111.0. "Snowboarding in New England" by VYGER::BRYCEG () Mon Jan 27 1997 07:17

    I'am due to fly out to Massachusetts on business in mid March and i
    was wondering if there is any good snowboarding available at this time
    of year ?

    I looked up some resorts in this area on the internet and it says that
    the season usually ends early/mid April.If this is the case then i have
    a chance of getting to at least one.

    Any suggestions ?

    I was also looking at the resort of Killington in Vermont which looks
    pretty good but i don't how far this is from our hotel which is in
    Marlborough just of the 495 - any ideas ?

    Thanks,

    Gordon

111.1we haven't had much snow lately...WRKSYS::SCHUMANNMon Jan 27 1997 09:219
Killington is about 3-3.5 hours from Marlborough. Closer areas are Loon
(2.5 hrs), Waterville Valley (2.5 hours), Wachusett (45 minutes).
Wachusett is much smaller than the others, and may have very poor conditions
in March. Wachusett also has long lift lines on weekends.
Killington is by far the largest of the four.

There are numerous other areas within 2-4 hours from Marlboro.

    I assume you are local to this area,if so given the choice where would
    you go ?

    What are the current conditions like ?.

    I was working in the mill/parker street 3 years ago in February
    and there was mountains of snow - in fact the plane got delayed because
    of snow at logan airport.

111.3no snow in MA :-(WRKSYS::SCHUMANNMon Jan 27 1997 12:1812
There's no snow on the ground here now.

I'd go to Loon or Waterville Valley. Good compromise between
driving distance and good mountain.

But... I'm not even a boarder, I'm only in here looking for
a board for my teenage daughter.

P.S. anybody got a double-tip board with bindings around 155-160 cm
that they want to sell reasonably cheap? If so, send mail.
111.4Best place in MarchFABSIX::D_SMITHMon Jan 27 1997 18:5011
I have been boarding in New England since the beginning of the season.
The best place is Sunday River in Maine but it takes about 4 hours drive.
Don't go to Killington. The terrain is not good for a boarder. It is spread
over many mountain tops and you will find yourself taking off the board
to walk a lot. Closest place that will have snow in March is Loon in N.H.
Perfect place is Jays Peak in up state Vermont. Jays has the most natural
snow fall than any ski area in New England. Last Year I went in late March
and it was snowing heavily. I'll give you directions, look me up when you
get hear.

111.5What about April ?VYGER::BRYCEGThu Feb 06 1997 08:4816

    Well it looks like the i will not be traveling in March it's more
    likely to be early/mid April (bummer).

    Will there be any resorts on offer at that time off year ?

    I know here in Scotland there's not much snow by April but i
    understand it can still snow then in New England.

    So what's my chances ?

    Depends on the spring...

    Last year they were skiing at Killington into June. This year hasnt
    been as good but despite the total lack of snowcover in and around Boston
    the conditions in Maine, N.H. and Vermont have improved a lot in the
    last month. They actually have powder even in central/southern N.H. Spring
    conditons can also be a lot of fun on a snowboard too.

    Sunday River tries to keep things going as late as possible as does
    Killington. Both are far enough north and have enough snow making and
    grooming to go way into spring even with a light year.

Hey,

  I am new in this bunch. Stratton (VT) is a great place to snowboard. They
are
just a little south of Killington (~2.5-3 hours from 495) and usually can keep
snow in the Spring. Bring your old board anyway. I wouldn't ride on anything
valuable in the Spring anywhere.
