1075.0. "here's lookin' at ya." by AKOCOA::MACDONALD () Tue Nov 23 1993 10:36
So, you guessed it; blindness. From Latin caecum (cecum?) My
dictionary is at home. In medical parlance, the caecum is the "blind
end" ( the stomach-connected end) of the intestine if a recall correctly.
Seems an odd notion, since for me it least the immediate corollary is
the "sighted end" of the intestine---so here's lookin' at ya.
Re reply 11, I don't have the original sentence with me but it was
pretty straight-forward, as in, " David Dinkin's cecity regarding the
true extent of his opposition among black voters in NY was truly
amazing." Or some such. And yes, one could argue as I do, that this is
show-off journalism, though for the presumably educated audience
of that magazine, perhaps not outrageous.
I usually enjoy being challanged by a writer, but the difference
between being challanged and being treated condescedingly is often
a fine one. It depends I suppose on the authors intent, about which one
can know very little in print.
This *has* been an interesting topic. May this and other
employee-interest notes files never cease to exist!

| Re .0: If I remember correctly, the caecum is not the stomach-connected
end of the intestine, but the other one. Blind or not? That's for you
to say.

| The caecum is a "blind" pouch in the large intestine, into which the
ileum opens.

| Re .3: So, if it's in the large intestine, it's much closer to the anus
than to the stomach anyway, as the large intestine is the lower end of
the intestine and is over an order of magnitude shorter than the small
intestine, which is the end connected to the stomach.
