Bea Announces Ability For Bea Tuxedo To Coordinate
Distributed Transactions
Support Enables Microsoft Customers to Interoperate at Enterprise Level
with Open, Industry-Leading Transaction Middleware
SUNNYVALE, Calif., April 17, 1996, BEA Systems, Inc., the leading provider of enterprise
middleware solutions, today announced that BEA TUXEDO(TM) now provides
transaction-management support for Microsoft(R) SQL Server(TM) 6.5.
This capability comes as the result of Microsoft Corp.'s addition of support for the Open Group's
industry-standard XA transaction processing interface. Microsoft and BEA customers may now
use BEA TUXEDO to seamlessly coordinate distributed transactions in Microsoft SQL Server
6.5.
"We feel that it is a positive move by Microsoft to adopt the industry-standard XA interface in
SQL Server 6.5," said Joe Menard, vice president of product planning and strategy for BEA.
"Microsoft's support of XA interface now allows their SQL Server transactions to be coordinated
by BEA TUXEDO, our industry-leading transaction middleware. SQL Server can now be
included alongside other XA-complaint databases as part of a heterogenous distributed
transaction processing solution."
Through Microsoft's support of XA, customers can now also easily integrate transactions from
Microsoft SQL server and database products on and off the Windows NT(R) platforms, such as
Oracle, Sybase, Informix, and DB2. This enables customers to move from a two-tier approach,
which is limited in its ability to scale, distribute and easily change, to three-tier client/server
computing.
Three-tier client/server computing is an application development approach that partitions
application logic across three environments: the desktop computer, one or more application
servers, and one or more database servers. Three-tier applications extend the benefits of
client/server to the enterprise level by vastly improving performance, manageability, scalability,
and security.
BEA TUXEDO is the market-leading distributed transaction management software used to
provide the underlying messaging, application management and global system administration
needed to develop and deploy scaleable, three-tier client/server applications. BEA is using BEA
TUXEDO as the core of BEA's Distributed Application Framework which will provide the
infrastructure needed to ensure that applications running on open systems have the flexibility,
reliability, and maintainability to handle mission-critical data. This framework will enable
distributed mission-critical applications to seamlessly work with both legacy and client/server
environments.
BEA TUXEDO also provides a heterogeneous distribution platform enabling applications to be
distributed on Windows NT servers, UNIX servers, and many other systems, including IBM
mainframes. This provides customers with freedom of choice and protects their investment in
dissimilar hardware.
BEA SYSTEMS, INC.
BEA Systems, Inc. is the leading provider of enterprise middleware solutions. Founded in 1995,
BEA's mission is to enable distributed mission-critical applications that can seamlessly work with
both legacy and client/server environments. BEA develops markets, and supports the BEA
TUXEDO transaction management middleware and is providing a distributed application
framework, using enhanced transaction monitor technology and professional services. BEA will
continue to build its solution through development, partnerships, and acquisitions. Headquartered
in Calif., BEA is venture funded by Warburg, Pincus Ventures, L.P.
