Is this because the warriors of Loughrea are famed far & wide for their skillet arms? Or for their skillet hand-to-hand combat? Enquiring minds want to know... & obtw, what great skillet debate that was burning in ::DIGITAL? I vaguely remember something, but that file seems unavailable as I write... | |||||

the great skillet debate was what caused the moderators to put the mockers on the memorable nuwerdz string. There is a picture of a skillet in the window of the pub. It is a traditional metal cooking pot with a lid used for cooking over the turf fire. Electricity came to the more isolated parts of rural Ireland in the 1950's. I have a childhood memory of my grandmother cooking a stew in a skillet by the fire. She was over 80 at the time, and although they already had electricity in the house she didn't trust it too much and preferred to occupy herself sitting by the fire preparing vegetables and watching the pot.
