Here's the first reply in the All-new Rich Kids topic, thought I'd get in a
quick 'We.re top of the league' note while it lasts. The Kids beat Cannes
2 - 1 away last weekend, with Robert getting the first and George popping
in the winner in injury time. George has now scored 5 in the first 4 games,
not bad.

Nice to see that we're at least 2 supporters of the Rich Kids

They beat Lyon 1-0 last Sunday (goal by ... George)

They are top of the league, 2 points ahead of Marseilles who drew
at home against Paris Saint Germain

Still 33 potential wins, why not ?

A 54' goal from Sir George gave ASM victory at St Etienne. A good

    missing.

Swansea , according to the BBC , have been badly affected by the UEFA
ruling on non Welsh nationals playing in European ties. Only 4
"foreigners" are allowed and this has meant Swansea have had to call up
7 teenage apprentices and semi-professionals including a 16 year old
keeper who has never played in the first team.

Monaco had to fight for this one after going 2 up inside the half-hour.
In the second half, Swansea played typical cup-tie football and
deserved a goal, although it came from a dreadful back-pass by Puel,
the youngster Legg took it well. Sir George seemed to be mentaly
wandering around the Mumbles and never got into the game. Ettori was
Ettori, and for the good of the team should retire now. Rui Barros played
well again. Not brilliant, but should be enough to qualify.

To escort the National Days Celebration of Monaco, a friendly
    has been organised:
      AS Monaco versus JUVENTUS Turin

    Result: AS Monaco: 1
            JUVENTUS: 0

Very pleasant, with Monaco dominating along the whole match, with 6
or 7 very clear occasions versus only 1.
    Goal by Fofana, first half.

A little bit disappointed by Juventus. Have to mention that Kohler and
Reuter were missing for Juventus (Germany-Belgium) and Wheah (injured)
    for Monaco.

As Monaco will play versus AS Roma in March (Cup winners), it was
interesting to meet a strong Italian team, although European Cups are
    another story.

Well, some people care, but some people are also having to cling to
    jobs...

Sir George is working well with Rui Barros and Dib continues to cover
most of the Stade Louis II without really doing anything. Mr Flashy
Shirt Ettori is now into pain colours, and needs replacing pdq. Lucky
Luc is either brilliant or wawful, which like the team itself, is
thenorm. Marseille want Petit, Juventus would like Sir George, and the
rumour that ASM applied to join the Italian league is true.

Apart from that, I'll be supporting the Canal+ Temoil louts (whateverappened

Hi hi I like that one. I went to see Cannes the other Saturday and it
was the worst display of football I've seen for a long time.

Back to Monaco. It's funny how they don't make waves but keep on

An excellent goal by Barros against Nimes. The Barros-Weah combination
works quite well. All they need now is to find a replacement for Sonor.

For their next league match, Monaco are at home to Caen (on the 29th).
If the lads are true to form, they'll lose. Marseille also have a tough

Seems the Marseille clear-out will take place with Papin going to AC
Milan, and the Yugoslav (Bobain?) joining Rodriguez and Pele as the OM
forward line from AC. Van Basten will move to either Barcelona or Paris St
Germain. Also leaving OM will be Sauzee (Paris SG). Mozer (??) and Waddle,
who looks set to replace Hoddle as the darling of Stade Louis II. OM want
Petit, but nothing is settled there.

As I said, only gossip, but should be ineteresting to see if anything
    like this does really happen...

Monaco advance to the semi-finals of the Cup Winners Cup, edging a pale
Roma side who could not score in either legs.

A tense game, not very spectacular, with the usual clever fouling by the
Italians to which the French responded.

A Petit-Passi-Sonor combination on the left gave the latter a chance to
adjust a perfect for Rui Barros's header who just could not miss that
one with 2 seconds left into half-time.

The second half saw the Italians trying to fight back but with little
inspiration, despite Giannini coming in as a sub. Rui Barros hit the
post once more after a devastating George Weah run.

For once a French side beat an Italian one.

Semi-finals with Bruges, Bremen and Feyenoord. Monaco have a very good
chance of qualifying for the final.

    Winners Cup final (first leg).

Monaco has nobody injured but Petit is on the bench due to 2 yellow
    cards.

The Dutch are renowned for their defence. They conceded 0 goal so far
in the competition but only scored 2.

The fast and clever Mongasques forwards should find a way around the
heavy Dutch defenders. I can see Rui Barros sneaking through Metgod's
legs and Sonor closing his eyes before the cross to Sir George. Weah
    must score this time.

51.33Brief reportULYSSE::CHAMPOLLIONric leads LeedsThu Apr 02 1992 18:1227
Tremendous first half by the Princes, they were all over, lots of
chances, lots of misses (usual Rui Barros missed sitter, open goal but
for Metgod after a George setup). BUT, Witschge had scored on a
free-kick, with, I suspect, a deflection at some point as Ettori
started moving left and then, too late, right.

