54.1 | Pre season games | BAHTAT::BLYTHE | Ee bah gum th's trouble at t'mill | Mon Aug 12 1991 11:41 | 10 |
| Pre season games involving the Clarets have not been too good. They lost
1-2 to Oldham on 8 Aug, and 1-0 to Preston North End on Sat 10th. I am
not sure if they will play Blackburn Rovers before the season starts. I
have asked BFC for a fixture list, so when I get it, I'll post it here.
I hope to see the Clarets a few times this season, for a 4th division
club, there is good support and a real atmosphere, even after what they
went through, Div 1 to almost out of the league, 1978-1985.

Could be another season of disappointment and frustration at Turf Moor.
Sigh....
I remember sitting behind that goal watching The Clarets hold their own

of the more recent managers of this once-fine footballing side.
Burnley need to build from scratch and not try and buy short-term
success a la mid-eighties., but will this keep the Chairman happy?
A win on Saturday is vital against a poor Carlisle side only a
couple off the bottom of the division.
The season has a long way to go yet. Promotion is not essential
but after blowing a good chance last year some success is needed
to keep what little promise there is left.
Play Up the Clarets!

54.10 | Now 3rd - big game Sat. | BAHTAT::BLYTHE | Ee bah gum th's trouble at t'mill | Wed Nov 06 1991 17:50 | 14 |
| Burnley are now 3rd, behind Mansfield and Barnet. Mansfield come to
Turf Moor on Saturday, and the game should be well attended, myself
included. Recent results have gone well for the Clarets, a 2-0 win on
Saturday vs Halifax at The Shay, followed by a 3-1 win vs York City
last night, watched by 7,300 - the 3rd largest crowd of the night, for
a full Div 2/3/4 fixture list. A few more results like the last ones
will put the Clarets in good stead - watch out for 15,000 crowds for
big matches if they stay near the top. Not bad for Division 4 - and eat
you hearts out Blackburn Rovers !
A crowd of 13,000 or so is to be expected on Saturday - the atmosphere
will be good - could better times be on the way back ?

54.11 | On their way up ? | BAHTAT::BLYTHE | Ee bah gum th's trouble at t'mill | Mon Nov 11 1991 11:00 | 27 |
| Clarets 3 Mansfield 2, Attendance 11,800
The biggest Div 4 crowd this season saw an entertaining game between
1st and 3rd of the division. The football wasn't classy, but it was
honest and entertaining, ans it gave a bit of neck ache if you
watched the ball to much ! Burnley went ahead on 7 minutes with a
Conroy penalty, the goalie bringing down a Burnley player when clean
through, the goalie went for the ball rather than scythe the man down,
so he didn't get booked or sent off. Mansfield then equalised on 33
with their first attack of the game. In the 2nd half, Burnley made it
2-1 with a good headed goal from a corner, Steve Davis the scorer.
Mansfield then had their best part of the game, equalising, and almost
getting a winner, Rogerr Eli, the Burnley sub, hit his own bar with a
clearance. Burnley got a deserved winner near the end, when John Pender
headed in from a corner, an almost carbon copy of the 1st goal. Burnley
are still 3rd, but only 4 points behind the leaders Barnet, and 2
behing 2nd placed Mansfield, with a game in hand over Barnet.
FA Cup action returns to Turf Moor on Saturday, Doncaster Rovers being
the opponents. Doncaster Rovers return the Wednesday, where they
clash again in the Autoglass Trophy. Wins are expected !
It is still early days, but the fans reckon this could be the first
part of the long road back - the support is there and there may be some
money available for team building.

