Ultra Enterprise 10000 Server Shatters TPC-D Performance Record; Sun
Servers Prove SMP Leads MPP In Performance and Price/Performance January
28, 1997, 9:59 AM EST

 MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 28, 1997--Today Sun
Microsystems, Inc. roared past the competition with record-breaking
performance results and industry-leading price/performance for
decision-support applications. Making a definitive statement to the
industry - with the Ultra(TM) Enterprise(TM) 10000 server, Sun has proved
that SMP (symmetric multiprocessing) systems truly scale and that customers
can build a high-performance, easier to manage single system solution at a
fraction of the cost of MPP (massively parallel processing) systems.

Squashing the myth that MPP systems are required for high-end data center
performance, the Ultra Enterprise 10000 server with the Solaris(TM)
operating environment delivered the industry's best performance bar none -
SMP or MPP. The Ultra Enterprise 10000 server outperformed all competitors
on the Transaction Processing Performance Council Benchmark D (TPC-D) at
300 gigabytes (SF 300), using Oracle 7.3 - posting nearly 20 percent better
performance - at one-third the cost of the nearest competitor. In addition,
Sun also reported new results for the Ultra Enterprise 6000 server -
surpassing the competition by posting industry-leading price-performance
results that deliver up to four times the price/performance of MPP systems
from IBM, NCR and Pyramid.

"The Ultra Enterprise 10000 system erases any doubts about SMP
scalability," said John Shoemaker, vice president and general manager of
Sun's enterprise server and storage group. "Customers looking at clusters
or MPP systems - which are inherently difficult systems to manage - will
re-evaluate their choices because with the Ultra Enterprise 10000 server
they get not only top performance, but the reduced complexity and increased
manageability benefits of a single system - all at a substantially lower
cost."

Sun's Ultra Enterprise 10000 server set record results in a critical TPC-D
measure: 300-gigabyte database performance. At 300 gigabytes, the Ultra
Enterprise 10000 server in a 64-processor configuration has TPC-D power of
1787.9 QppD@300GB and a TPC-D throughput of 1122.3 QthD@300GB, for a TPC-D
price/performance of $3,562 QphD@300GB. Previously numbers near this level
were achieved only in more expensive clustered configurations.

Competitively, NCR has posted the next best performance result with a TPC-D
power of 1501.1 - this took an MPP system with 160 CPUs and a five-year
lifetime, total system cost of $16,821,210. The Ultra Enterprise 10000
five-year lifetime, configuration price tag rolls in at a mere $5,045,645.
(See chart for detailed results.)

Ultra Enterprise 6000 Delivers Industry-leading Price/performance- Sun
Servers Take First and Second for SMP Systems

In addition to the results posted by the new Ultra Enterprise 10000 server,
Sun also reported new TPC-D numbers for the Ultra Enterprise 6000 server
using the recently introduced 250 MHz UltraSPARC(TM) CPU modules. With a
24-processor configuration at 300 gigabytes, the Ultra Enterprise 6000
system with the Solaris 2.5.1 operating environment reported TPC-D power of
1006.0 QppD@300GB and a TPC-D throughput of 588.0 QthD@300GB, for an
industry-leading TPC-D price-performance of $3,447 Qphd@300GB. This
price/performance number is significantly better than results for MPP
systems from IBM, NCR and Pyramid at nearly one-fourth the price per unit
of performance.

Complementing the record-breaking pure performance results of the Ultra
Enterprise 10000 server, the Ultra Enterprise 6000 system posted the
industry's second best TPC-D performance numbers for an SMP system. As a
result, Sun has the number one and two spots for SMP systems on the TPC-D
benchmark. First, the Ultra Enterprise 6000 server posted the first single
node result at 300GB - and then the Ultra Enterprise 10000 system took that
mark and almost doubled it. In what is usually thought of as a leapfrog
game of fast chips, software optimization and system tuning, Sun has
distanced itself from the data center pack. Competitively, Sun owns this
category as no other vendor has published benchmarks for an SMP system at
300GB. Both the Ultra Enterprise 10000 and the Ultra Enterprise 6000
servers were running Oracle 7.3.3.