Valry volleyed home the equaliser after a Dutch defensive header.

Fejenoord played brillantly, that guy Fraser held Weah to a poor
performance, the 2 black wingers are incredible (Blinker and Toment,
Gullit-like). Kiprisch is Mlby-like but dangerous. Experience.

The goalkeeper did another great game after Spurs'.

The result is logical. In the second half the Mongasques were tired.

Having said that, the return leg will be interesting. With a little
more space, Monaco could score first and then...

I wonder if the Dutch will play defence again for 0:0 or try and secure
a goal. I would think they will be cautious, but not perhaps with 10 men
    in defence like last night.

Mind you when they had the ball they sprung forward at lightning speed.

Feyenoord 2 Monaco 2

Monaco in the final of the cup winners cup.

Great result for the greatest team in Monte Carlo.

I bet it was a great game too, but somebody made a late decision and it was not
shown on telly - we ended up looking at Johnny Haliday singing with his wee pal
Charlie Aznavour. What a bummer. Still, the result was right and hopefully
the final against Werder Bremen will be screened. And if Monaco can beat
Marseilles this coming Saturday....

The reason of the TV no show:

The Feyenoord Mgr reviewed at the last moment the financial conditions
of the match rights, from 3 Millions francs (which is already quite
high) to .....10 Millions Francs !
Of course, TF1 could not accept it.
Eventually, Feyenoord lost 3 MF + associated ads, while we ve missed
    it.

Yep I saw the match as it was life on Dutch telly, Monaco were better and
based on the two games they deserved to go trough to the finals but they
never outclassed Feyenoord. The attackers of Monaco are very good but I think
that the goalkeeper sucks as he was responsible for two of the tree feyenoord
goal and always made a dodgy impression to me.

A.S. Monaco	- SV Werder Bremen

    		0	- 2

    				Allofs
    				Rufer

Monaco dominated most of the match, but they only managed to crack the
well organized Bremen defense twice. In the very beginning (10th minute
or so) Bremen's reserve keeper Rollmann (Fly-catcher Ollie Reck was
out, due to his 2nd yellow card) went out too late after a good pass
from Rui Barros (probably), but the following header went way above the
    goal.
The first chance for Bremen after about 20 minutes, a good shot from
the corner of the box, but Ettori cleared it. Monaco dominated the rest
of the first half and I think Wolter of Bremen was not subbed because
he was injured but because he never managed to control Fofana, who was
    - with Barros - the best player of Monaco.
The first half was quite boring altogether, so I nerly missed the goal:
A high ball into the Box, it looked like the defender would easily
clear it, but then after his header the ball went to the penalty spot.
Two defenders not going to the ball too consequently, so Allofs jumped
in between and in the net it was. No chance for Ettori.

The second half started with a wildly attacking Monaco team, but they
had no ideas how the get the ball into the box. Some shots from about
20meters, but harmless. Some fast-breaks (what is the correct term ?)
by Bremen, one of them saw Allofs being tackled in the middle area. He
obviously managed to pass the ball to Rufer [I watched Allofs and the
ref :-( ]. Rufer went on to Ettori, no defenders following, curved
around him and finally made it 2:0.
After that Monaco was very nervous, the possesed the ball most of the
time but Bremens defense never lost control. The 80th minute saw
a good header of Weah (I think), but Eilts cleared the ball on the
line. One of the best players for Bremen was Bratseth of Norway, who
always seemed to be at the right spot in the right time when it started
    to look dangerous for Bremen.

I think the victory for Bremen is not undeserved. Their defense was
very good and they made 2 goals out of 3 chances. The match wasn't too
much fun to watch, that's true.

As a former Parisian and now Rivieran, I have mixed feelings. I won't
see much of George this season but I am happy he found a real crowd to
play to. 45,000 is a wee bit better than 2,500 for his class.

To be frank, I don't believe Monaco will lose much. With Prez and
Barros to provide passes, Klinsmann will have fun with his head,
whereas Weah finds himself in a team lacking a playmaker. He will need
to fight hard to score. Good for him, he had too easy a life at Monaco.

    Yesterday (10 th)

       Monaco 3 - Bordeaux 2

A very entertaining match despite the absence of Jurgen Klinsmann and
    the presence of Luc Sonor.
All the goals were obtained in the first half. Bordeaux began with a
deflected shoot from Dugarry entering the Ettori's net. But, Monaco was
really brilliant from the 20th minute, with 3 goals:
    - A Simba's volley after a brilliant gesture from Scifo to lob the
      keeper
    - An intelligent goal from Ikpeba who shooted instead of crossing
    - The second volley of Simba after a cross of ...Sonor.
Bordeaux completed the score with Vercruysse, scoring after receiving
the ball from another god's hand.
I was again angry against Wenger in the second half, as he asked his
players to keep the score, what they did, with few occasions and many
dangerous situations in front of the Monegasque's goal.

