469.0. "for all porpoises in tents" by VIDEO::OSMAN (type video::user$7:[osman]eric.vt240) Mon Jan 18 1988 20:56

I can't remember if this was already mentioned:

Do others of you get confused as to whether the correct expression is

	For all intents and purposes

or

	For all intensive purposes

or

	For all intents of purposes

or

	For all intense of purposes

(probably people that read alot know that answer better than those
of us that just listen alot)

no. it's "for all intents and purposes."

although I've heard an awful joke about a boy scout troop that's
having a campout on an air craft carrier and they'll be serving hot
dogs for all in tents and porpoises.

    blech.

I've seen this used a lot in other conferences, but I wouldn't
have expected it in this one!! Or has it somehow slipped into
    acceptability when I wasn't looking?

I'll have to conceded that _alright_ appears in my dictionaries
as a *Nonstandard* variation for _all right_. However, I still
think that its just plain lazy (or sloppy) to leave the space out
    of _a lot_.

Since "alot is alright" in your book, if you give me the title,
would you think it alright if I bought alot of copies? {:^P

The following is not intended to make fun of anyone but to show how easy it is
for this to happen. And it happens to just about everyone. (Exceptions need
not respond. :-)

In a conference I found the following. After extolling the features of a car
being sold, the person concluded with:

    ....another-words: Show-room condition !!!!

I always thought it was " in other words".
