    Is ther a position regarding The WOW Laptop's and backups?
    Has any one got a reliable process?
    I have been trying to get an Adaptec AHA-1640A PC-Card SCSI controller
    to work with a TLZ07-DX. But cannot restore !!!!

492.1How about a network.NWD002::SKRABUT_LALarry SkrabutMon Feb 24 1997 20:415
    	What I have done is to use a network device and back up to a tape
    device. Now for restoring, I have to FIS or built the WOW laptop to the
    point where Network is working. I haven't done a full, but I have
    restore some minor files this way. I don't see why a full or registry
    file would not work.
492.2What software do you use??SCASS1::RGREENETREKIETue Feb 25 1997 10:542
    What software are you using. I have used a TLZ06 and Arcada backup
    v 1.0 and v1.1 and Cheyan backup v2.0 on desktop machines.
492.3ez-scsi 4.0-1KAOFS::W_GILROYTue Feb 25 1997 11:567
    I am using the software Adaptec supplied EZ-SCSI ver 4.0 and I pulled
    down 4.0-1 from their WEB site EZ40UP.EXE

    I have used Colorado Backup with same results as EZ-SCSI,
    Acrada ver 1.0. cannot fine a drive.
    Nova backup ver ?? cannot configure the tape drive

492.4Who has the Tape drive?NWD002::SKRABUT_LALarry SkrabutTue Feb 25 1997 14:594
    	Maybe, are you trying to load this S/W on the Laptop and find the
    drive on the net? Well, what I do is to use the system that has the
    drive and software and then backup over the net from the Laptop to the
    stated system.
492.5Remote BackupsSWAM1::WOLFE_LETue Feb 25 1997 21:5215
     Larry's got the right idea. You must load the Arcada or Conner backup
    software on the system with the tape drive. The system will then detect
    the tape (as long as Win95 has the tape in the configuration manager) and
    the backup software will default to this tape for backups. When
    starting the backup, select network, and browse for your Hinote. Select
    this as the target and begin the backup.

    place the Hinote in the same workgroup as your Win95 PC. If you're using
    NT, you must add the tape under add SCSI adapters and tapes for Arcada
    to detect and use it. Then add your Hinote to the same domain. If
    using IP, be sure and use the same subnet for both. It's much easier to
    run IP and NETBEUI, and the NETBEUI browse master will just pick up the
    Hinote.

492.6No network keep it simple!KAOFS::W_GILROYWed Feb 26 1997 12:3010
    Gentlemen:
    I am trying to keep this very simple.
    no network just standalone laptop with a scsi adapter attached to a
    TLZ07. I can perform backups. It is the restore I cannot perform.
    Or There is a configuration error which is not writing the save set
    name on the tape or the backup software is unable to read the tape for
    some reason.

    Is or has any one else experienced this problem?

492.7Well lets see?NWD002::SKRABUT_LALarry SkrabutWed Feb 26 1997 19:5429
    	Have you read the README.txt for EZ_SCSI 4.01?
   There seems to be an issue with speed of starting the restore?, Also
    our TZ07 is not listed in there qualified list.

    	What version is you PC bios v1.08 is listed on there web site:

    http://websvr1.adaptec.com/support/desktopsupp.html#SCSI

    	It seems that the win95mpd.exe is not for your 1640a card, it is
    for most other Adaptec card though. BTW they just pull the Feb 18 97
    release of this driver and the world is now waiting for a re-release of
    it.

    	Have you taken the backup from your laptop and looked at it on
    another system, is it really there or did the drive just go through the
    motions? Can you format this tape drive? Does it have the latest F/W on
    the drive, It is orderable from SSB. Does this drive work on another
    system running either Adaptec S/W or Seagate/Cheyenne/or what ever?

    	I don't have a PC AHA-1640A to used, I do have the latest version
    of Seagate 2.0 ($$$$), I also have EZ-SCSI 4.01 from upgrades via the
    web, I started at 4.0c. Let look at this and narrow down what does work
    and what doesn't. Maybe if I have the time, I will do a B/U on my home
    system and a minor restore from EZ-SCSI to check out there S/W, but all
    of my hardware is different and is on there list, 2940UW and EXB-8700-
    w/latest f/w all around.