I was a bit disappointed by Scifo, and impressed by Ikpeba, who
seems very promising. Simba was more that a Klinsmann's substitute, and
should be more often on the field. As usual, Djorkaeff was brilliant,
and IMO the best player of the match.

No one here yet??!! Some game, Steua Bucharest came to Monaco last
night and got beaten 4-1, but, that doesn't tell you much about a game
in which Monaco were 1-0 behind at half-time, and both players had ten
players left... So here goes, another on the tele report from your
roving (English) fan now following French football from a home
    somewhere near Paris.

Monaco opened strongly, and a nasty (almost 50-50) challenge in the
middle of the field near the beginning injured the French central
defender who went off quite some minutes after the free-kick, it also
saw the Rumanian booked (correctly) by the very good English referee.

Not much long after the substitution, the Rumanians broke away, and the
other French central defender tripped the attacker inside the box, who
only had the goally to beat, and so the defender was quite rightly sent
off. The penalty was knocked two handed onto the post by the keeper,
but it still went in. The French were a bit upset by all of this, and
their already strong tackling got stonger, oh, one of them got booked
as well (disent) at the penalty. One more booking, and following it,
Klinsmann for disent, saw much action for the ref.

The French still looked quite good, but with ten men it was difficult.
One long through ball was plucked out of the air by a Rumanian, and so
he too was rightly sent off. 1-0 half-time. Ten men each, and three
out of four central defenders missing!

In the second half, Enzo Chifo (wot a player!), complete with face mask
to protect a previously broken bone, took control. Passing, tackling,
strength and incredible skill on the ball, inch perfect crosses, passes
and everything, he worked very hard - as did the whole Monaco team
incidentally. First goal, Chifo cross, tall dark-skinned attacker
heads it past a previously, seemingly, invcible keeper into the top
corner. Next Chifo again just lost control getting onto a pass near the
edge of the box, but, he tackled the defender as he lost control, knocking
the ball to Klinsman clear in front of goal, 2-1. Monaco corner, hit
to the near post for a change, side-foot volley from Klinsman, 3-1.
Finally, Chifo again, cross to same tall, dark attacked, again a
near-post header, this time into the bottom corner, 4-1. While all
this was going on there were some bad tackles from the Rumanians which
got, rightly again, punished by bookings. Ref had an excellent game,
the French commentators 'tended' (slightly biased of course - aren't all
    commentators?) to agree.

In the end an excellent result, but, with 1 sending off each, and
numerous bookings each, an expensive (in terms of suspensions) night
for both teams. I really enjoyed watching it.

An impressive result for ASM yesterday !

Despite a tough opposition from the Russians, who were very
offensive, the produced a very good football, with as usual Schifo
driving the game, and Klinsmann very helpful ..in the passing.

They were leading 2-0 at half time, with a goal marked by Klinsmann
who escorted into the net a shoot from Ikpeba, launched by Schifo.
The second one was got by Ikpeba who picked up the ball to the Russian
libero and present himself alone in front of the keeper.

The Russians came back very offensively in the second half, and put a
goal with a solo from ? (don't remember the name). The Monegasque
defense seemed a bit static on this goal. However, the defense looked
like much more solid than recently.

Monaco got then a penalty when Dumas was pushed down in the box, after
a one-two with Klinsmann. Penalty scored by Djorkaeff
They then managed the match until a corner for Moskow, where the ball
went to Schifo near the Monaco box. Schifo launched Thuram who ran very
fast until the Russian box to score a nice goal, two minutes before the
    end.

Good result then, with a +3 goal average.

    A very good match !

Monaco was quite cautious in the 20 first minutes, with a good occasion
for the Turks. Then, there was only one team on the field.

At the end of the first half, a Scifo header on a corner went home,
just after a fantastic volley from Viaud, just deflected by the keeper.
5 minutes later, Blondeau overpeeded the Turkish defense on the left
side and crossed. The defense jammed the ball.. for Djorkaeff.

The second half was a one way match, with Monaco obtaining a dozen of
very clear, unmissable occasions... and only one goal, Klinsmann header
    also on a corner.

3-0 is really cheap for the Turks. I wonder how they could eliminate
MU. Are they shop keepers ?

Monaco now leads its Champions league group with 4 points, with a 7/3
    goal average.