Rotherham in the FA Cup at the weekend. Saturdat sees the Clarets
playing Scunthorpe at Turf Moor - hopefully another win. They are now
2nd, behind mansfield, Barnet having faltered somewhat.
I hope to see them on 28 December, they are home to Doncaster Rovers,

18,000 packed into Turf Moor to see an entertaining 2-2 draw. Derby
went ahead on 28 seconds - their first attack caught the Clarets cold.
Burnley were level after 6 minutes, a great crodd, Eli scoring. The
game was good end to end stuff, and Derby went ahead on 71 against the
run of play. Burnley made it 2-2 with 9 minutes to go with a great
goal, and finished stronger of the 2 sides, all in all, a good game.
Burnley's fine away run of 8 victories on the trot ended on Saturday at
Blackpook, they went down 5-2, and are now 2nd behind Mansfield, 2-0
winners at York. Barnet went down 5-2 at home vs Rotherham. A Leeds
player on Loan to Blackpool (Kerr) scored 1 of the goals. Forthcoming
games are Tuesday 14th, Derby away, FAC R3 replay, Sat 18th, Gillingham

The weather came to Burnley's rescue last night, they were on the way
out and then the fog came down. They have another go on Sat 25 Jan, the
4th round day, so Villa will be left kicking their heels on that day.
Home to Gillingham on Sat, a win here to keep their Championship bid on
the rails and to get last Saturdays' 5-2 reverse out of their system.
There is also an Autoglass Trophy game coming up next week against
xxxxx, so the FACR3 replay cannot take place then.

| Derby 2 Burnley 0 - no abandonement this time !
Derby went through to a Midlands 'Derby' with the Villa, after being
given a fright by the Clarets. A Gee free kick gave Derby the lead in
the 2nd half (a real scorcher), and a mistake by the Clarets goalie,
dropping a backpass, let Ormondroyd in to get the 2nd. Burnley had
their chances, but they didn't take them / were thwarted by Shilton.
The Clarets are out, but it took 3 games - that will have put some
money into the bank / director's pockets. The League is now the top
priority, they are still top, although the Autoglass Trophy could
result in a trip to Wembley - they play Scarborough on Wednesday, the
first attempt last week was frozen off after 90 minutes.

I see the Clarets humped Northampton 5-0 last night to stretch
their lead at the top of the 4th Division. Attendance once again
good - over 8K for an evening k.o. - and for all you Reading
fans Conroy scored again.. With close rivals Mansfield recently
going off the boil the only current threat is from Blackpool and
Barnet.
This could be the year for Burnley to finally extricate themselves
from the basement. The glory days of the sixties are a long way
away but they must be doing something right at Turf Moor and I
hope they can clinch promotion outright so's to avoid the kind
of disappointment of last season's play-off defeat.

The Clarets managed a draw at home to the second-placed Seasiders
on Saturday in front of a crowd of over 18,000 - the ninth highest
of the day in England.
Burnley remain on top on GD from Blackpool, with two games in hand.
With Barnet getting humped at Rotherham, the chasing group is just
hanging on to these two now. It would be nice to see Blackpool go
up with Burnley this season, a promise of a return to former
glories for both these once-great clubs.
Tough game on Saturday, away to improving Cardiff, themselves now
entertaining thoughts of a promotion place in about 5th position.
Should be a good game.

The Clarets won again on Saturday, at home to Barnet.
After the 3-0 thumping away to Gillingham in mid-week and thus
giving up top spot to Blackpool, Burnley needed to get back to
winning ways against fading Barnet, and they ran out comfortable
3-0 winners in front of over 12,000 at Turf Moor and recapture
first place in the division due to Blackpool's inactivity.
Barnet are now dropping off the pace, and with most of the other
top sides dropping points Burnley's win was invaluable. They now
look very good for one of the automatic promotion slots, with
possibly Blackpool and Mansfield. Crewe, Rotherham and Cardiff
seem to be competing with Barnet now for the play-off places.
I'm hopeful they can go up as Div.4 champions in May.

The previous league game would probably be back in Oct 1985.
Reading v Wolves
A win would mean 14 straight wins in a row at the beginning of the
season, extending their record. Unfortunately they drew 2-2. I believe the
official attendance was exactly 15K. with a few thousand locked out. During the
latter stages of that run, Elm park was always packed. Unfortunately after the
hopes of extending the record dissappeared, the crowds dropped by about half :-(

11 thousand turned up at Turf Moor to see a 2-0 win midweek

Blackpool still look most likely to pose the biggest threat, with

better crowds than their money bag neighbours down the road (Blackburn
Rovers, currently going through a sticky patch, will they miss out on

on Easter Monday, it looks as I won't be able to see them again this
season, as Leeds' and the Clarets' Home matches correspond - hopefully
this won't be the case next season. Burley are also in the Northern
Final of the Autoglass Trophy, they play Stockport, currently doing

