa and Southmapton beat Bolton so its all
    down to the last game on Sunday. City will certainly be looking for
    Safety against Leeds while hoping Wimbledon paly better at the Dell.
    
    Manchester City are at home to a Liverpool side, 6 days before the FA
    Cup Final and already in Europe.

    I'd say the atmosphere was great even against Wimbledon. Sheff Wed
    are in just as deep as they are the only ones out of the 4 playing 
    away next Sunday. I believe Man City will beat Liverpool but not by

    I'll start the ball rolling for the new season..
    
    Gary McAllister has signed from Leeds for #3M plus #3M in salary. BFR
    has taken his spending to around about #17M and Coventry over the last 2
    years have been the 3rd highest spenders in the premiership!
    
    All this on an average gate of about 15,000.
    
    I'll post the fixture list upon my return from Holiday.

    Well it seems like young Gordon Strachan completely lost it last night
    in the reserves match at W.B.A. The radio reports said that he was
    shown the red card by the referee but refused to go... and the match
    was held up for 14 minutes until they convinced him to leave the
    pitch.
    
    After him running onto the pitch at Chelsea last weekend I guess the FA
    are going to throw the book at him....

    operation since his accident. The metal pin in his leg has caused an

    Possibly the euphoria of avoiding the drop at the last minute is as

    I don't think they'll do as badly next year with Strachan now having
    breathing space to recover from BFR.

    BFR has a habit of totally ruining clubs. He left the Mancs in as bad a 
    state as he left Villa. A squad full of old players who looked alright
    as long as the opposition didn't try very hard.
    
    I think Coventry will do okay next season. Which is a shame really. 8-)
