897.0. "Analogs to "See you later, alligator"?!" by PENUTS::HNELSON (Hoyt 275-3407 C/RDB/SQL/X/Motif) Tue Jul 02 1991 16:14

    There are the expressions:

        See you later, alligator.
        In a while, crocodile.

    I've invented:

Manyana, iguana. ! How *does* one spell "manyana"?
'Til later on, chameleon. ! Somewhat weak example

    The general form is

        <denote time in the future> <reptile>

It helps if the two components have the same number of syllables. The
two parts have to rhyme, of course.

    Can you think of more?

Actually, on Bobby McFerrin's first album, spontaneous inventions, he
    has a song that has

    see ya later, alligater
    after a while, crocodile
    okey dokey, artichokey
    maana, iguana

I suppose if you listen to Dr. D. on Sunday nights you could do

    "a bientt, demento"...

    .2 maana, iguana

I was speaking to a colleague the other day who hails from Lewis in the
Outer Hebrides. He told me the story of someone once asking what the
Gaelic for maana was, and being told that Gaelic has no word which
conveys such a sense of urgency.

Well. Guess there aren't too many departing reptiles out there.

... I could only think of one of these that involves an ANIMAL, much
less a reptile -- the Hebrew farewell... Pardon the bending of the
rules for the rest... There seem to be many more nouns denoting people
than reptiles, and the cross-language stuff adds to the combinatory
    potential...

I am told that the word "sayo" in some Filipino dialect means "your."
(I don't recall if that is the national dialect or not.)
And that some Filipino didn't know the word that his Japanese friend
spoke when leaving after a visit. However, nara and acacia both being
kinds of trees, the exchange went:

    "Sayonara."

    "Sayo acacia."

    OK, that didn't work.

"You're cruising for a bruising." right?

How about "You're trawling for a mauling"
                      bleeting for a beating
                      asking for a trashing
                                   thrashing

    etc.