"Oracle is pleased with these results because they clearly demonstrate that
Oracle7.3 database on a Sun Ultra Enterprise Server are a strong
combination for large data warehouse systems," said Gary Bloom, senior vice
president, Oracle Corporation. "This combination of Oracle and Sun(TM)
technologies substantially raises the bar for the size of system that can
be supported with an SMP technology, providing systems that are easy to
manage and maintain at a fraction of the cost previously required to obtain
similar performance."

The Ultra Enterprise 10000 and Ultra Enterprise 6000 are two of five
servers in a family, designed for department and data center computing
environments, that scale from one to 64 processors. The servers have
interchangeable components that gives customers the flexibility to
redistribute capacity across a range of systems for unmatched investment
protection.

"Sun continues to demonstrate its ability to deliver systems for large
enterprise applications and enterprise databases with its high-end Ultra
Enterprise machines," said Jean S. Bozman, research manager for
International Data Corp.'s Unix and Server Operating Environments service
in Mountain View, Calif. "Sun's ability to support very large databases is
going to be key to the success of its servers as alternate platforms for
mainframe-class applications."

The Ultra Enterprise 10000 configuration consisted of 64 processors and 16
gigabytes of Memory with 46 SPARCstorage(TM) Array 214 RSMs. The Ultra
Enterprise 6000 configuration consisted of 24 processors and 12 gigabytes
of Memory with 10 SPARCstorage Array Model 112 and 6 SPARCstorage Array 214
RSMs. Both configurations will be available in May 1997.

The TPC-D benchmark simulates an environment for decision support
activities such as data warehousing. This complex benchmark, which includes
17 typical query types run by users, exercises a system's breadth of
components associated with such environments. In short, the test
demonstrates overall system performance for real-world applications.

Since its inception in 1982, a singular vision, "The Network Is The
Computer (TM)," has propelled Sun Microsystems, Inc., (NASDAQ "SUNW"), to
its position as a leading provider of hardware, software and services for
establishing enterprise-wide intranets and expanding the power of the
Internet. With more than $7 billion in annual revenues, Sun can be found in
more than 150 countries and on the WorldWide Web at http://www.sun.com .

SUBJECT: HP PUMPS UP ITS UNIX CLUSTER SUITE
SOURCE: Computerworld via First! by Individual, Inc.
DATE: February 9, 1997
INDEX: [7]
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Computerworld via Individual Inc. : Hewlett-Packard Co. is enhancing the
application availability and systems management capabilities of its suite of
Unix clustering products.

The enhancements aim to give users simplified application management
within a cluster and more protection against server failure for applications
running on the Internet. The management enhancements will be available by
the end of the second quarter in a new version of HP ClusterView software.

They include drag-and-drop capabilities for moving applications between
different systems or between servers in separate buildings. This allows
administrators to move applications off one server toanother for performing
tasks such as upgrading operating systems.

HP will also integrate performance monitoring tools such as HP GlancePlus
and PerfView with ClusterView. The tools will give users system-performance
monitoring information directly from ClusterView.

``Capabilities like these are very important for us,'' saidBarry
Flachsbart, vice president of information systems at Skyway Freight Systems,
Inc.in Watsonville, Calif.

``We run a pretty continuous operation here, and it is important for us to
be able to manage things remotely and to do things like adding or changing
processors [in a cluster] without bringing the whole system down,'' he said.

HP also announced availability of a new Network Connection Policy Manager
that lets administrators balance and man- age client access to the network.
For example, Internet requests from hundreds of browser connections can be
balanced automatically across the nodes of a cluster.

On the high-availability side, HP said it will release new versions of its
MC/ServiceGuard and MC/LockManager clustering software that includes support
for net-based applications.

The software, due in the second quarter, will include support for a
feature called ``campus cluster'' that allows systems as far as two
kilometers apart to be clustered together.

Network Connection Policy Manager starts at $1,000. The enhanced version
of HP ClusterView will start at $1,500, and MC/ServiceGuard with campus
cluster support will start at $6,000.

