707.0. "Words + numbers = puzzle" by WELMTS::HILL (Technology is my Vorpal sword) Fri Aug 11 1989 12:05
I know it's not really word play, or is it? Anyway I thought some
of you may like to try solving the arithmetic of this...
It is in pre-1971 English currency, i.e. Pounds, Shillings and Pence.
For youngsters and foreigners there were 12 pennies in a shilling,
and 20 shillings in a pound, with the following coinage:
Pence 1/4 1/2 1 3 6
Shillings 1 2 5
Other 2 shillings and 6 pence
Now the problem is to fill in the values to reach the total given:
Pounds Shillings Pence
A boy's name
A girl's name
A craftsman
Saturn, Pluto and Neptune
Two wheeled transport
Headgear
A singing voice
An ailing sea creature
---------------------------
16 6 9
If needed, which I doubt, I'll post the answer in a couple of days.
