Some brief news.

Ards beat Donegal Celtic 2-1 in a friendly.

Glentoran are apparently selling The Oval (see discussion in the old
football conference). There was a pitch invasion in protest at a
friendly v Sheff Wed during the week (didn't get the score). The
    fans staged a sitdown protest.

This info was actually leaked months ago in a Glentoran fanzine but
didn't appear to be true. Now it appears likely. The club has spent
nothing on players and appears to be happy to slip into mediocrity with
an aging team. Portadown and Glenavon (despite their disasterous tour
down here losing to 3 first division teams) look set to be the kingpins
again. Glentoran even failed to produce a programme for the Wedneday
    game.

Glenavon meet Galway this weekend while Portadown meet Dundalk and
    Sligo.

Got to watch the video of Wed night's Ulster Cup Final

    Bangor 3 Crusaders 1

The game was ruined by the sending off of Crues defender Jim burrows
after 26 minutes. He was sent off for deliberate handball on the line.
Ironically Mark Caughey missed the resultant spot kick.

Crues took a shock lead on 40 minutes through Jim Gardiner but the
Seasiders equalised 4 minutes later with a Barry McCreadie goal.

Jim McCluskey gave Bangor the lead early in the second half and this
ended Crues hopes. Caughey added number 3 shortly before the end.

    Glenavon 3 Ilves 2

Glenavon's first ever victory in Europe was secured by Stevie Conville
with a goal 10 minutes from time.

Ilves opened brightly and took the lead on 12 minutes with the Glenavon
defence as usual posted missing. Glenn Feguson equalised against the
run of play and the Blues were lucky to be on level terms at the break.

Stephen McBride converted a penalty early in the second half and then
Glenavon gained control without really threatening to add a 3rd. More
defensive disasters allowed the Finns to equalise with a shot through
the legs of Robbie Beck but Stevie Conville saved the day.

There is hope for the return but the defence will have to improve. In
the 2 previous meeting between NI clubs and Finnish opposition the
Finns have won on away goals. What price a third?

    Red Star 4 Portadown 0

BBC teletext had a latest score of 0-0 right up until 8.45 and then
gave the result as 4-0. I was dreaming of a sensation but Ports wee
actually outclassed from the start. The first came on 15 minutes.
Alfie Stewart scored a cruel own goal for number 2 on 37 minutes and 2
brilliant free kicks in the late 14 minutes made the second leg
    academic.

Bangor were outplayed and outclassed. Goalkeeper Stephen Eachus kept
the score down as the Czechs turned on a brilliant display. Despite
the result thiswas a memorable night for the Seasiders making their
European debut. As one reported remarked "The Seasiders were out of
    their depth."

12.5Budweiser Cup 1st round resultsGALVIA::SPAINVi skall resa till Sverige ocksSun Sep 22 1991 22:2618

First round of the Budweiser Cup on Saturday with Portadown defeating
local rivals Glenavon 3-2 in a thriller. Paul Doolin and Stevue Conville
were sent off after 6 minutes but Ports raced into a 2-0 lead. 2 defensive
disasters saw Glens draw levewl including Alfie Stewart's second own goal
in 4 days. Sandy Fraser was then sent off but 9 man Ports snatched the
victory they deserved with a late winner.

Glentoran and Linfield both hit 4 v Ballyclare and Coleraine
respectively. Cliftonville beat Bangor 1-0. I don't have the other results
to hand.

The league begins next week champions Portadown away at Carrick and
Cliftonville "at home" to Linfield at Windsor Park.

A sad night for the Irish League clubs

    Portadown 0 Red Star 4
(Red Star win 8-0 on aggregate)

Outplayed, outclassed etc. Red Star looked like the team that got to
last season's final as opposed to the team that played in it. It could
    have been 8.

    Ilves 2 Glenavon 1
(4-4 Ilves win on away goals)

Twice before Finnish teams had met Northern Irish clubs in Europe and
twice before the Ulstermen bowed out on away goals. Linfield and
Glentoran being the unfortunate victims. This time it was Glenavon's
turn. 2 set piece goals did the damage and despite camping in the
Ilves penalty area for the last 15 minutes Glens just failed to get the
extra goal that they needed. Stephen McBride scored their goal
according to BBC NI but the Irish Times credit glen Ferguson with it.
    Take your pick.

    Olomouc Sigma 3 Bangor 0
    (Olomoc win 6-0 on aggregate)

No surprises here but Bangor get out with a reasonably respectable
    result.

	Ards 1 Glentoran 1

For once, an eye witness report on an Irish League game. I spent the
weekend in Dublin and a mate and I headed up to Newtownards for the game.
Both sides had won their opening league games and this drew a large crowd
to Castlereagh Park. Although Ards were at home the crowd was solidly
behind Glentoran. Being only 14 miles from Belfast many of the locals choose
to support one of the Belfast big two rather than their home town team.

The game was played at 100mph but some fierce tackling. Glens dominated the
first half but Ards looked more likely to score as they were always dangerous
on breakaways. They did indeed take the lead after 30 minutes when Tom
Leeman's shot broke off keeper Dean Smyth and in a mad goalmouth scramble
Magee forced it home. Leeman used to play with the Glens and he appeared to
gesticulate towards the visiting fans in the subsequent celebrations.
Minutes later the referee waved away a linesman flag as an Ards player shot
towards goal. Dean Smyth obviously thought the referee had blown as he
allowed the shot to come back off the bar. Had it gone in I don't think
Norman Loughlins would have got out of Castlereagh Park that evening.

Raymond Morrison grabbed an equaliser 10 minutes into the second half and
although Glens could have snatched it Ards looked the more likely side to
score with John Smith and Erskine always dangerous up front. A point each
was just about right.

Not too sure about the table but the top 2 are definitely correct and I'm
pretty sure Omagh are 3rd.

