    CLEAN OCEANS '97

Bobby Kennedy, Jr. will be the keynote speaker at Save Our Seas' second
International Clean Ocean Conference during the weekend of June 14 at
    Princeville Hotel on Kaua`i.

The conference, which explores ocean problems and solutions, will
celebrate 1997 as the International Year Of the Reef. Hawai`i's
Governor Benjamin Cayetano plans to attend, along with many scientists,
educators and policy makers. The weekend includes a coral monitoring
workshop on the reef in Hanalei Bay below the Princeville Hotel.

Among the presentations will be Ahupua'a (Polynesian Resource
Management System) by environmental educator and photographer David
Boynton. Chuck Blay (Oceanographer) will explain How Coral Reefs Play a
part in the Formation of Hawai`i's Beaches. Dr. Brian Tissot (UH Hilo,
Marine Science) will describe Community-based Managment of Coral Reefs.

Dr. James Maragos of the East West Center will talk on Coral Reefs and
Ocean Resource Management. Dr. Richard Grigg (UH-Oceanography) will
describe Anini Reef, Kaua`i, Past and Present. Dr. Cindy Hunter
(UH-Botany) will explain Video and Coral Reef Monitoring. Dr. John
McManus (ICLARM, Phillipines) will review the Coral Reefs of the World.

Participants in the conference and presenters will discuss their points
of view and plan for solutions, education and further research.

Please note that on Sunday the attendees will have field trips
available. These include scenic hikes, NaPali Coast boat rides,
kayaking on beautiful Hanalei Bay, or just a fun day at the beach.