Your English is a lot better than my French. I was trying to make a
(very cheap) joke about the word "overpeeded", which, to my knowledge

Scifo superbly scored in the 54 th minute after a Klinsmann rush through

This assumes Milan win their group, and from yesterdays game
	(Bremen - Porto 0-5), that's not a done deal :-)

In fact both group are in the exact same state:
	1) Barcelona	8 pts 1) Milan	8 pts
	2) Monaco	7 pts 2) Porto	7 pts

In fact, it was the same frustrating match as the PSG-Arsenal one,
with Monaco outrageously dominating all the match without being able to
score, despite several occasions, in particular by Kinsmann.
Barcelona had as usual a very good passing, only 1 serious occasion,
but converted in a goal by Stoichkov, on an enormous error by the
    monegasque's defense.

OK. Now, Monaco will have to play Milan at Milan, with only a very tiny
chance to qualify IMO, considering their inability to score at the
moment. Ikpeba was booked and will not play the semi.

By the way, it has been annouced that J.P. Papin has signed for ....

Some more news from a Monaco's neighbor:

    - Sony Anderson has been badly injured and will be missing for 5 weeks
      at least
    - As he is the main recruitment this season, Monaco is now the previous
year's team with Madar (coming from Cannes), and without Klinsmann
    - The last day was better for Monaco, after a win at Caen (1-0),
without Djorkaeff, also injured. Some oxygen for Monaco. The next
match at home will tell us if the form is improving.

By the way, some news of "our" two other 1st Div. teams:
      * OGC Nice: very good start for a promoted club, without star, with
a recruitment coming exclusively from Div 2 (except
the Ghanean Baffoe). 2 wins (at home), a draw and a
                  defeat (1-0 at Bordeaux).
Last win was versus.... Cannes. Not a bad match. I was
                  there.
The fact that Nice comes back with an unexpensive team
has curiously restarted the fans's interest for this
team, who in the past had upset his fans by getting poor
    		  results with well known stars.

      * AS Cannes: Same position as Nice after 4 matches: 2 wins, 1 draw,
1 defeat. Not bad for Safet Susic, who had the difficult
task to replace Fernandez as coach.
A good new: Cannes has eventually recovered its
"historic" shirt (white/red stripes), dropping the
yellow one formerly used only to please a sponsor...
The team seems good and offensive, but too much based in
                   front, on the Priou's skills.

    Monaco - Bastia 3:1

Well, not a bad week. Monaco outclassed Newcastle to reach the semis.
Now, the nex round will be tougher, as Monaco drew the one not to drew,
i.e. Inter. Considering the Italian's presence at Monaco, both legs can
    be considered as away legs.

The match versus Bastia was more difficult than the Newcastle's one.
Monaco and Bastia were 1:1 five minutes before the end. Bastia conceaded
an unnecessary penalty scored by Anderson, who scored again at the last
    minute.

Well, folks, Monaco was (logically) defeated 3:1 by a good Inter.

The first Inter half was tremendous, with superb technical skills
displayed. However, they were greatly helped by the Monaco's defense
that produced the worst match for a while. In fact, the big blame is
for Hirles, the youngster who was playing as libero to replace Dumas
(suspended). Hirles simply did'nt move and was easily dribbled on the
first goal by Ganz. On the second goal, he missed his tackle... leaving
ganz alone to score. Third goal: Zamorano was much faster than Hirles,
arriving in front of the goal 2 meters in advance.

In the second half, Hirles was fortunately left on the bench, and
Monaco played well, 10 versus 11, as Grimandy was immediately sent off.
They scored a nice one by Ikpeba, who should have come earlier, as
Henry looked exhausted and missed everything.
Monaco dominated a second half, and could have scored a second one.

Now, they still have a (slight) chance to qualify, but frankly I don't
see Inter defeated 2:0 on the return leg.

51.141Still all to play for...VARESE::TRNUX1::IDC_BSTRWed Apr 09 1997 10:4113
I only saw the first half, but I must say that Monaco seemed strangely
submissive. If I think of the problems that Casino Graz and Anderlecht
caused Inter in earlier rounds, I'd have expected Monaco (who are
certainly as strong as Inter on paper) to have put up more of a
struggle. Then again, they apparently looked a different proposition in
the second half, and i reckon this one's far from over.

Incidentally, I thought the first goal by Ganz should definitely have
been disallowed. The ball was still moving when Inter took the free
kick and most of the defenders had their backs towards the action. The
free kick itself was pretty dubious.

Definitely the better game of the two on display last night...The match
opened up with pretty ambitious play by both sides (unexpected but very
welcome from an entertainment point of view). Even after Monaco went 2
goals down after the half hour they played perhaps a little naively
    given the circumstances.

I agree with Dom however...this tie is far from over and definitely
worth watching the 2nd leg in 2 weeks from now.....

Well, Monaco is out, versus a very "realistic" side, but:

    - The referee had some responsibilities, particularly in disallowing
the Monaco's goal in the first half. I viewed the action twice, and
still wonder why it was disallowed.
    - Tigana has the others, having kept Henry on the bench during one
      hour !!

Anyway, Monaco proved to be as good as Inter, with however less experience
in the "faking" that made the difference.