    						Just helping, Larry S.

492.8answer to .7KAOFS::W_GILROYThu Feb 27 1997 18:2315
    No I did not read the README.TXT I did not see it when I down loaded
    the upgrade.

    The Bios of this NiNote is 1.41

    I took the tape to a A2100 NT system and a Celebris 5100
    and nither system could read the format of the tape. I checked 2 tapes
    formatted on with the laptop configuration

    The EZ-SCSI and Colorado backup stated they formated the tape and the
    tape did move in the drive. The TLZ07 is at the latest F/W 55? I left
    it in the office today.
    The TLZ07 was installed on a vax 4000 system and performed properly
    with other tapes.

492.9I meant the PC Card BiosNWD002::SKRABUT_LALarry SkrabutFri Feb 28 1997 07:444
    	The PC bios I meant (lack of typing) was for the PC Card, AHA 1640.

    	Do you have another PC running W95 that has a Adaptec SCSI in it? If so
    have you tried the EZ-SCSI program in it?
492.10Question and more infoNWD002::SKRABUT_LALarry SkrabutSun Mar 02 1997 09:1856
    Question: Is this PCMCIA card of your a AHA-1640B or a APA-1460??

    Per Adaptec, the AHA-1640 is a Microchannel which is a RISC IBM bus?
    the APA-1460 is a PCMCIA (PC Card).

    	If you do indeed have a APA-1460, There is also a Win95MPD.exe that
    can be updated of this card, I don't see any BIOS update thou.

    File: win95mpd.EXE
    Date: 02/26/97
    Size: 74,436
    Description: v1.3 Windows 95 drivers for the Adaptec AHA-151x/152x, AIC
    6260/6360/6365/6370, APA-14xx, AHA-154x, AHA-2940,
    AHA-3940, AHA-2920/A and AIC-78x0. The Miniport drivers dated 2/18/97
    have been temporarily replaced with the drivers from our 4/96
    release. The updated drivers will be posted as soon as available.

    http://websvr1.adaptec.com/support/BBS_Portable.html#1460

    Also if you use the REAL Mmode driver "ASPI", There is an update last
    Sept 96.

    File: ASPI32.EXE
    Date: 09/23/96
    Size: 255,488
    Description: ASPI layer for Windows 95 and Windows NT. This includes
    updates to the following files: WINASPI.DLL, WNASPI32.DLL,
    APIX.VXD, ASPIENUM.VXD, ASPI32.SYS, and WOWPOST.EXE. Simply execute
    ASPI32.EXE to install/upgrade the ASPI drivers.
    Requires that you have an Adaptec SCSI host adapter installed or
    Adaptec EZ-SCSI 4.0 installed.

    http://websvr1.adaptec.com/support/BBS_EZSCSI.html#EZSCSI

    	Again this might be noise but Sometimes for the S/W to work, one
    must have the latest drivers/FW involved.

    BTW there is a F/W update to the Ultra to 1.42 that is available either
    from internal/external Digital FTP/BBS site or try this site:

    ftp://phxmcs.phx.dec.com/Hinote/

    The Card is a n Adaptec PCCard SlimSCSI APA-1460A
    I cannot see a firmware rev on the card or via WIN95 showing the
    properties of the card.
    I will try the 1.42 HiNote update.
    I have looked in adaptec's web page but there are not many updates which
    include/state the APA-1640A.