The Ports v Blues game was marred by crowd violence from Blues fans who twice
held up the game. Glens join their traditional rivals on top after a home
win abnd the Irish League table takes on a familiar look however grave doubts
still exist about both teams abilities. Omagh are the surprise packets in 3rd
place.

	Gold Cup semi finals

	Cliftonville 3 Glenavon 2

No details but the perennial bridesmaids have finally won a semi final. The
Reds have been so close on so many occasions losing 2 penalty shoot outs
last season even a 2-0 lead in the last 3 minutes v Glenavon in one semi final.

	Gletoran 2 Ballymena 1

The Glens won as expected. Again no details. The coverage here in the papers
is terrible. Should be a very good final.

Linfield on top of the pile. Billy Hamilton gave Distillery their first win
of the season with the only goal at Seaview. Ports had a good win at
Omagh with a goal from Martin Russell.

Linfield went nap on Saturday and underlined the seriousness of the title
challenge. Ards were outclassed. Glentoran kept pace beating bottom club
Distillery 2-0 while Ports also won to keep in touch. It's a 3 horse
race and it could become a 2 horse race as Ports have lost ace marksmen Steve
Cowan until the New Year with a serious ankle injury.

The traditional boxing Day Belfast derby should be quite a Christmas cracker.

    Linfield 1 Omagh 3

Great game on UTV last night. Omagh in their second year of senior
football clinched the Budweiser Cup before a large crowd at the Oval.

Martin McGaughey scored in 2 minutes for the Blues but the young Omagh
side rallied and full back McColgan headed in the equaliser from a
corner. The rest of the first half was even.

In the first 11 minutes of the second half we had a penalty, a sending
off, 2 shots against the woodwork and a goal. Referee Andy Ritchie
awarded a very very dubious penalty to Linfield early in the half.
George Courtney would have baulked at giving this one to Liverpool.
Repeated TV replays failed to show any reason for this disgraceful
decision. Stephen Baxter did a Chris Waddle imitation and justice was
done. Ray McGuinness of Omagh was then booked for kicking the ball
away. A minute later GaryMcCormick of Linfield did the same and as he
was already booked the referee had to send him off. Linfield then took
over and Martin McGaughey missed 2 gilt edged chances.

Omagh calmed their nerves, made effective use of the extra man by
continuing their crisp effective passing game (I'd never seen them play
before but they're a joy to watch) and on 56 minutes Harry McCourt
headed in a corner kick in front of the stunned masses of Blues fans.
Linfield bravely fought back and had chances to equalise but this was
not to be their night and Marty Woodhead rounded off a famous night for
the Co. Tyrone team with a marvellous solo goal.

Linfield's 16 match unbeaten run is in tatters and Eric Bowyer is still
trophyless. This has not been a great competition for Linfield.
Glenavon humbled them 6-1 in the final 2 years ago and they lost out to
Glentoran in the 1990 decider when they lost 7 times to the Glens in 7
games. You still see the T-shirts in East Belfast "The seven deadly
    Wins"

For Omagh this was a totally unexpected triumph. Although they've made
a reasonably good start to the league they were not expected to trouble
the Blues. They play neat attractive football reminiscent of Nottm
Forest and they deserve to succeed.

    Gary.

No live report. My friends had other plans for Saturday and I didn't get
to Solitude. I ended up down in the Mournes. It was that or watch Ophar play
Antrim 3rds which Ophar duly won 12-4 despite the copious amounts of alcohol
consumed by their flank forward on Friday night.

Back to football, I missed nothing at Solitude as a tight tense game ended
in a scoreless draw. The shock of the day was Crusaders victory at Windsor.
Roddy Collins (brother of boxer Stephen Collins) scored the only goal but the
Blues stay top on goal difference. The Crues were short 7 first team
regulars although the Blues were also short 3 players.

Portadown moved ominously closer to the top 2 with an impressive victory
over Larne. some new teenage sensation whose name escapes me was the architect
of this impressive victory.

Stephen McBride hit a hatrick as Glenavon won at Carrick while Distillery
picked up a very useful point after a gutsy defensive display at Ballymena.

The big story over the weekend was the transfer of Cliftonville's star player
Peter Murray to one of the new big 2. Apparently the Reds agreed terms with
Glenavon but now Portadowen have entered the fray.

Glenavon beat Portadown 2-1 in the Co. Antrim Shield last night
(strange one this as both Lurgan and Portadown are in Co. Armagh).

In a rearranged league game Distillery won their 2nd game on the trot

This lifts the whites well clear of the bottom. Champions Portadown

The top 3 all won. There's a break from league action next weekend with the
first round of the cup taking place. I didn't get to see the draw but I know
Glentoran have drawn Donegal Celtic. DC were drawn at home but have
switched the game to the Oval for security reasons. While the Glens must be
warm favourites they won't have it easy. DC are good enough for the Irish
league and would like nothing better than to pull one over on the league
leaders.

The results from the Bass Irish Cup 6th Round played on Saturday 15th February
are as follows:

  Ards 3 : 2 Dunmurry Rec
Ballyclare Comrades 0 : 1 Oxford United Stars
  Banbridge Town 2 : 2 Linfield
  Cliftonville 2 : 0 Larne
  Glentoran 0 : 0 Glenavon
  Limavady United 0 : 0 Crusaders
  Omagh Town 1 : 1 Ballymena United
  Portadown 4 : 0 Dungannon

The big shock of the round came at Ballyclare where the Comrades were knocked
out by little-known non-league outfit Oxford United Stars. Two other
non-league teams have at least made it to the Quarter-Final draw but I doubt if
they will go much further, Banbridge Town equalized with a last minute penalty
to take the not-so-mighty-anymore Blues back to Windsor Park and Limavady
United held Crusaders to a goalless draw up in the northwest.

The other two non-league teams left in the competition were beaten by league
opposition, Dunmurry Rec and Dungannon were knocked out away from home by Ards
and Portadown respectively.

