This question is posed to you on behalf of a friend.
She works in a school providing 1:1 tuition of children who
have particular need of this type of schooling. The range of
reasons includes: slow learners, disruptive behaviour,
gifted children, catching up after illness, preparation for
special tests, etc.
At the moment the area of the building in which she works is
labelled the 'Special Needs Unit'. Rightly or not, this has
acquired the reputation for being for the dim wits. So
children are very resentful of being referred to her for 1:1
tuition.
She would like to rename the unit so that the children accept
or even welcome referral. In addition the school should then
be able to trade on its abbility to offer specialist 1:1
tuition for those who need it. This will be in contrast to
the perception that a school with a large 'Special Needs
Unit' is a sink for the educational no-hopers.
So what suggestions do you have for a name to replace
'Special Needs Unit'?

Nick, I would think that what ever name it is given, it would soon
gain the same reputation.
I which case, why not just call it the One-2-One school?

I agree with .-1. It's not just the great unwashed, it's the teachers
too that assume Special Needs means Remedial. I asked a school I was
visiting about their Special Needs facilities, as my son is - according
to the ed pychs - 4 or 5 years ahead of his peers in many fields. the
teacher looked at me pityingly and said `slow learner is he?'.

You've done it again with the suggestions made so far.
I'm looking forward to seeing loads more.
