784.0. "endorse vs. indorse" by MELEE::BIELSKI (special(?) agent @MKO) Fri Mar 09 1990 17:41
I'm having some legal documents drawn up (will, etc.) and in one of
them was the phrase "...to make, receive, sign, indorse,....".
"indorse" in my Random House says "v.t., endorse"
"endorse" is defined fully, i.e., "v.t., 1. to support actively 2. ..."
This seems to back up "endorse" as the prerred spelling, and is the only
one I knew existed until reviewing the draft document. (A pretty
expensive lesson....) I intend to have the final document say
"endorse".
Are there any indorsers out there? Attorneys, please identify
yourselves as such....

784.1 | US Army used 'indorse' | PROXY::CANTOR | Eat any good books lately? | Sat Mar 10 1990 00:13 | 6 |
| When I was in the Army, lo these many years ago, 'indorse' was the
*only* allowable spelling. I wrote about it somewhere in some other
notes file much, much earlier. I'll see if I can find it and put a
pointer here.

| I'm not a lawyer, but I wouldn't be surprised if there were separate
meanings here. When you indorse a cheque, you sign it on (in) the
back (dorse). If there's a document involved, I shouldn't be
surprised if - to a lawyer - this was the only acceptable spelling.
You pay them royally for their advice; I'd be on the safe side
and live with their spelling too.

784.3 | legally endorsed | NYSSA::BIELSKI | Do we need a bigger Texas? | Fri Mar 23 1990 05:54 | 5 |
| My attorney assures me there is no legal difference, so "endorse" it
will be in my document. Felt good to be able to contribute even such a
minor move toward plain English among all the surrounding legalese.