In the top clash Glenavon held Glentoran to a goalless draw at the Oval, a
slightly better result than last week's corresponding league fixture in which
they were hammered 5-1.

Three of the replays will be this week on either Tuesday 18th or Wednesday
19th. The Glentoran versus Glenavon replay will be on Tuesday 25th because
Glenavon's Stephen McBride is in the Northern Ireland squad to play Scotland at
Hampden Park on Wednesday.

Result from Tuesday 18th February, a match postponed from earlier this season:-

  Ards 0 : 1 Coleraine

Result from Friday 21st February, match played a day early, I have no idea why!

  Glenavon 0 : 0 Newry Town

Results from matches played on Saturday 22nd February :-

  Ards 1 : 0 Carrick Rangers
  Ballyclare Comrades 1 : 0 Portadown
  Coleraine 2 : 0 Cliftonville
  Crusaders 0 : 1 Bangor
  Glentoran 4 : 0 Ballymena United
  Larne 2 : 2 Distillery
  Omagh Town P : P Linfield

Glentoran won well again and seem vitually assured of the title, eight points
clear with six matches to play. Portadown were beaten by lowly Ballyclare and
Linfield's match with Omagh was postponed due to bad weather. Most improved
team is Coleraine who have jumped from 14th to 9th after 2 good wins this week.

My beloved (?) Distillery scored a mighty 2 goals and gained a well-earned
point away from home at Larne but it looks like nothing can save them from
having to apply for re-election along with Carrick but that will be a formality
as there are no teams with facilities (or players !) to take their place.

Anyway here's the table :-

12.32Match report from SolitudeGALVIA::SPAINThere's always the U.S.Tue Mar 03 1992 14:1047
		Cliftonville 2 Crusaders 2

I picked a good one on Saturday. The North Belfast derby ended in a 2-2
draw. The game was entertaining particularly in the first half with a draw
the right result.

Having predicted this would be a 0-0 draw if I managed to make it I very nearly
changed my mind at 2.15 on Saturday. Having just got off the train at
Central Station I was spotted by a friend of mine who was on his way to
Windsor to see Linfield v Ballyclare. He was waiting for a Dublin based
Blueman who was on the train. With the offer of a lift to Windsor
and the pouring rain outside I very nearly changed my mind. Thankfully I
decided on Solitude and missed a very boring 0-0 draw at Windsor.

Cliftonville led twice but each time proceeded to throw it away due to poor
defending. As my trainw as delayed over 2 hours I just made it by kick off
time and consequently didn't get the teams. I recognized a few of the players.

The Reds took the lead on 10 minutes when Jim McFadden got away on the left
and his cross was turned into the empty net by ?????. Minutes left the
big centre half for the visitors headed home unmarked from a corner to
level the game. Eddie Patterson regained the lead for the Reds with a superb
strike on 25 minutes. Again the lead was quickly thrown away. A hotly
disputed free kick was awarded at the edge of the box and this was curled into
the net by Syd Burrows (I think). Goalkeeper Paul Rice shouldered much of the
blame due to his appalling positioning.

The second half was less eventful with the home fans spending their time
abusing Crues' midfielder Kirk Hunter. Kirk isn't too popular at Solitude
although he'd bve quite a good footballer except for the fact that he's
lacking one thing - talent. As usual he kicked everything that moved in
a red jersey but amazingly wasn't booked.

I was particularly interested in the 3 Southern players with Crusaders.
Martin Murray still has that extra bit of class however Robbie Lawlor and
Roddy Collins failed to make an impression.

I normally try to avoid games in NI with a potential for trouble (unless our
national side is playing) however this was easily the most attractive game in
the city plus it was another ground that I hadn't yet visited. Thankfully the
game pased off without incident apart from the usual sectarian singing. The
police always keep in the home fans and allow the away fans to get away. I
thought it was strange but the more I think of it it seems a good idea. The
home fans can't arrange an ambush and generally the away fans don't look for
trouble in unfamiliar territory.

Results from matches played on Saturday 29th February :-

  Ballymena United 1 : 1 Omagh Town
  Bangor 0 : 4 Larne
  Carrick Rangers 2 : 2 Coleraine
  Cliftonville 2 : 2 Crusaders
  Distillery 1 : 2 Glenavon
  Linfield 0 : 0 Ballyclare Comrades
  Newry Town 1 : 2 Glentoran
  Portadown 2 : 3 Ards

Nothing much happened this week, no positional changes at all in the table,
although Glentoran won again while Portadown and Linfield both dropped points,
Larne came back to form with a storming win at Bangor and my dear old team,
Distillery, continued losing, at home to Glenavon. The only real interest left
this season is over who finiehes second and clinches the UEFA Cup spot.

And eventually the table :-

First of all, the remaining sixth round replay played on 25-2-92 :-

  Glenavon 4 : 0 Glentoran

A fantastic result for Glenavon, two and a half weeks previously they had been
tanked 5 : 1 by the Glens but had bounced back the following week to a
scoreless draw in the cup and now have turned this series of matches on its
head with a return hammering!!

Well the Quarter-Finals are this Saturday (7-3-92) and at least they're still
all played on the same day in Ireland!! The draw is :-

Ballymena United v. Oxford United Stars
  Glenavon v. Ards
  Linfield v. Cliftonville
  Portadown v. Crusaders

The draw has been reasonably kind to the only remaining non-league outfit,
Oxford United Stars, as they play the weakest of the League teams left,
although they have to travel. The tie of the round is the Linfield -
Cliftonville, Blues - Reds ties are always tension filled and this more so as
both have had mediocre seasons by their standards and are looking at the cup as
their best chance of glory.