Just thought I'd mention this for all you 100's of Burnley
read-only noters...
I was wrong - Burnley travelled extremely well! After a nil-all
draw at Turf Moor against Plymouth, the Clarets went down to
Plymouth last week and won the 2nd leg 3-1 after going a goal
behind.
They now face Stockport County at Wembley at the weekend for a
place back in the top two divisions, from where Burnely have been
absent since the mid-80's.
I'm sure you Reading supporters will testify that we can do without
Stockport going up, with their own inimitable interpretation of
football.
Preston are in the div.3 final by playing the same neck-aching style.

AGAIN!" from the second leg at Plymouth.
This will no doubt follow "they think its all over" and "do I not like
that" into footballing legend.
My mate the Burnley fan is very embarrassed by the fact that anyone who
saw Burnley's goals against Plymouth might be tempted to think John
Francis has an ounce of talent. He assures me this is not the case !
Cheers,

Burnley will do will in div.1 if they get there. Only hump-it-up

"Burnley will do will in div.1 if they get there. Only hump-it-up

County do not "hump-it-up" as you say, in fact they play more along the
ground than most other teams in the 2nd Division, as they have quite a
small back line.
Kevin Francis, whom I presume you refer to as the 'lampost'(I dare you
to say that to his face :_)))) has more skill on the ground than people
give credit for. I would have said 80% of his goals were scored either
at ground level or by volley. Andy Preece is another who has this habit
of finding the back of the net(as QPR found out), and along with a
Chris BEaumont have a formiddable front line that I think the 1st
Division will have problems with, height wise as well.
Quite a few 1st and Premierr division teams have been interested in the
above 3 mentioned players, so the style of football can't be too bad.
Have to ask as to when did you watch Stockport County, as they do not
have as much TV coverage as say Swindon!!!!
On the subject of tickets, County say they have only managed to sell 4
thousand of their allocated amount, rumour being that they will fail
again at Wembly as they have done in the past.....(4 times at Wembly in
the last 3 years.... can Burnley compete, I mean Wembly is like a
second home to the County :-) :- )

I've only seen Francis at Elm Park the last two seasons and he was a
total Donkey. I'm sure he has played better against other teams but this
season's game was probably his worst, as every time the ball came his way, it
was off his shin, knee, and countless other boney bits on those spindly things
you call his legs.
IMO, he's a donkey, but he is dangerous in the air with his height.
But I'll agree Andy Preece is good, of what I've seen of him.
Considering I don't like Burnley either, I hope it's a draw, and

| Paul,
Beer and Football ! - this just gets better and better but we can't
really continue in a Burnley FC Note.
However there is a football connection so I will ramble on if I may:
Anyone who knows about Beer will know of Blackburns glorious past, with
3 breweries in the town just 20 years ago things were looking good,
Thwaites, Duttons and Lion (a.k.a Matthew Brown). But then along came
the brewing premiership and Whitbreads took over Duttons, S&N took
over Matty Browns (and shut it down), and only Thwaites remains
independant. The town remains well served by Pubs, and my favourite crawls
are now immensely rich in variety... many tales of which can be told
but are hardly appropriate given that Football noters are only really
interested in discussing the merits of 4-5-1 and who's buying who.
To get back to football, it is believed that the McEwans sponsorship of
Rovers is not unconnected to the incredible battle that took place when
S&N, in a hostile takeover battle, swore to develop the Lion Brewery
and then having won the battle developed it as a car park ! The reason
for this, albeit denied at the time, was that S&N already had over
capacity and only wanted Matty Browns large network of Pubs in such a
heavy drinking area.
Thankyou for listening,
Cheers

Well for you 1000's waiting with baited parts.....
The mighty Clarets were victorious on Sunday, defeating a dirty
bunch of cloggers from down the A6 (the best thing to come out

Burnley won 2-1, and Stockport had two of their thugs banished
from the field before the fat lady sang. 467,000 fanatical
Burnley supporters filled Wem-ber-ley as the great stadium
welcomed back one of its favourite teams.
This is magnificent for Burnley, and sees their deserved return

from such hotbeds of soccer as Grimsby, Barnsley, Watford and
Swindon, to name but none.

