625.0. "what to call the 1980s?" by COOKIE::DEVINE (Bob Devine, CXN) Fri Feb 17 1989 18:21

    We've all heard and accepted the name for the 1970's -- "The
    Me Decade". But we are living in an unnamed decade! *Gasp!*

    So, does anyone have a good name for it?  We have to hurry;
    the '80s are just about over.

625.2The Non DecadeCOOKIE::DEVINEBob Devine, CXNFri Feb 17 1989 18:2711
    I tending to the name of the "Non Decade". You probably have
    heard and said the non-word "non". For example at a restaurant
    when the maitre d'/seater asks if you want "smoking or non-smoking
    section", the answer many times is "non". Same thing with
    air travel -- "cancer-seeking or non-cancer-seeking"...

    In addition, the decade is rather faceless. What great music was
    created? Punk?! Rap?!? More heavy-metal?!?! What great politicians
    were elected to move the USA?

    Therefore, it all seems sort of like a non-decade...

    It's the "I want it, and I want it NOW!" decade ...

    How about "the Thirtysomething" decade. Because the baby-boomers
    are coming into power and coming of age. They're becoming the
    new establishment, which is ironic considering the anti-establishment
    movement they were a part of in the sixties.

    Hence:
            90's --> fortysomething : Realize viscious cycle decade
                                         ( by watching next babyboom )
            00's --> fiftysomething    : Mid-life crisis decade.
            10's --> sixtysomething    : Retirement decade
            20's --> seventysomething  : Dying decade.

Ahhhhh... you might have heard and accepted that, I haven't. Decades
don't seem to be characterized from the 0th year to the 9th year, but
the end of the previous decade seems to sneak a couple of years into the
new one. So when I think of the 60's, I really consider 1973 to be a
part of it, where 1962 was the end of the 50s' for me.

For names, I've heard and accepted "The Me generation (or decade)" as
being the 80's. The 70's were "The wasteland." It was a period of
walking around dazed from the 60's trying to re-find ourselves. In the
80's people started the "greed is a virtue" crap.

    Or the Tragic decade. Or the Rootless decade...

    How about the Enterprising Eighties, what with everyone out to make
    a buck and our national heroes, or at least those who seem to be
    getting the most attention, men like Iacocca and Trump, et al. Or
    if Ravi and Galbraith and others are right, historians will call
    this the Opulent Eighties. But I think this decade can best be
    characterized as the Echoing Eighties, a time of repeats from the
    mindless reruns of old sitcoms to the nostalgia of the 50s and the
    desire to turn back the clock to everything from legal executions,
    once nearly obsolete, to abortions and school prayer.

    I feel this decade has already been named. The answer to everthing
    in this period seems to be......

    "Come on...This is the Eighties!"

    So my nomination naming this period is..."This is the Eighties!"

    Just a thought.

    ....as in the Last Chance Decade, when we moved beyond not facing our
    national problems and weaknesses, but actually *decided* not to face
    them. And the band struck up "Nearer my God to thee".