492.12What does device manager see??SCASS1::RGREENETREKIETue Mar 04 1997 18:5311
    I have a question about your backup on the tlz07. When the backup is
    ran do you preform a verify pass. The reason I ask is it posible to
    think you are writing to a tape and do nothing but move tape and write
    nothing. For the card and drive to work properly you should be able to
    see both in the device manager. If you do not, you have a problem and
    backups will not work. If the card shows up and the tape drive does
    not the backup software may not be installed properly. If the card
    does not showup in the device manager you may have too much of the dos
    / windows 3.1 software loaded by Autoexec.bat and config.sys. You may
    need to comment out the dos driver loads and then see if windows 95
    will see it.
492.13Verify is on!KAOFS::W_GILROYWed Mar 05 1997 20:268
    Yes. The default has selected the verify. When the backup completes the
    verify starts total time for BU&V is 1 1/4 hours.The strange part is if
    I restore a file right after the backup completes all is fine. The
    problem as stated before is when I close the backup utility then restart
    it to restore a file I cannot see the backed up save set.

    .9 Yes I know of an other Laptop with the same configuration having
    the same problems.
492.14I do it this wayHLFS00::EMPEL_WWillem van Empel MCSD GoudaThu Mar 06 1997 00:5741
    Backup methode for HiNotes used in Gouda, the Netherlands.

    Our WOW HiNotes are all using drivespaced disks.
    This hostdrive is G, and the drivespaced drive are C,D and E.
    To keep it simple, I only backup the drivespace hostdrive.
    No open files, no long files names, and so on. Only the
    systemfiles needed for booting and the drivespace.00x files.

    The hardware I use :
    A DIGITAL PCMCIA SCSI card (Adaptec), a TLZ07-dx, TLZ06-CB tapes and
    TMATE software. This software is owned by Trantor, wich is a Adaptec
    company.

    Backup Procedure :
    Install Tmate software on drivespace hostdrive.
    Boot from a DOS 7 (W95) floppy with PCMCIA and SCSI drivers.
    Configure Tmate with a HP dat drive, no TLZ drivers included.
    Start Tmate, and backup only the hostdrive.
    Backup time with a 1.2 Gb harddisk ~1 hour.
    Backup time with a 540 Mb disk ~ 25 minutes.
    Restore time with a 540 Mb disk ~ 30 minutes.

    Restore Procedure :
    After replacing harddisk, boot from DOS 7 flop.
    Fdisk new drive and format it.
    Take Tmate flop and install the software on the harddisk.
    Start Tmate, configure it, and restore from Dat tape.

    Only disadvantage :
    New tapes or tapes used on other sw platforms, have to be erased on a
    NT machine.

    Cheers,

    The Tmate copy I received was included with the Adaptec 1515 I bought.
    So, try Adaptec.

492.18Backup Hinote'sMAS::OREILLYFri Mar 21 1997 20:5516
    I have a sucessfully (unfortunately proven twice)backed up and restored
    my hinote to a network drive at home. And now have an automated
    (using system agent) backup every night of my whole drive!
    I created a batch file with the following command:
    xcopy c: z:/s/e/v/c/k/r/h/y where z: is the network drive
    xcopy/? will tell you what all the qualifiers are (/y is used to
    overwrite my previous nights backup !)
    actually i'm alternating between 2 drives each night now
    (m-w-f-su to drive a and tu-th-sa to drive b )
    After replacing the hdd in the hinote, i did have to load win95
    from floppy (21 of 'em) then adding pcmcia services and net card
    then mapping network drive and using same command (reversing drive
    letters) then rebooting a couple of time due to registry files
    being restored from backup... Good Luck

492.19XCOPY32 for LFN'sSWAM1::WOLFE_LESun Mar 23 1997 23:135
      Should'nt this be done with XCOPY32 to preserve your long file names?
    The last time someone brought a Hinote note to me that used XCOPY, all
    the shortcuts and long directories had ~1 with the DOS filenames.

492.20Backups now workingKAOFS::W_GILROYWed Mar 26 1997 11:2815
    Thanks to all who contributed to this note. I have succeded in making
    the backup work!

    I had to take the TLZ07-DA out of its cover and move switch 7 to the
    opposit position. This changed the drive type from a TLZ07 to a Python
    drive.

    I backed you a few directories shutdown the EZSCSI backup utility and
    restarted it. This time when I chose restore the tape drive read the
    tape and listed the save set I had created.

    Thanks again to all who contributed.
