I believe the following is correct but am not sure of one word.

If the grate be empty put coal on
If the grate be full, stop putting coal on
Don't put coal on over a high fender (not sure but imagine this could

A feeble effort:

If the upper case be empty put coal on
If the upper case be full stop putting coal on
Don't put coal on over a hyphen der (high fender)
You'd be an asterisk it (ass to risk it)

    .1 has it.

When this was explained to me, I was told that, quite some time ago,
"they" used to say "great" instead of "upper-case" or "capital". So,
the capital B in the puzzle comes out as "great B" which is homonymed
    to be "grate be"; i.e.
If the B mt == If the grate be empty

The colon (:) comes out as "coal on".

The period (.) is also known as a full stop.

A fender ("a hyphen der") is defined as "a low metal guard before an
open fireplace [or in a coal stove, I guess] to keep back falling
    coals."