The results from the quarter finals of the Bass Irish Cup are as follows :-

Ballymena United P : P Oxford United Stars
  Glenavon 3 : 0 Ards
  Linfield 1 : 0 Cliftonville
  Portadown 0 : 1 Crusaders

I'm afraid I know next to nothing about these matches as I have been away in
the wilds of the Yorkshire Dales all weekend and have just discovered the
scorelines myself. Well, Portadown's abysmal run of form continues, I guess
they'll be hoping Linfield go on to win the cup as that will almost ensure
Ports a place in the UEFA Cup. Linfield won what looks like a close match at
Windsor, while Glenavon won comfortably and seem to be running into a rich vein
of form at the moment after beating Glentoran 4-0 last weekend.

Oxford United Stars never got their chance to be giant-killers again, their
match being postponed, so I'll mail the result of that match when it happens
along with the Semi-Final draw.

Irish League results from Saturday 21st March :-

  Ballymena United 2 : 0 Ballyclare Comrades
  Bangor 1 : 2 Glentoran
  Carrick Rangers 0 : 3 Larne
  Cliftonville 1 : 2 Glenavon
  Distillery 1 : 2 Newry Town
  Linfield 2 : 0 Coleraine
  Omagh Town 3 : 0 Ards
  Portadown 3 : 1 Crusaders

The top three teams all won, so there is no change there. Glentoran are eleven
points clear with only five matches remaining, my mental arithmetic tells me
they only need five points to clinch the title. Behind the top three, Larne
continued an excellent season with an easy win over bottom club, Carrick. My
team, Distillery, lost again at home to the team immediately above them in the
table, oh well you can't win them all (or in our case, can't win any :-)).

And so the table :-

Results from Saturday 28th March :-

  Coleraine 1 : 1 Omagh Town *
  Ards 0 : 0 Ballyclare Comrades
  Crusaders 0 : 2 Linfield
  Distillery 0 : 0 Ballymena United
  Glenavon 2 : 0 Carrick Rangers
  Glentoran 1 : 0 Cliftonville
  Larne 0 : 4 Portadown
  Newry Town 4 : 2 Bangor **

*  Played Friday night
** this score may be 4-3, my two sources disagree! I'll stick with 4-2 and
alter it next week if its wrong.

Not much this week, the top three all won again and Glentoran should pick up
the Championship on Saturday, they only need two points from four matches to be
certain. At last, my Distillery have collected another point, from a goalless
draw with Ballymena United. In fact not many goals at all this week excepting
Newry and Portadown.

Tragic news this week, apparently Stevie McBride of Glenavon wrecked his knee
during the match on Saturday and is 95% certain never to play again. McBride
is the best player in the Irish League and is regularly the only Irish League
man in the Northern Ireland squad, picking up a few caps along the way, it will
be a sad loss to football in Northern Ireland if he never plays again.

The table :-

Results from the Semi-finals of the Bass Irish Cup :-

Friday night at Windsor Park, Belfast (Linfield)

  Ballymena United 1 : 3 Glenavon

Saturday afternoon at The Oval, Belfast (Glentoran)

  Crusaders 0 : 2 Linfield

No surprises really and probably the most interesting Cup Final, as it is
Linfield's best chance of getting into Europe, unless they overhaul the Ports
and finish second in the league, and Glenavon's only chance. Both teams have
been overshadowed by their local rivals this season (Linfield by Glentoran and
Glenavon by Portadown) and will view the Cup as an opportunity to grab some
glory for themselves.

Linfield finally won one of the myriad of trophies on offer in Northern
Ireland. They beat Larne 3-0 in the League cup. This was their first
trophy since 1989. An own goal, Martin McGaughey and Glenn Hunter were
the Blues scorers. Larne were in the game for long periods and 2 late
    goals flattered the Blues.

This is a great boost for Linfield as they attempt to qualify for
Europe and win the Irish Cup.

Portadown have clinched the runners up spot by beating Newry. Linfield
drew 0-0 with Glentoran this week. It's Glenavon v Linfield in the cup
final on May 2nd. This is the only route to Europe for both sides.
    Should be a cracker.

Sorry this is so late but I was back home for a while, this is the first of
three posts bringing you up to date with the end of the league in Northern
Ireland.

Results from Saturday 18th April :-

  Bangor 2 : 0 Ballymena United
  Coleraine 1 : 4 Ards
  Crusaders 2 : 0 Ballyclare Comrades
  Distillery 2 : 0 Cliftonville
  Glenavon 2 : 1 Linfield
  Glentoran 1 : 0 Portadown
  Larne 3 : 0 Omagh Town
  Newry Town 0 : 3 Carrick Rangers

Glentoran had already wrapped up the championship the week before and they
rubbed it in beating deposed champions, Portadown, at the Oval. This could
have been a bad result for the Ports as far as UEFA Cup qualification goes but
Linfield failed to capitalize, losing to Glenavon in a preview of the Bass
Irish Cup final on May 2nd. Both the bottom two won and considering they have
only six wins between them this must be unique !!

Matt Bradley, manager of Newry Town, resigned on Saturday evening, stating that
he felt that he had done as much as he could with the players he had. Newry
are broke and cannot afford to buy any players so Bradley's frustration can be
understood. During his time in charge Newry won their first ever senior
trophy, a County Antrim Shield triumph.

  Portadown 3 : 0 Newry Town

I went to see the Big Two match at Windsor Park and it was BORING in a big way
so I couldn't be bothered to write a report, sorry!! This result combined with
Portadown's win at home to Newry meant that Ports clinched the UEFA Cup slot,
so Linfield have to beat Glenavon in the Cup Final or miss out on Europe for
the third season running.

In the crunch (!!) bottom of the table clash Distillery beat Carrick EASILY !!!
Two wins on the trot, this is getting ridiculous..........

No table this time, but final table in next exciting issue.

		Irish Cup Final

		Linfield 1 Glenavon 2

Glenavon won the Irish Cup on Saturday after coming from behind to beat
Linfield. Teenage sensation Gerard McMahon scored the winning goal. Martin
McGaughey - thre only survivor from the last Blues side that won the cup in
1982 gave Linfield an early lead but Geoff Ferris equalised.

Sadly the final was marred by scenes of crowd violence. The teams were taken
off the field for 10 minutes after Linfield's opening goal.

