863.0. "Pre-posterous!" by DOOZER::VTX (Polly Glott) Fri Jan 18 1991 17:45

    I have come across "pre-sliced bread rolls", "pre-rolled finger
    bandage" and "pre-owned cars" to describe, respectively:
    sliced bread rolls, rolled finger bandage and cars previously owned
    by other people.

    In striving to describe that something has been done to a product,
    for your convenience, before you buy it, manufacturers and suppliers
    have taken to using the prefix "pre-".

    Surely, if something is in a "pre-sliced" state, it is not yet sliced!
    And so on...

    Any other (or similar) examples? I have pre-prepared this basenote
    for your reply...

    Polly

    Today I bought a few pre-read books. They looked like new, although
    others on the shelf looked obviously used.
