1140.0. "Abbreviations to be solved" by BPSOF::GYONGYOSI () Wed May 31 1995 02:37

    I can't find the origin of the abreviations "aka" (sometimes written
    as "a.k.a." and TFSO. (The substance of the latter is clear for me...)

    What/who is W9NCD often referred to in these notes as an expert in
    linguistic topics? (I don't think that my guess [an american amateur
    {HAM} radio callsign assigned to the lakes region] were the right one...
    My one is [nomen est omen - being a deluted telegraphy {CW} fan] HA5CW.)
                                                                        ^^

aka, a.k.a. - also known as

W9NCD - Webster's 9th New Concise (?) Dictionary
1140.2CONCISE - how munh?BPSOF::GYONGYOSIWed May 31 1995 05:377
    Re "CONCISE": What size/how many volumes W9NCD has?

    Whenever I'm in trouble I use a local edition "Academy" dictionary,
    2+1 volumes both ways, 1500 to 1800 A4 size pages, 6 pt.tipefaces each.
    Vol 1-2: "street" words expressions, Vol 3: technical supplement.

    Concise probably means less than 5 volumes :-)

    NSOED = New Shorter Oxford English Dictionary

    where Shorter means two enormous volumes, on paper that's bigger
    than A4 and is nearly rice paper thickness, with a small point size
    print, and the cost is around $90.

1140.4isn't the "C" for Collegiate?DYPSS1::DYSERTBarry - Custom Software DevelopmentWed May 31 1995 06:503
    I think W9NCD is actually Webster's 9th New Collegiate Dictionary.

    Re .3:
    I don't know how thin rice paper is... But the Volumes 1-2 of the
    "Academy" dictionary are 3 - 3 1/2" while the technical supplement
    "only" 2" thick.
    2 x (2 +1) = total of 6 volumes and not 5! :-)
    The price is almost the same, some 8k HUF (70 USD).

    Re .2:
    You answered my unwritten question explaining the abbreviation "OED".
    Thanks

    Yes, C in WxNCD stands for Collegiate!