Not really, Paul. United are my team.
Burnley are my home town, and I've sat behind the goal at Turf Moor
many times between '69 and '76, mostly spent in div.2, sometimes in
div.1. Burnley has always been a friendly family-type place to go
to watch football. United, on the other hand, has much more
fanaticism and expectation. My dad took me to OT when I was but
a lad. All the rest of the family were City supporters and they
were more successful between '69 and '76, so there was plenty of
rivalry.

Unfortunately, Andy, there are "nutters" wherever you go....
I've said this in here before, but the worst violence I've ever
had first-hand experience of was at Ewood Park for a Blackburn v
Burnley Lancs Cup game about 20 years ago. I was on the upper tier
behind the end opposite the Darwen Road end (make sense??) and
the nutters were kicking the sheet out of each other all around me.
I was terrified and had nowhere to go to get away except a 20foot
jump to the terrace below.
And it was a meaningless match on an Easter bank holiday!!
Nutters..

Well one of the best goalkeepers I can remember from my youth was
Peter Mellor. He was between the posts for Burnley in the early
'70s and was a tremendously athletic and spectacular shot-stopper.
Burnley transferred him to Fulham once they got into div.1,
replacing him with John Stephenson I think..
Mellor went on to have a nightmare in the '75 cup final, when 2nd
div. Fulham lost 2-0 to two Alan Taylor goals for West Amm. One
went through Mellor's legs la Shilton v Poland '73. Mellor ended
his career at Portsmouth, and in fact was Pompey's last goalkeeper
before Alan Knight, their current 'keeper.

Dave Thomas was magnificent at Burnley, a real crowd favourite.
He was sold (as was Burnlley's want in the 70's with most of their
best players) to QPR, where he was also popular I remember.
Some other Burnley players that were sold include Bryan Flynn
(Leeds), Martin Dobson (Everton), Tony Morley (Villa). There were
others. The Burnley board (ie. Bob Lord) were often criticised around
that time for selling the club's future for short-term profit. The
80's decline almost saw this once-great club disappear from the then
football league. Norwich City and others beware....

54.66 | The names Bond, John Bond. | WOTVAX::GREENJA | Andy Green | Wed Jun 08 1994 14:02 | 20 |
| Andy,
The reason why Burnley really fell apart was JOHN BOND, who came to
Burnley and spent a fortune on the same people he wasted a lot of
Man City's money on, especially Kevin Reeves (who?).
I'm sure i've mentioned this before but Bob Lord held Burnley
together, they didn't realise just how much they needed him until
he'd gone. His club was envied throughout the league for its youth
policy and the 'develop to sell to survive' strategy may have stopped
them ever being great but it kept the club in Divisions 1 & 2 for a
long time. Bob Lord kept things under tight control in a style similar
to that of Ken Bates at Chelsea.
Incidentally, more recent Burnley boys were Micky Phelan (he'll be back)
and Trevor Steven.

Andy

Phelan and Steven were long after my times spent at Turf Moor,
Andy...
As for Lord, we have a difference of opinion. Yes, the youth
policy at the club was excellent, as the players we can mention
as having started there testify to. But he ruled with a rod of
iron, and upset many close supporters of the club with his
selling of crowd favourites. Often the reason was 'sell-to-survive'
but it hardly worked eventually. Bond was a disaster at the club,
but brought players in that he thought would do the job for him.
They didn't. Burnley were relegated after getting back into div.2.
The Burnley faithful don't like Mr Bond very much and there have
been stories in the past of threats to him and his family from
fans upset with what he did. I think that's terrible. The man was
and still is a useless turkey but that doesn't give anybody the
right to hound him like that imo.
Andy.

I suppose I liked Bob because Burnley supporters used to give him so

I agree Sam at Wimbledon is relatively popular but he too is criticised
when he sells to survive, he might even go the same way as Bob Lord
if Wimbledon had enough fans to raise more than a muttering of
complaint !. Franny Lee is probably the most popular