               Glentoran 0 OM 5

Glentoran were annihilated last night at the Oval. OM were simply in a
different class. Rudi Voller opened the scoring after 4 minutes and the
Glens spent the first half chasing shadows. Martin Vasquez was superb and
capped his performance with 2 goals. Frank Suazee scored the best of the night
from a free kick just before the break. The home crowd just stood in awe
at half time.

The second half was a stroll. OM eased off considerably. Glentoran had
a couple of half chances before Ferreri made it 5 just before the end. Pele
was denied the goal he richly deserved by the crossbar seconds later.

Both sides were given a standing ovation afterwards. Glentoran keeper
Alan Patterson described them as the best team he'd ever seen. The Glens
were not disgraced. Few teams in the world could have lived with OM last
night. The second leg in Marseille in 2 weeks time is going to be very
difficult but twith 2,000 people travelling from East Belfast the Glens won't
lack support.

	       Standard Liege 5 Portadown 0

Ports were outclassed last night. Only brilliant displays from centre backs
Alfie Stewart and Brian Strain and some outstanding goalkeeping from
Mickey Keenan kept the score down. The tie is now virtually over and
Ports will probablyy lose financially as there will only be a small crowd
at Shamrock Park for the return.

		Glenavon 1 Antwerp 1

Glenavon managed to hold Antwerp to a 1-1 draw after an entertaining game
at Mourneview Park. Sammy Smyth gave Glenavon the elad just before the
break but Antwerp equalised early in the 2nd half. The Belgians looked the
better side and were unfortunate to trail at the break. glenavon have little
chance in the return.

			Ulster Cup Final

			Linfield 2 Ards 0

Linfield won the first trophy on offer in Northern Ireland after a comfortable
2-0 victory over Ards at Oval. Ards were badly hampered by the loss of ace
marksman Harry McCourt just before the kick off but they can hardly complain
as the Blues were missing nine of their first team squad.

Ards started better but failed to break down a solid defence. The Blues took
the lead when they broke quickly out of defence and a long ball from
Ritchie Johnson sent Campbell through. Smith in the Ards goal won
the race for the ball but his clearance cannoned off Campbell and he finished
to the empty net. Early in the second half Campbell set up Beattie whose
cross was finished well by Johnson to make the game safe. Ards never
really threatened after that.

This victory will give Eric Bowyer's young side a lot of confidence however
it's the league that matters and last night will count for nothing when the
campaign starts on Saturday.

This was a poor game watched by a small crowd. Portadown were happy to
hold out for a draw and Standard were content to avoid injuries and progress
to the bext round without undue fuss.

			Antwerp 1 Glenavon 1

(aggregate 2-2, Antwerp won 3-1 on pens)

Glenavon bow out of Europe after a gutsy performance. Few gave them any
chance in this tie but they battled and battled. Antwerp took the lead
on 65 minutes after a hotly disputed penalty was awarded against McKeown.
Geoff Ferris struck the equaliser on 77 minutes (some papers credit Sammy
Smyth) to take the game into extra time. Glenavon survived extra time with
10 men to hang on for the penalty shoot out before eventually biting the
dust. They go out with heads held high and a heroes welcome must surely
await when they return to Lurgan.

Olympique de Marseille 3 Glentoran 0

						(OM won 8-0 on aggregate)

OM were content to stroll through this game. They fielded many reserves
but still won comfortably. Omam-Biyik and Pele scored inside the first 13
minutes before Basil Boli completed the scoring 15 minutes from time.

The weather played havoc with the weekend's Irish Cup ties. Roughly half the
ties were postponed.

Cliftonville 1 H&W Welders 0
Dundela 2 Newry 2

Glenavon 0 Ballymena 3
Limavady 3 Roe Valley 0
Chimney Corner 0 Drumaness 1

The other ties were all postponed.

The visit of league leaders Portadown to league champions Glentoran was
match of the day but it failed to live up to expectations. Carrick's
heroics in the Co Antrim shield took their toll as an injury hit side
collapsed in the second half and lost 4-2 to Bangor. Sammy McQuiston hit
a hatrick as Ballymena shocked the holders at Mourneview Park. The Lurgan
side are badly missing last year's hero Gerard McMahon who's now at Tottenham.
Newry needed a late Hawkins equaliser to snatch a replay against Dundela.
Given that the East Belfast side are one of the top junior sides and indeed
a former winner of the trophy a win here would not have been a shock. Newry
should just about scrape through in the replay. Cliftonville just made
it against the welders while Distillery had a lot to spare against British
Telecom.

Assuming the weather improves the postponed ties will be settled this week.
Larne v Crusaders appears to be the pick of them but Linfield v Coleraine
should also be a cracker. Omagh v Ballinamallard should be a very interesting
local derby.

A rare Irish League report follows. I made a "short" detour to Ballyclare en
route to Longford.

Ballyclare Comrades are still bottom of the league but they made a major dent
in the title aspirations of Portadown. The gallant Antrim side put up the
shutters and withstood constant bombardment in the second half to earn a vital
point. Ports had most of the play in the first half but failed to capitalise
on their possession. Dean Gordon almost gave Comrades a shock lead just
before the break. Joey Cunningham tormented the home defence in the second
half but Steve Cowan and Sandy Fraser were kept well in check by the 2
central defnders. Dean Gordon was particularly impressive playing only his
second game as a centre-half. Paul Prentice had a superb game in goal
culminating in a finger tip injury time save from Greg Davidson.

Linfield are now 4 points clear at the top after Stephen Baxter scored a
dramatic injury time winner. The Blues had trailed to a 58th minute McMullan
goal but Lee Doherty scored a superb 25 yard equaliser. The Lurgan side were
reduced to 10 men when Michael McKeown was sent off and Stephen Baxter took
advantage with a last gasp strike. Glenavon were denied what appeared to be
a clear cut penalty minutes earlier.

