815.0. "Me Tarzan, you five letters" by MARVIN::KNOWLES (intentionally Rive Gauche) Mon Jul 30 1990 10:55

What did Edgar Rice Burroughs call Tarzan's chimp? I know all the
film scripts spelt it `Cheetah', but I've got a crossword clue that's
convinced that it's only five letters long, with an H second and a T
    fourth. CHITA? CHETA?

    Thanks

Edgar Rice Burroughs never called Tarzan's chimp anything because
he didn't have a chimp in the books.

Tarzan had a small monkey as a pet. I don't remember its name but
I believe it was simply the ape word for monkey, much as the elephant's
name was Tantor which simply means elephant.

In the revamped Saturday Morning Cartoon version of Tarzan the monkey was called
Nakima or something like that. Does that ring any bells?

815.6How about 4 letters?KYOA::DUNAIEFThey call me Madame PersonalityWed Sep 12 1990 20:4811
The ape word for Monkey in the Tarzan books was Manu, ofcourse that's
    only four letters...

I don't know, in the books atleast up to book 12 (that's how far I've
gotten) he has no pet monkey.

Are you still doing the same crossword puzzle? Have you gotten the
answers to this puzzle? What was it??

Entertainment Tonight just did a piece on the chimp who appeared
in the Tarzan movies (and many others). They spelled his name

    			CHETA

I thought that was "A Current Affair" in a piece that thought it was
unfair that Lassie and Mickey Mouse had a star on the Hollywood Walk
of Fame but Cheta did not.

Re .2 - not cheating, just admitting defeat. The rules I play by
don't allow any sort of reference to anyone or anything (inc. works
of reference, except a dictionary when I know what the answer must
be and just need to confirm that the word exists). I have to make an
exception when I'm working on a crossword puzzle with my wife, whose
rules are less fastidious. But, as someone else has said somewhere,
    everyone has their own rules.

Re .6 - no, I'm not doing the same one any more

    Re .7 - thanks, now I know
