714.0. "and and and and and " by CHEFS::BUXTON () Fri Aug 25 1989 18:29
Many, many years ago in the days of Dick Barton and Journey Into
Space I used to be encouraged to drink my Ovaltine and shuffle off
to bed.
Here I would hide beneath the blankets and, holding my hand firmly
around it, I would direct my torch at the Beano annual or some such
picture book.
One of the books, the name I don't recall, was somewhat more up-market
than the Beano and had more words than pictures. In this book was
an interesting piece that showed the use of the same word, in a
meaningful sentence, used five times consecutively.
A picture showed a sign-writer painting the sign for the Coach and
Horses Pub. An onlooker was criticizing his work saying, "The spaces
between coach and and and and and horses are too small."
Why I have remembered this, I just don't know.
Are there other examples of people remembering useless things?