Distillery came from 2-0 down at half time to hammer Newry 5-2 at the
Showgrounds. Glentoran were shocked at home by Carrick Rangers who came
from a goal down to win 2-1. Ards beat Cliftonville by the only goal and
Bangor did likewise to Larne at Inver Park. Roddy Collins got the goal that
ended Crusaders dismal run that has seen them slide off the top of the league
and exit from the cups. Ballymena were the victims at Seaview.

It was quarter final day in the Irish Cup.

	Linfield 1 Bangor 2

Bangor won their 9th game in a row as they came from behind to defeat Linfield
in a thrilling Irish Cup quarter final. The first half was very close with
the seasiders having a marginal advantage. Within a minute of the restart
the Blues were ahead. Lee Doherty played a superb ball to Ritchie Johnson
and Dessie Gorman headed home Jophnson's cross. Bangor came storming back.
Tony Canning volleyed a superb equaliser and just when a replay looked likely
McCallan snatched the winner against his old club. Dubliner Paul Byrne was
man of the match and he looks likely to be signed by Liam Brady who came
over to watch him.

	Dundela 1 Glentoran 2

The Bangor v Linfield tie may have been the tie of the round but this match
epitomised the romance and the magic of the Irish Cup. The famous old cup
fighters from Wilgar street faced their East Belfast rivals Glentoran. This
was the game the whole of East Belfast wanted to see and the whole of East
Belfast appeared to have packed into Dundela's compact ground. The game
however failed to live up to expectations. Glentoran dominated the first 45
minutes and led 2-0 at the interval. Stephen Douglas headed home the first
and Barney Bowers made it 2-0 from the penalty spot just before the break.
Mark Snodden did pull a goal back in the second half but the Glens held on
comfortably in the end. The Junior side bow out and there will be no repeat
of their sensational cup win of 1955 but Glentoran left the "Hen Run" knowing
they'd been in a cup tie.

	Ards 0 Distillery 0

This was a boring scoreless draw with neither side prepared to take chances.
The replay can only be better.

	Cliftonville 1 Larne 1

Larne took a first half lead against the run of play. The Belfast Reds
equalised to force a replay at Inver Park but their chance of cup glory may
have gone.

Another rare eye witness report from the Irish League.

Portadown kept in touch with the leaders after eventually breaking down solid
Coleraine resistance. The home side defended stoutly in the first half.
They were helped by an inspired dislay from goalkeeper David O'Hare who had
a superb game. Portadown camped in the Coleraine half but there was no way
past O'Hare. Tragedy struck the Bannsiders after 48 minutes, Brian Donaghy
was adjudged to have handled the ball in the area. The referee awrded the
penalty. Steve Cowan beat O'Hare from the spot and the result was never
in doubt after that. Sandy Fraser quickly added a second. Coleraine finally
showed something in attack and they were denied a consolation goal by the
width of the crossbar. Stevie Cowan snatched a 3rd right on the final whistle
however the biggest roar of the day came from the Social club as Mick Galwey
crashed over the English line.

Linfield stay top after crushing Larne. Graham Harvey who signed from Airdrie
on Thursday promised a debut goal. He got a hat-trick in 36 minutes.
Philip Knell and Dessie Gorman got the others with McKinstrey getting 2
consolation goals for Larne.

Crusaders stay in touch with an easy win ay Mourneview. Syd Burrows and Jim
Gardiner got the goals, one in each half. Bangor hammered Ballyclare on
Friday night while Distillery avenged their cup defeat by Ards to keep
alive slim title hopes.

Liam Coyle gave Omagh their first ever win at the Ballymena showgrounds
while Newry had a shock win at Ballyclare. Glentoran won a thriller at
Solitude by the odd goal in five. The Reds were denied 2 clearcut penalties
and referee Freddie McKnight is persona non grata at Solitude from now on.

	Irish Cup semi finals

	Ards 3 Cliftonville 2

Cliftonville pressed the self destruct button yet again in a major semi
final. They had battled back from 2-0 down, had Ards on the ropes and conceded
a comical last minute winner. The Reds' centre back and goalkeeper Paul Rice
both miskicked attempted clearances to leave Harry McCourt a simple tap in.
Andy Beattie had given Ards an early lead. Harry McCourt made it 2 with a
splendid solo goal. Urged on by the Red Army Cliftonville came back.
Donaghy pulled one back before Jim McFadden snatched an equaliser. The Reds
looked set to win the game then before that disasterous mixup.

	Glentoran 1 Bangor 3

It was a great day for the Seasiders at Windsor. After a scoreless first half
Bangor tore Glentoran apart after the restart. Glendenning shot them into
an early second half lead. Magee made it 2 after a superb run and Hill headed
int he third from a corner. Stephen Douglas did snatch a consolation goal in
injury time but the final will be a North Down derby.

A Glenn Hunter goal after 74 minutes gave Linfield victory over Omagh at
Windsor Park. They remain a point ahead of Crusaders who won 3-0 at Carrick.
Derek Carroll, Roddy Collins and Michael Cash got the goals that keeps the
Crues in touch.

The big game was at Clandeboye. Hill gave Bangor the lead but 2 second half
goals from Joey Cunningham and Gary Peebles appeared to have won it for
Portadown. Glendenning poppd up for a late equaliser that damages Portadown's
title hopes. Ports now trail Linfield by 3 points with Bangor and Distillery
a futher 2 points adrift.

The other games were pretty meaningless but there was plenty of drama anyway.
4 players were sent off in Newry including both goalkeepers. Smith gave
Larne the lead but they needed a last minute penalty save from centre forward
Billy Drake to earn them the 3 points. Glentoran scored 8 at the Ballymena
showgrounds. This included a Gary McCartney hatrick. Jonathon Speake did
pull 2 back for the sky blues. Cliftonville hammered hapless Ballyclare
4-0.

