How did crowd surfing in the pit at a rock concert get to be called "moshing"? A recent article on Woodstock '94 contended it was a representation of the sound emanating from a pit full of mud, people, etc. I would have called the activity "oofing" or "arging" if that were true. Any other suggestions? How is the word pronounced?

I believe the term "mosh pit" pre-dates Woodstock II by several years. "Mosh" rhymes with "nosh", or "slosh." andrew |