SUBJECT: HP, HITACHI TEAM ON HP-UX TO ADDRESS RELIABILITY
SOURCE: PC Week via First! by Individual, Inc.
DATE: February 12, 1997
INDEX: [6]
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

PC Week via Individual Inc. : Hewlett-Packard Co. and Hitachi America Ltd.
are partnering to develop new high- end capabilities for forthcoming
versions of HP-UX.

The two companies are working on enhancements to make the operating system
more reliable, available and serviceable by improving the way it leverages
the power of the hardware, said Mike Foreman, senior business manager for
HP's Computer Systems Organization, in Cupertino, Calif.

The new version of HP-UX will include features that make the operating
system more reliable by notifying users if it is failing and, if it does
fail, recovering quickly via failover capabilities to another server, said
Foreman. It also will support hot-swappable processors and I/O cards, he
added.

HP and Hitachi are calling the jointly developed software Dynamic Loadable
Kernel Module technology, which enables PC Cards to be removed and inserted
while a system is still running, according to officials at Hitachi, based in
Tokyo.

HP's first goal in strengthening the high-end capabilities of the
operating system is to provide an incentive for mainframe customers--still
about 30 percent of HP's market--to migrate to HP-UX, Foreman said.

"Typically, if a mainframe user's system goes down, it means the whole
business fails," said Foreman. Many mainframe customers want to downsize to
save costs but won't do it without a highly available operating system, he
added.

The new software will be integrated into the 64-bit Version 11.0 of HP-UX
due in the fall.

The enhancements also will be integrated into HP's implementations of the
next- generation 3DA Unix architecture it is developing with SCO, of Santa
Cruz, Calif.

HP, of Palo Alto, Calif., can be reached at (408) 447-1587 or www.hp.com.

                                 GOOD NEWS!

When Amazon.com, the world's largest on-line bookstore, discovered their
32-bit Sun SPARC platform could not adequately support their high growth
rate, they replaced the Sun platform with two AlphaServer systems running
 DIGITAL UNIX...

"We're using the AlphaServers as Web servers to run our key
online electronic commerce systems over the Internet as well
as our entire range of back office and financial applications,"
said Jeff Bezos, CEO and Founder of Amazon.com.

See "In the News" Section for more information.

Also, a recent Datapro Report Concludes DIGITAL AlphaServers "Excellent
 Choice" as Mainframe Alternatives.

** DIGITAL Breaks Through the Gigaflop Barrier! **
Dr. Don Dossa, Consulting Engineer, Workstation Engineering

For the first time, a uniprocessor desktop workstation has broken the
1 Gigaflop performance barrier. Using a DIGITAL AlphaStation 500/500 and
DIGITAL's Fortran90 compiler, a program that performs polynomial functional
evaluation hit the 1 Gigaflop performance level. This was possible because
the system design of the AlphaStation 500/500 is optimized for maximum
utilization of the Alpha 21164A chip architecture's unrivalled floating
point performance, and the Fortran90 compiler was able to generate code,
without the use of any directives, to realize the exceptional performance
capabilities of the system. This work was done on a currently shipping
workstation running DIGITAL UNIX 4.0 and the current version of the FORTRAN
 90 compiler.

Polynomial evaluations are found in many types of numerically intense
programs, such as CFD, FEA, image processing, Monte Carlo, molecular
 dynamics, and numerical integrations.

Under special conditions, a maximum rate of 1.02 Gigaflops was achieved.

Dr. Don Dossa, Consulting Engineer in DIGITAL's Workstation Engineering
Group, demonstrated his work on a desktop gigaflop system at the
SuperComputing 96 conference in Pittsburgh in November.

This achievement is a world record for uniprocessor desktop computers.

 5. IN THE NEWS
    ===========

 ** Amazon.com Press Release **
    Ken McDonnell, Corporate Public Relations

The rush for Internet Gold is in full swing as commercial prospectors stake
their claims on the World Wide Web. The majority of these companies gather
little more than a few flakes of gold dust to show for their trouble.
Amazon.com is an exception. The Seattle-based retailer quickly hit
virtual pay dirt on the Internet and is now facing that most hoped
for of "problems": how to support exponential growth.