Linfield will be crowned champions of the Irish League next saturday. It
was a day of drama as the title could have gone either way. The Blues faced
local rivals and champions Glentoran at the Oval. The Glens made all the early
running and deservedly led at the break through Stephen Douglas. Glenn Hunter
snatched an equaliser for the Blues after 55 minutes. Substitute Ritchie
Johnson showed ttrue Linfield grit by snatching the winner 7 minutes from
time. It was a sad day for the Glens watching their most hated rivals
taking their title on their own ground.

Crusaders surprisingly dropped 2 points against Ards. The day started
badly for the Crues when Kirk Hunter was dismissed for an off the ball
incident. Syd Burrows did give them a half-time lead. It looked promising
at this stage with Glentoran winning at the Oval but Darren Erskine snatched
an equaliser for Ards in the second half and the news from Mersey street
sealed Crusaders' fate. Barring a 10 goal victory over Omagh and a Linfield
defeat at home to Portadown the title is going to Windsor. The Crues will
have to settle for as European place.

A Cleland hat-trick ended any outside hopes Portadown entertained of winning
the title. Distillery were superior in every department and Ports will be
bitterly disappointed with this performance.

Bangor defeated Cliftonville to keep alive hopes of stealing the UEFA Cup
spot. Glendenning and 2 goals from McCallan saw off Cliftonville. Even
if Omagh don't manage to do the seassiders a favour they still have the

hit the post for the Bannsiders early on but they were quickly
overwhelmed. Ricky McEvoy scored with a 20 yard volley midway through
the first half. Brown made it 2 minutes later when he headed in Paul
Byrne's corner. Nigel Best's decision to send on Glendenning in the
second half proved a master stroke. 5 seconds after running onto the

Linfield duly collected the Gibson Cup and were crowned as league champions.
The champagne went a little flat at Windsor though as the Blues were shocked
by threee first half Portadown goals. Joey Cunningham tore the home defence to
shreds as he set up Sandy Fraser for 2 goals in a minute just after the half
hour. Gary Peebles made it 3 in first half injury time after good work by
Martin Russell. Still it was the Bluemen who celebrated afterwards. This was
Linfield's first major trophy in 4 years.

Crusaders failed to get the 10 goals they needed to clinch the title. This
was never on of course as Omagh are a very good side and indeed Crusaders
were glad of the 3 points that guarantees them a European place. Dunlop gave
the Crues the lead after 2 minutes but Omagh stormed back and equalised
through O'Neill. Gardener snatched the vital second half goal that sends
Crusaders back into Europe for the first time in 13 years.

2 goas each from Paul Byrne and Jonathon Magee were enough to give Bangor the
points at Taylors Avenue. Carrick Rangers were well beaten. The result was
not sufficient to earn a UEFA spot but Bangor still have another shot at Europe

			Irish Cup Final

			Ards 1 Bangor 1 aet

Well this is my first report from a real pressbox although I spent most of
the game in the stands. I was fortunate enough to get a press pass but the
pressbox at Windsor is probably the worst place to watch a football match.

Ards and Bangor must meet again after another 1-1 draw. This was a big
improvement on the first game. Ards took the lead in the first minute.
McDonald's free kick was headed on by McCourt, the unmarked Darren Erskine
scored from 4 yards. Bangor were rattled and failed to find their rhythm.
Ards were content to soak up the pressure but they were eventually worn down
as Bangor finally played some good football. Mark Glendenning headed the
equaliser after 35 minutes.

Bangor played most of the football in the second but Ards hung on and were
inspired by centre half and captain David Jeffrey. A snap shot from Paul
Byrne was well saved by Vance but extra time always looked likely. Erskine
was denied a second goal in the first minute of extra time but the extra 30
minutes failed to match the entertainment of the first 90. Both sides
appeared to settle for another replay. The sides must meet again next Tuesday
at Windsor and penalties will be used if necessary.

			Irish Cup Final 2nd replay

			Ards 0 Bangor 1

Bangor won their first ever major trophy last night. When John O'Connor
lifted the Irish cup just after 9.30pm it sparked off mass celebrations
at Windsor and back home in the seaside town.

This game will live long in the memory of Bangor fans who have suffered
so many barren years. It will quickly be forgotten by everyone else. Bangor
just about deserved their success over the 3 games.

There was little excitement in the game. Barry McCreadie hit the bar in the
first half but that was the only time Bangor threatened. Darren Erskine and
Harry McCourt had a couple of half chances for Ards. As the game wore on it
became obvious that it would take something special to separate the sides.
In the 89th minute we finally got it. Paul Byrne turned brilliantly and
scored with a low shot from 20 yards. There was no time for Ards to reply.

This was real Roy of the Rovers stuff. Having scooped all 4 player of the
year awards Paul Byrne scored the winning goal in the cup final. Nigel
Best also won manager of the year.

Manchester United 1 Aston Villa 1

The two top clubs in the premier league paid a fitting tribute to the late
Mervyn Brown with this game at Windsor. The 25,000 tickets sold out in an
hour which yet again emphahised the difference in the level of interest between
local and cross channel football on this island. The previous night at the
same venue the second replay of the Irish Cup Final failed to attract 5,000
people.

Both sides fielded some reserves but there were sufficient big names to keep
the crowd happy. Mickey Phelan gave United a first half lead much to the
delight of almost all the attendance. Dion Dublin was desperately unluckly
not to increase the lead when he hit both posts. Mark Bosnich denies
putting clingfilm across the goal. :-)

Villa came more into the game in the second half and equalised late on through
Dwight Yorke. United probably deserved to win but the result was irrelevant.

			Linfield 1 Bangor 1

Linfield and Bangor shared the first trophy on offer in Northern Ireland after
a 1-1 draw before a paltry crowd.
Bangor had the better of the early exchanges and Wesley Lamont made 2 superb
saves to deny Ricky McEvoy. Striker Gary Haylock a 35,000 buy from Shelbourne
failed to impress and his strikinmg partner and former Shelbourne colleague
Dessie Gorman was also well shackled by the Bangor defence. Bangor took
the elad midway through the first half when Glendenning crossed for Brown to
score with a 15 yard volley.
The second half also belonged to Bangor and they appeared to have the game
sewn up until Linfield won an 85th minute corner. Lee Docherty took the corner
and Mark Anderson headed home from 6 yards.

