1119.0. "Installer?" by SWETSC::WESTERBACK (Mai pen rai!) Tue Nov 01 1994 06:10

    Hi all,

I have a question that I need a native English speaker to answer:

For a form we are putting together we have a field where you should
enter the name of the person who will install a software.

Question: How should we label this field, (call this person)?
Is Installer a correct English word, or is there a better one?

    Thanks,
    Hans

(if you're not sure about a certain construct, try another ...)

Installed by: <name here>

    I think "Installer" is correct.

    "A software" (as written in .0) isn't.

"Installer" is correct; but, given that many Macintosh programs are
installed by programs named "<Program-Name> Installer" or, often,
simply "Installer," and many PC programs are installed by programs
named "INSTALL.EXE," the single word is ambiguous. Clearly, there are
problems of clarity; otherwise, why would the basenoter have asked for
    assistance?

I am a native English speaker, and I have used "installer" recently
in documentation, but this was in a context (answering installation
questions) where it couldn't be confused with a piece of software.

I have a vague rememberance from hundreds of years ago when I was
at school that we were given a rule-of-thumb that if it was a person
doing it then you should use the "or" ending, while if it was a thing
then you should use the "er" ending. I have no idea where this "rule"
    came from.

    Thanks for your input!

I think we'll go for Installer, there won't be any ambiguity
about whether a person or a piece of software is intended.
(This is an internal form for ordering software application
    installations from IS/OSC).

Re .6: The reason I asked was merely that we weren't sure if
the word installer was at all appropriate in this context...
In Swedish the word is indeed "installatr", but we couldn't
recollect seeing installer being used in English. It is in the
dictionary, but the description wasn't that exhaustive.

In Dutch this word (installateur) is more likely to refer to a person installing
heating, water or electricity in a building. It could be used in the context you
mention, but would not be my word of choice. Kind of calling a CS engineer a
mechanic (which I have been, both).

    From your ruler, of course.