According to Jeff Bezos, CEO and founder of Amazon.com., the
world's largest on-line bookstore, "After a relatively short time in
business, our sales far exceeded our projections, forcing us to
adopt a very aggressive growth stance. The extensive Web server
capabilities of the DIGITAL AlphaServer series, coupled with its
smooth upgrade path, provided the perfect solution for our rapid
 growth curve."

"Old models for estimating sales break down in the new realm of
online commerce," Bezos said. "With the Web, it's hard to predict
just what your growth path will look like, so you need the ability
to ramp up capacity very quickly. This is one of the things that
attracted us to the highly scaleable AlphaServer platform."

Amazon.com initially purchased Web servers from Sun
Microsystems because, at the time (mid-1994), most Web sites were
running on the Sun platform and Bezos wanted to minimize his firm's
technology risk. He soon discovered, however, that the 32-bit Sun
SPARC platform would not adequately support Amazon's unexpectedly
 high growth rate.

By the end of 1994, Amazon.com had replaced the Sun platform
with two AlphaServer 2000 Model 5/300 systems running Digital UNIX.
"We're using the AlphaServers as Web servers to run our key online
electronic commerce systems over the Internet as well as our entire
range of back office and financial applications," Bezos said.

 Amazon.com relies on each AlphaServer 2000 system's
one-gigabyte memory address space to do high-speed indexing. "Our
lookup time is critical so we keep our entire index of 1.1 million
titles in RAM," said Ivan Vazquez, Manager of Technical Lead Systems
Network Operations Center at Amazon.com. "This is facilitated by the
very large memory capacity of Digital's 64-bit Alpha systems."

The AlphaServer systems have proven their reliability again and
again, keeping Amazon.com open for business 24 hours a day. "For an
Internet operation, system up-time is a prerequisite to doing
business at all," Vazquez stresses. "If our Web server goes down,
the entire store is closed. We can't afford that."

** UNIX Market Continues to Expand According to IDC **

The Unix systems market continued to expand during 1996, based on preliminary
data for the calendar year from International Data Corporation. Unix systems
revenue grew 12 percent worldwide to $34.3 billion as reported in IDC's new
research bulletin, Unix Systems Market: 1996 Year In Review. Worldwide Unix
systems revenue includes data on the Unix PCs, Unix RISC workstations, LAN
Servers, midrange systems, and large systems markets.

"The Unix RISC workstation market was the only segment to experience a
revenue decline," said Jean Bozman, research manager for IDC's Unix and
Client Server Operating Environments program. "IDC believes low-end Intel
servers running Windows NT have begun to adversely impact low-end Unix
 workstation sales."

Unix systems still enjoy a wide power range with offerings from low-end
workstations to large servers compared to Windows NT products. Areas of
strength for Unix systems include use as Internet, application, and database
servers, as well as online transaction processing machines that approach
mainframe reliability. Many system vendors offer both Unix and Windows NT
servers, differentiating systems by application requirements. However, to
avoid market confusion, vendors over time will have to emphasize the
performance and ability of higher-priced Unix midrange systems. IDC
believes 64-bit Unix computing will be a key differentiator.

 Expectations

-- Unix servers will continue to be more scaleable than NT servers for the
next two years. They will also be able to cluster in more ways for high-
availability, disaster recovery and for scaling large applications over
  several compute nodes.

-- Mixed Unix/NT environments are likely to prevail in large enterprises
for the remainder of the decade. Large enterprises will deploy each type of
server based on the applications or databases needed.

-- Competition from low-end Windows NT servers will increase in 1997,
impacting the growth of low-priced Unix RISC servers. Unix vendors that
differentiate their products by demonstrating broader capabilities and
  higher performance will be successful.

The Unix Systems Market: 1996 Year In Review bulletin (#B12846) can be
purchased by contacting Cheryl Toffel at 800-343-4952.