Just heard from a friend but he has no reason to lie. Linfield may get
a Euro reprieve. Dynamo Tbilisi have been accused of attempting to
bribe the match officials. They have a week to answer the charges.
If they are thrown out the Blues will face FC Copenhagen in the 1st
    round. Fingers crossed for Linfield.

Subject: Dynamo Tblisi banned after bribe attempt
Date: Fri, 3 Sep 93 7:55:39 PDT

BERNE, Switzerland, (UPI) -- Georgian soccer club Dynamo Tbilisi was
Friday expelled from the European Champions Cup by the UEFA Disciplinary
Commission.
The Georgians were found to have attempted to bribe the referee, two
linesmen and an UEFA official with dlrs 5,000 before their preliminary
round, second leg match against Northern Irish side Linfield on
Wednesday.
Dynamo won the match 2-1 and progressed 3-2 on aggregate into the
first round where it was due to play FC Copenhague of Denmark.
It is now likely that Copenhague will be given a bye into the second
round, but Tbilisi has until Sep. 6 to file an appeal.
If the appeal fails, Dynamo will also be banned from the next
European Champions Cup competition for which it qualifies.

I saw Larne v Glentoran on Saturday. The Glens ran out easy 4-0
winners with Neil Candlish and Gary Hillis getting 2 each. Former
Limerickj keeper John Grace was in goal for the visitors and he had a
sound game. Gerry McCabe was man of the match and Cork City may well
regret leaving him go. This win sen tthe Glens into the quarter finals
    of the Gold Cup.

The biggest cheer of the day came at half-time when it was announced
that Linfield were trailing 1-0 to Cliftonville at Windsor. The Blues
eventually lost 1-0. It shows that football rivalries takes precedence
    over religious rivalries in Belfast.

Bangor, Portadown and Glenavon all had big wins but I'm not sure who
reached the quarter finals of the tournament.

		UEFA Cup

		Crusaders 0 Servette 0

The foreigners rule hit Crusaders badly as they had to leave out most of their
Southern players. Manager Roy Walker made a comeback at 35 and Crusaders
played a defensive holding game. The Swiss side dominated the opening 20
minutes and should really have gone ahead but the Crues held out. The game
finished in reasonably entertaining but predictable scoreless draw. The most
telling statitic from the night was that Crusaders failed to get a shot on
goal.

		European Cup

		Linfield 3 FC Copenhagen 0

There have been many famous European nights at Windsor Park over the past
24 years but few if any will compare with this. Quite simply Linfield were
brilliant. They were given a lucky reprieve over the Tbilisi bribery scandal
and they grasped the opportunity with both hands. The much fancied Danish
champions were humiliated and their joy at facing the Blues rather than
Dynamo Tbilisi has now turned to tears.

FC Copenhagen actually had the better of the opening half hour. The highly
rated Martin Johansen missed two gilt edged opportunities. The game was
turned on its head in a four minute period just before the interval. After
38 minutes ace goal poacher Gary Haylock got away from the defence, ran through
on goal and beat Pederson with a low hard shot. Linfield poured forward now
and the Danes were rattled. Stephen Beattie curled over a free kick in the
42nd minute, centre-half John McConnell powered a header into the net. The
visitors were 2 down at half time and Pederson hadn't made a save.

Ritchie Johnson scored a superb individual goal after a defensive lapse on
the hour, The home fans never stopped singing all night and the visitors were
clearly intimidated. The last 30 minutes saw Linfield consolidating their
position. They defended well and ensured that the Danes would not have the
consolation of an away goal. It will be a different story in Copenhagen.
Linfield cannot play as well again but a three goal advantage should be
enough to ensure a place in the second round.

The league campaign in Northern Ireland began on Saturday. There were a couple
of mild surprises but the champions and favourites both won.

Linfield began the defence of their title in a determined mood. The
celebrations of the European victory 48 hours previous were postponed as they
set about demolishing Ards. Gary Peebles scored twice and Ritchie Johnson
added a 3rd in the first half at Castlereagh Park. The hoem side appeared to
be heading for total humiliation when keeper Paul Vance was sent off before
the interval but the Blues relaxed after the break and failed to add to their
tally.

Portadown are everybody's favourites this year but they had to wait until
the 80th minute before breaking down Distillery. Tony O'Gorman scored from
30 yards to ensure the 3 points.

Ron Manley scored the only goal as Cliftonville shocked cup holders Bangor
at Solitude. Frankie Parks' side were well worth this victory and they could
yet be surprise challengers for the title.

Glentoran were held to a dismal scoreless draw at home to Larne.

Ballinamallard made Cliftonville fight for their quarter final place on
Saturday. The home side were still licking their wounds after their 11-0
hammering by Glenavon but the gap between the B division and the top flight
is much narrower on the evidence of this game. The first 25 minutes were
pretty even. Cliftonville took the lead when the home keeper dropped the
ball onto the head of Ron Manley. A dreadful pass across his own goal by the
Ballinamallard full back McGettigan set up Marty McCann for the second
minutes later. The home side had much of the play after this but couldn't
break down the visitor's defence. Marty Tabb and former Donegal Celtic star
Joe Kerr were impressive. Mark Gill got the 3rd when the home keeper
dropped his shot into his own net. It was a full blooded cup tie which would
have beena lot closer but for the 3 soft goals conceded. The better
side won but dare I suggest they'll be heading for another semi final defeat.

BTW in case anyone is interested, Ballinamallard is 6 miles outside Enniskillen,
just off the Omagh road. The ground is a mile outside the village on the
Enniskillen road.
