There is a fascinating article in today's Science section of the New
York Times about using microcomputers and desktop publishing to save
endangered languages. The article talks about the efforts of
anthropologists developing techniques for writing down languages that
have no literary tradition. The hope is that it will help preserve
ancient knowledge, traditions and culture. Many cultures are extinct
because their languages are unwritten. The article sites the case of
Jesus Salinas Pedraza who wrote the first book in his native tongue
of Nhu which is a previously unwritten language. He is a rural
school teacher in Mexico. The book talks about folktales, traditional
beliefs, daily life in the village and field, and uses of plants and
minerals. According to the article there are about 6000 languages that
are in danger of extinction.
