Well, I finally did it; after multiple mentions in this file finally
raised the matter to a "gotta have it" priority, I went into Boston
this afternoon and found a copy of Willard R. Espy's "An Almanac of
Words At Play," published by Clarkson Potter, New York, (c) 1975.
And apropos of Brian Patman's 853.15, I find the following EspyIsm
worthy of posting here, in hopes that others of its ilk might be
created and posted in reply... Over to you, JOYOFLEXers...
An eyeless beggar at my door
Inquired what Realize are for,
And swore he would not let me by
Till I twelve times had answered Why:
Why Summarize are decked with leaf,
While Winterize are bare;
Why Legalize prepare a brief,
While Tranquilize don't care;
Why Malthus feared Fertilize;
Why Sterilize won't sprout;
Why there's no pa for Bastardize,
Why Vocalize sing out;
Why Idolize don't answer prayer;
Why Catalyze are dumb;
Why Fossilize give stony stare,
And Vulgarize chew gum.

Lists of woids
is for de boids.
Do I have permission
for erudition?
Now, Dan/Jodie, am I getting the hang of the vernacular? :-)
I took the beggar by the hand
and led him to a chair.
"My turn," I said, "to question you."
He said, "That's only fair."
"You seek to know in generalize
as symbolize as tools.
My friend, arise so vital
or does vision make us fools?"
"How trivialize may be," he said,
"you know as well as I."
What next the beggar told me I'll
remember 'til I die...
"How simplifies could be switched off
and on, just like a light.
Why then by customize could choose
just sights which give delight.
Acclimatize found trying or
an itemize found plain
could be shut out by switching off
and never tax one's brain.
How sweet and pleasant justifies
could pick out good from ill!
We'd all become so purifies
could function at our will.
But you and I know that is not
how wise have been designed.
And "neutralize" and "standardize"
are difficult to find.
Instead God gave us randomize,
to see things as they are.
The terrorize can see outweighs
the pleasant things by far.
The workings of a vandalize
can see and deprecate.
The deadly canonize can see
in Baghdad and Kuwait.
Good sir, to end my sermonize
can see great heights we scale.
But I've known the lobotomize
can see before they fail."
So smug beneath those sterilize
a smile the beggar wore.
My wife was there. I cauterize.
We threw him out the door!

When I was young I dreamed of love
and of a lover's charms.
Of how I'd feel when he took me
and held me in his arms.
Sensation was elusive but
then, much to my surprise,
I found that I could catch it
when I saw conceptualize.
My lover first had tenderize
to chase my childish fears.
From him I learned that love is kind.
I've treasured him for years.
My lover then had socialize
which saw the need for friends.
From them I learned that love can be
so strong it never ends.
My lover next had moralize
to teach me right from wrong.
From him I learned fidelity
means working to belong.
My lover then had crystallize
which sparkled in the light.
Through him I saw the colours in
the silver moonlit night.
My lover next had idealize
which showed me "life" meant "quest".
From him I learned that chasing dreams
is better than to rest.
My lover then had vulgarize
which saw the coarse and rude.
From him I learned that men can be
abusive, loud and crude.
My lover next had brutalize
which hurt me with their lies.
From him I learned that love can be
just hatred in disguise.
My lover then had equalize
which showed me due respect.
From him I learned that sometimes love's
a cover for neglect.
My lover has immortalize.
His love will never die.
So, now I'm older, I have learned
I don't need men. Do I?
Polly.
